Opera Traditionalists Will Adore the Met’s Opulent 1980s ‘Arabella’

The Metropolitan Opera's production of Richard Strauss's Arabella, revived after an eleven-year absence, is a masterclass in lavishness and spectacle. This season's revival has restored the Met to its former glory, reminding audiences of the company's rich tradition of presenting operas that cater to conservative tastes.

Directed by Otto Schenk, who passed away earlier this year at 94, the production is an homage to the golden age of opera, with stunning sets and costumes designed by Milena Canonero. Günther Schneider-Siemssen's Cinemascope settings transport the audience to the opulent world of early 20th-century Vienna, while Canonero's costumes are nothing short of breathtaking.

At the center of this lavish production is American soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella, delivering a performance that will surely be remembered for years to come. Her portrayal of the titular character is both nuanced and charismatic, effortlessly conveying Arabella's wit, intelligence, and vulnerability. The chemistry between her and Tomasz Konieczny, who plays Mandryka, is undeniable, making their romance one of the most compelling aspects of the opera.

The supporting cast, including Evan LeRoy Johnson as Elemer, Louise Alder as Zdenka, Ben Brady as Lamoral, Ricardo José Rivera as Dominik, Karen Cargill as Adelaide, and Brindley Sherratt as Waldner, deliver performances that are equally impressive. Dylan Evans's revival of Schenk's staging is a masterclass in naturalism, bringing the opera to life with clever set changes and precise pacing.

Conductor Nicholas Carter brings his usual assurance to the podium, drawing outstanding playing from the orchestra. However, some critics may find that Carter's brisk tempi occasionally rush the singers, particularly Willis-Sørensen, who deserves more time to savor the opera's beautiful music.

Despite a nearly four-hour runtime without an intermission, this production of Arabella is an entertaining and engaging enterprise that will delight fans of Strauss and Schenk. The Met's decision to eschew an edition sanctioned by Strauss that eliminates one intermission may be seen as a concession to modern sensibilities, but the end result is a fresh and vivid cast that makes Arabella an especially enjoyable experience.

As the opera concludes with Arabella exclaiming "I cannot help it. Take me as I am!" the audience is left in awe of Willis-Sørensen's performance, which is nothing short of breathtaking. This production of Arabella is a testament to the Met's commitment to preserving the world of classical music for future generations and a must-see event for opera enthusiasts.

omg 😍 rachel willis-soersen as arabella is literally perfection 🤩 her chemistry with tomasz konieczny is so on point 💕 i love how the sets and costumes are straight out of a fairy tale 🏰💃 the conductor nicholas carter did an amazing job too 🎵 his only misstep was rushing some parts but overall it's just soooo good 😍

I mean, I'm not saying it's all bad, but 4 hours without a break? That's just crazy talk! Opera's supposed to be an experience, not a marathon. And don't even get me started on these new-fangled set changes - in my day, we just used a good old-fashioned curtain call 😂. The singers are talented and all, but I think they're getting lost in the noise of this overly elaborate production. All that money and effort could've gone into making the opera itself better, not just the stage design 🤑. And what's with the Met trying to make it more "accessible" for modern sensibilities? Some things are timeless, folks, don't try to fix what ain't broke 💁‍♀️.

I just got back from watching this new opera at the Met 🎭👏 and I gotta say, it was absolute perfection! The sets were insane, like stepping into a different era, and the costumes? Mind-blowing 💥. But what really stood out for me was the lead singer, Rachel Willis-Sørensen - she's got this incredible presence on stage that just draws you in 🤩. I mean, who doesn't love a good underdog story like Arabella, right? It's all about being true to yourself, even when everyone else wants something different 💖.

And what really impressed me was how they balanced the lavishness with the actual storytelling - it wasn't too over-the-top or boring 🙏. Plus, the whole cast delivered solid performances that had me on the edge of my seat 😲. The conductor, Nicholas Carter, did a great job bringing everything together without overwhelming the singers.

I have to admit, I'm not always sure what's going on in an opera (it's like trying to follow a plot twist while eating spaghetti 🍝🤯), but this one was actually pretty accessible! Maybe it's just because the Met is reviving some old classics, but I felt like they'd done a great job making it feel fresh and new for modern audiences.

Overall, if you're an opera fan or just looking for something to do that's a little bit different 🤔, this production of Arabella is definitely worth checking out. It's got everything: drama, romance, music... what more could you ask for? 🎵👏

"Variety is the spice of life." 💫🎭 The Metropolitan Opera's revival of Richard Strauss's Arabella is serving up a piping hot plate of opulence, with lavish sets, stunning costumes, and performances that are nothing short of spectacular! From American soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen's charismatic portrayal of Arabella to the supporting cast delivering impressive performances, this production is a true treat for opera enthusiasts. Whether you're a fan of classical music or just looking for something new to get excited about, Arabella is an event not to be missed! 🎵

💥 just saw this arabella at met 🗽️ and i'm still reeling from rachel willis-soerensen's performance 💫 she brings so much depth to arabella's character, it's like you can feel her vulnerability 💔 and charisma at the same time 😍 the sets and costumes are insane, milena canonero outdid herself 🤩 and nicholas carter's conducting is always top notch 🎵 gotta say, though, 4 hours with no intermission might be a bit too long for some folks 😴

I'm thinking, you know how some operas are just super fancy and over-the-top 🤯, but this one is on another level! The sets, costumes, everything is so opulent and stunning it's like stepping into a fairytale. And the singing? 💥 Rachel Willis-Sørensen is absolutely phenomenal as Arabella - she brings such depth and emotion to the role it's impossible not to be drawn in.

