Our beautiful multiplex: Milton Keynes council fights to save landmark cinema The Point

Milton Keynes' Cultural Icon Hangs in the Balance as Council Battles Developers Over Demolition of Beloved Cinema

In a battle that has left the city reeling, plans to demolish The Point, the 1980s multiplex that once revolutionized British cinema-going, have sparked fierce resistance from local campaigners and heritage groups. This iconic landmark, which was hailed as "a temple of pleasure" upon its opening in 1983, is now under threat due to a proposed new housing development.

Critics argue that The Point's demise would be a catastrophic loss for the city's cultural heritage, while supporters point out that it has long been a commercial failure. Built by US-based cinema chain AMC as part of a bold experiment to revitalize British cinema-going, The Point opened its doors at a time when attendance was dwindling. However, its extravagant design and 10 screens soon made it a sensation, welcoming over a million visitors in its first year.

Despite its initial success, The Point's fortunes began to decline with the arrival of rival entertainment complexes like Xscape in Milton Keynes. Changes in consumer expectations and the rise of digital streaming further took its toll on the venue. Its cinemas closed for the last time in 2015, but grassroots campaigners have since launched a series of efforts to save it.

The latest development came when Galliard Homes won permission to demolish The Point and build a new 21-storey apartment block containing 487 flats. Local Labour leader Peter Marland has described the plan as "terrible in almost every single way," citing concerns over lack of affordable housing, poor design, and "identikit flats."

As the council seeks legal advice on challenging the planning appeal, Historic England is currently assessing whether The Point should be listed, which would provide it with a measure of protection. If successful, its listing status could prevent its destruction.

The Point holds a special place in Milton Keynes' history, serving as a symbol of the city's ambitions and creativity. Its preservation has become an increasingly important issue, with local politicians and heritage groups urging caution over the proposed demolition. As one Labour MP for Milton Keynes Central recently said, "Though the site has fallen derelict in recent years, the complete demolition of The Point would be a considerable loss to our local heritage assets."

OMG u guys this is soooo sad ๐Ÿค• the point is literally a piece of history & ppl r going crazy 2 try & save it lol i mean its not like its some perfect preserved building from old times its got its flaws but c'mon its still iconic ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ‘

i get wut the devs are saying bout the new housing but u can't deny its heritage value ๐Ÿ›๏ธ like why cant we just have both? preserve the cinema & make it into some kinda museum or community space? that way ppl can still enjoy the nostalgia but also have a place 2 call home ๐Ÿค

Historic England gettin involved is a big deal tho ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ maybe they can give The Point the listing status & save it from the wrecking ball ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Ugh, can't believe what's going down with The Point in MK ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, it's already a shell of its former self, but demolishing it? No way, that's just wrong. It was a cultural icon and part of the city's history, for sure. And now they wanna turn it into some generic apartment block with 487 flats? Not cool at all ๐Ÿšซ. I get that it hasn't been doing well financially, but you can't just erase history like that. Historic England needs to step in and do something about this, maybe list it as a heritage site or something. The council's all over the place on this one, though... ๐Ÿ˜‚