I'm also loving how the production stays true to the original, but still feels fresh and modern. The chemistry between Willis-Sørensen and Tomasz Konieczny is undeniable, and the supporting cast is equally impressive. The conductor, Nicholas Carter, does an amazing job of bringing it all together, even if some critics might say he rushes the singers a bit.

I think what I love most about this production is how it showcases the beauty and elegance of classical music in a way that's still accessible to modern audiences 🎵. It's not just for opera aficionados or stuffy oldies - it's an experience that anyone can enjoy!

Wow 😍 The way they recreated the sets and costumes for this 11-year-old revival is insane! I mean, those Cinemascope settings are straight outta old-school Hollywood 🎥👀. And Rachel Willis-Sørensen's performance as Arabella? Mind-blowing 💥 She totally owns that role with her nuance and charisma 😎. The chemistry between her and Tomasz Konieczny is undeniable, it's like they were meant to be together in this opera ❤️. Interesting how the conductor tries to balance the tempo with the singers' needs, hope he gets more feedback next time 🤔

OMG 🤩 I'm still reeling from this revival of Arabella at the Met! The sets, costumes, and performances are ALL GOALS 💥👗 Rachel Willis-Sørensen is absolutely killing it as Arabella - her chemistry with Tomasz Konieczny is so palpable I ship them hard 💕 And can we talk about the supporting cast? Evan LeRoy Johnson's Elemer is everything and more 😍 I love how Dylan Evans brought Schenk's staging to life with those clever set changes 🎬 The only thing that would've made it perfect is a slightly slower tempi, but Nicholas Carter still brought the house down 🏠🔥

OMG, I'm totally obsessed with this new revival of Richard Strauss's Arabella at the Met!!! 🤩 It's like stepping into a luxurious time capsule, all opulent sets and costumes that'll transport you to Vienna in the early 20th century 🕰️. The production is so lavish and over-the-top, it's like a Masterclass on how to do luxury opera 😍.

Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella is pure perfection - her performance is nuanced, charismatic, and gives me ALL the feels 💖. And that chemistry with Tomasz Konieczny? Swoon! Their romance is one of the most compelling parts of the opera. The supporting cast is amazing too, they all bring their A-game 🤩.

The conductor, Nicholas Carter, does his thing as always, but I think some critics might feel like they're rushing through the singers at times 🕰️. That being said, it's a minor quibble in an otherwise masterpiece of an opera.

Three hours and 45 minutes without an intermission? Bring on the drama 💁‍♀️! The Met's decision to skip one intermission is definitely a concession to modern sensibilities, but it makes for a fresh and engaging experience. Can't wait to see more productions like this! 💖

OMG, I'm still reeling from that amazing review of the Metropolitan Opera's revival of Richard Strauss's Arabella 🤩! The sets, costumes, and performances all came together to create this incredible spectacle - it really does feel like a masterclass in lavishness! Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella stole the show, her nuanced and charismatic portrayal was truly unforgettable 💥. I'm not sure what the conductor Nicholas Carter's tempi issue was, but it felt like the singers were so well-prepared to shine despite that. Overall, I think the Met did an incredible job preserving this opera for future generations - can't wait to see more productions like this in the future 😍

OMG 🤩 just watched the most epic revival of Arabella at the Met 📍! I'm totally speechless, tbh 😍 Rachel Willis-Sørensen is literally flawless as Arabella 💁‍♀️ her vocals are insane and her acting chops? 🤯 she brings so much depth to the character. The sets, costumes, and choreo are all on point too 🎨💃 Otto Schenk's direction is still magic even after his passing 🕊️ and Nicholas Carter's conducting skills are always on point 🎵 only minor quibble that Carter rushes some of the arias 👂 but honestly, it's a small price to pay for this level of artistry 🤯

I think what really stood out to me about this production of Arabella was how it perfectly captured the essence of Strauss's original intent while still feeling fresh and exciting in its own right 🤔. It's a reminder that sometimes, taking risks and trying new things can lead to something truly amazing... I mean, who would have thought that abandoning an intermission would make the experience even more enjoyable? 😊 But seriously, it just goes to show that sometimes you gotta shake things up a bit in order to breathe new life into something that's already beautiful.

🌟 I'm totally stoked about this revival of The Metropolitan Opera's Arabella! Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Arabella is seriously giving me life - her voice is like butter for my ears 🤩. And I'm all about that chemistry between her and Tomasz Konieczny - their romance scenes had me swooning 💘. The Met really knows how to bring out the best in its performers, and this production is a masterclass in naturalism. The conductor Nicholas Carter just gets it right, you know? Some critics might say the tempi are a bit brisk, but I think that's just part of the opera's charm 🎵. And hey, who needs intermissions when you've got an epic 4-hour runtime? 😂 It's like a luxurious holiday from reality! Overall, this production is a must-see for anyone who loves classical music - and let's be real, who doesn't love opera? 💖

🎭 I mean, come on, $1.5 million sets? That's just insane. Don't get me wrong, it looks stunning, but like, who needs that much cash on a production? 😂 I'm not hating on the artistry or anything, Rachel Willis-Sørensen is giving us life as Arabella, but let's keep some perspective here. The Met should be preserving the classics, not breaking the bank. 💸