omg i feel so bad for that cinema ๐Ÿค• it's like a piece of history just waiting to get knocked down ๐Ÿ˜” i remember watching movies there as a kid and it was always such a special treat to go to the multiplex. now it's being torn down to make way for apartments?๐Ÿ˜ก that's just cruel. i think it's so great that grassroots campaigners are fighting to save it - every little bit counts, right? ๐Ÿ™ let's hope historic england can get it listed and protect it from destruction ๐Ÿšง๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ OMG, can you believe this?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ They wanna knock down The Point, a cinema legend that's been around since 1983 ๐ŸŽฅ! It's not just about the movies, it's about preserving history and culture for future generations. I mean, what's next? Demolishing old libraries or museums? ๐Ÿ˜ณ It's like they're erasing a part of our past. And to think they're replacing it with "identikit flats" ๐ŸŒ†... no thanks! The council needs to think twice before making this decision. Can we get Historic England on board and save this beauty? ๐Ÿ™ Let's make some noise and keep The Point safe! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค• this is so upsetting, i mean what's gonna happen to all those memories that people have made there? it's not just some old cinema building, it's a part of the city's history ๐Ÿ™๏ธ. i can imagine how sad it'll be for the community if it gets demolished. ppl say its commercial failure but thats not the point, its cultural significance is still worth preserving ๐Ÿ’”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation ๐Ÿคฏ... I mean, The Point is like a piece of history right here in Milton Keynes. It's crazy that it could just get torn down like that ๐Ÿšง. I've heard the cinema was once super popular back in the day, and now it's all just been left to decay? What's wrong with saving it for nostalgic value alone? ๐ŸŽฅ It's not like they're gonna build a better movie palace or anything. The thought of those "identikit flats" being built on its site is just depressing ๐Ÿ˜”... let's preserve the past, you know?

๐Ÿ˜” my heart is breaking thinking about this beautiful cinema being demolished... it's like losing a part of our city's soul. I get that it wasn't commercial successful anymore, but that doesn't mean we should erase its history and significance. It was a game changer for British cinema-going back in the day! ๐ŸŽฅ The memories it must hold for so many people are priceless. Can't we find another way to redevelop the site that preserves its character? ๐Ÿ’•

I gotta say, demolishing The Point just 'cause it's been commercial failure sounds like a big mistake ๐Ÿค”. I mean, it's an iconic landmark that's still got a special place in people's hearts. All these arguments about it being a symbol of the city's creativity and ambitions are kinda valid, you know? It's not just some old cinema, it's a piece of history that could be lost forever if we let them knock it down ๐Ÿ˜”.

And yeah, affordable housing and design concerns might seem like valid reasons for not building on the site, but what about preserving something that could bring in tourists and inject life into the city? It's not all doom and gloom just 'cause The Point wasn't making a profit anymore ๐Ÿค‘. Plus, Historic England is looking at listing it, which would be huge for preserving our cultural heritage ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's a tough call, but I reckon we should try to find a way to save The Point rather than just knocking it down and building something new on the site ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm not sure I buy that this cinema's fate is already sealed ๐Ÿค”. I mean, we've seen cities like Manchester and Birmingham reclaim old abandoned buildings and turn them into thriving hubs for culture and entertainment. Why can't Milton Keynes do the same with The Point? Galliard Homes are trying to justify their plan by saying it'll bring in new housing, but where's the proof that the flats will be affordable for actual locals rather than just rich city-dwellers? ๐Ÿค‘ And what about the history and character of the building itself? It's not like they're talking about some faceless cookie-cutter development. Historic England is assessing a listing, which could be a game-changer - but it's still uncertain whether that'll actually happen. Can we get a clearer picture on what's going to happen next? ๐Ÿ“

I'm so down w/ these people who wanna save The Point ๐Ÿ™Œ! Like, it's not just a cinema anymore, it's part of Milton Keynes' history and vibes ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Can't we find a way 2 preserve the old place instead of tearing it down? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ Galliard Homes sounds like they're just in it 4 da cash ๐Ÿ’ธ, no consideration 4 what it means 2 the community ๐ŸŒŸ

And I'm all 4 Historic England listing The Point ๐Ÿ‘! It's not just bout preserving a building, it's bout keeping our cultural heritage alive ๐ŸŽฌ. If we let this happen, wut's next? Demolishin' other iconic landmarks 2 make way 4 more apartments? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ No way, Josรฉ!

๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ’”๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Oh my gosh, this is like ๐Ÿ˜ญ totally heartbreaking! ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ I mean, can you even imagine ๐Ÿคฏ losing this iconic piece of history? ๐Ÿ“š The Point has been a part of Milton Keynes' identity for so long, and it's just... ๐Ÿ’” it's just not right. ๐Ÿ’”

I get that it's no longer the cinema giant it once was, but come on! ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's still got so much character and charm! โค๏ธ And those flats ๐Ÿ  are just, like, ๐Ÿ˜’ so boring. Where's the creativity? The flair? ๐Ÿ˜Ž

And what about all the memories? ๐Ÿ˜† All the families who've had movie nights there, the couples who've gone on dates under the stars... ๐ŸŒƒ It's not just a building; it's a piece of our collective history! ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ

I'm so glad ๐Ÿ’– that Historic England is looking into listing it, because if anyone can save The Point, it's them. ๐Ÿ™ And I hope the council ๐Ÿค does its due diligence on this one. We can't just let something as amazing as this get torn down! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I'm loving this drama ๐Ÿ˜‚, like who gets to decide what's cool and what's not? The city wants to keep it old school, but the devs are all about that new skool ๐Ÿ’ธ. I mean, can you imagine if they just left it as is? It'd be like a time capsule for cinema nerds ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. But on a more serious note, if it gets listed, it's gonna be a major win for heritage preservation ๐Ÿ˜Š. Galliard Homes could learn from the 80s โ€“ you know, when neon was cool and mullets were a thing ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ”ด. Seriously though, it'd be a shame to lose that piece of history. Maybe they can just convert it into an Airbnb for film buffs or something? ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŽฌ

omg i just got back from like the most amazing theme park and i saw this old movie theater that was like super retro ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ‘€ it reminded me of when my grandparents used to take me to see movies when i was little. anyway, i dont really get why they wanna knock down this one place in milton keynes... isnt it like a landmark or something? ๐Ÿค” what if they just restore it instead? ๐Ÿ—๏ธ i mean, historic england is supposed to be helping out and all that jazz... ๐Ÿ™ shouldnt they just leave it alone?

I THINK IT'S SO SAD THAT THIS ICONIC MOVIE THEATER IS AT RISK OF BEING DEMOLISHED!!! IT WAS LIKE A PART OF MILTON KEYNES' HISTORY AND CULTURE, YOU KNOW? IT WASN'T JUST SOME OLD BUILDING, IT WAS A SIGNIFICANT LANDMARK THAT BROUGHT PEOPLE TOGETHER. I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T LOVE GOING TO THE MOVIES WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY?! ๐Ÿ˜Š IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE THEATER ITSELF, IT'S ABOUT THE MEMORIES AND EXPERIENCES THAT PEOPLE MADE THERE.

AND I GUESS IT'S GOOD THAT HISTORIC ENGLAND IS LOOKING AT LISTING IT, BECAUSE IF IT GETS LISTED, IT WOULD PROBABLY SAVE IT FROM BEING DESTROYED. BUT COME ON, COUNCILORS! CAN'T YOU SEE HOW MUCH THIS MEANS TO THE PEOPLE OF MILTON KEYNES?! LET'S TRY TO FIND A WAY TO SAVING THIS PLACE, INSTEAD OF JUST BUILDING SOME FLATS ON TOP OF IT ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜” this is such a shame, I mean The Point is already kinda old & neglected but still it's got so much history ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ’ญ it's not just about some big multiplex but also about the memories ppl made there ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘ซ like anyone gonna remember all those movies they watched on 10 screens back in the day? ๐Ÿค”

I feel so bad for Galliard Homes ๐Ÿค” they're getting such hate from locals. I mean, it's just a building, right? It's not like they're trying to destroy some historical artifact... although, I guess The Point is kinda iconic ๐Ÿ˜Š But seriously, can't we just have progress and new developments around here? I don't get why the council has to get involved in this ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. And what's with all the drama about affordable housing? It's not like Galliard Homes are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts ๐Ÿ’ธ. Historic England should definitely give The Point some protection, though - it is a piece of history after all ๐Ÿ“š. Maybe we can find a way to preserve it while still allowing for new development... I don't know, maybe they could just move The Point to a different location or something? ๐Ÿคฏ
