Pa. crash deaths were near record lows in 2024, but speeding and drunk driving still account for most of them

Pennsylvania Sees Record-Low Fatalities on Roads, but Speeding and Drunk Driving Remain Top Killers

In a welcome trend, Pennsylvania reported a near-record low in fatalities last year, with only 1,127 deaths in over 110,000 reported crashes. While this represents a decline of 82 fatalities compared to the previous year, speed and alcohol remain the most lethal culprits behind the wheel.

Speeding was responsible for 32% of all fatalities, claiming the lives of nearly 360 drivers, while impaired driving accounted for 22%. In fact, alcohol-related crashes were nearly three-and-a-half times more likely to result in fatal injuries than those that weren't related to drinking.

The majority of these crashes involved men behind the wheel, with 72% attributed to drunk driving. Meanwhile, a staggering 90% of fatalities involving alcohol occurred in vehicles driven by someone who had consumed too much booze.

However, there is some positive news – underage drinking-related crashes are showing signs of improvement, with a decline from 10% to 8% among drivers aged 16-20 last year.

Another alarming trend emerged during the days surrounding major federal holidays. With over 13,000 crashes and 152 fatalities, the period between Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Day proved particularly deadly. Labor Day travel was also marred by a high number of deaths.

Beyond speed and impaired driving, improper turns, distracted driving, and traffic law violations were responsible for nearly all other fatal crashes in Pennsylvania last year.

A sobering reminder of the importance of road safety came from the report itself – a staggering 46% of people killed in fatalities weren't even wearing their seatbelts.

And while PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll called the decline in traffic fatalities "good news," he stressed that there's still much work to be done. With two years of increasing crashes between cars and bicycles, and over 1,100 cyclist fatalities since 2020 – it's clear that this issue won't be resolved overnight.

Only through sustained education and outreach efforts will Pennsylvania make real progress toward zero traffic fatalities. As Carroll aptly put it: "Please pay attention when you are driving, always follow the speed limit, and never drive impaired."

OMG, have you ever noticed how pizza delivery guys always seem to know exactly when you're about to leave for a trip? Like, they can just sense it! 🍕 I was at this one place yesterday and I ordered a slice (because priorities) and the guy shows up right as I'm grabbing my keys. It's like he had a sixth sense or something 😂. Anyway, back to road safety... yeah, speeding is still super bad news 💔.

omg 46% of ppl killed weren't wearin seatbelts 🤯 that's crazy! think we need more emphasis on road safety ed & enforcement 🚨👮‍♂️ gotta start with these basic habits, ppl 💡 & btw what about cars & cyclists? like, why is there still a huge gap between them? 🚗🚴‍♀️ some stats say 2 yrs of increasing crashes... that's not good at all 😬 think we need more funding for bike lanes & safety measures 🤑

I'm so glad to see PA's road fatalities going down, but can we go back to the good ol' days when people actually used their brains while driving? Remember those old-school dash cams that caught all the reckless drivers? Nowadays it feels like everyone's too busy staring at their phones to even notice they're on the road 📱🚗. And don't even get me started on these new "lane departure warnings" - what happened to just using your common sense? I swear, back in my day, if you couldn't keep up with traffic, you'd have to pull over and wait it out... or better yet, take a bus 🚌. Anyway, yeah, it's great that speed and drunk driving are being targeted, but we gotta make sure everyone's on the same page here - road safety is key! 💡

I'm kinda glad to see Pennsylvnia's road fatalities going down, but at the same time it's still super concerning that speeding & drunk driving are such big problems 🚗😬. I mean, 46% of people weren't even wearing their seatbelts? That's just crazy! We need to do way more education and outreach efforts to make sure everyone knows how important road safety is. And let's be real, these numbers aren't going to change overnight, so we gotta keep pushing for zero traffic fatalities. The fact that most of the drunk driving crashes involved men is also pretty sobering 😕

man thats crazy how many people died from speeding & drink driving 🚗😱 its like we still gotta stress the importance of road safety lol 46% not wearing seatbelt is wild too i mean cant believe they need to say it out loud but idk maybe its true tho anyway its good to see theres a decline in fatalities but 1,100 cyclist fatalities since 2020 is straight up terrifying 🚴‍♂️ lets hope the efforts pay off & we get zero traffic fatalities soon 💯

🚗💡 I'm glad to see PA is seeing a record-low number of road fatalities, but it's still super concerning that speeding and drunk driving are the biggest culprits 🤯. I mean, come on people! 46% not wearing seatbelts? That's just crazy 😱. It's awesome that underage drinking-related crashes are improving tho 🎉. But we need to keep pushing for more education & outreach efforts to make real progress towards zero traffic fatalities 💪. I know PA Sec Mike Carroll is right, it's all about being careful & responsible behind the wheel 🚗💕

I think its pretty wild that like 46% of people who got killed weren't even wearing their seatbelt 🤯 its crazy how many lives can be saved just by wearing a simple piece of cloth. And yeah, speeding is still super deadly, but at least the number of fatalities went down by 82 which is kinda good news I guess? But we need to keep pushing for more education and awareness campaigns because if people are getting killed while driving recklessly or impaired then there's gotta be some work done on that front too 💡

🚗💡 I feel like this news is a big reminder that we gotta be super responsible when we're behind the wheel! Like, it's easy to get distracted or wanna go faster, but that's just not worth risking our lives...or someone else's 🤕. And can you believe 46% of people who got killed weren't even wearing their seatbelts?! That's crazy talk 😲. It just goes to show how important it is to follow the rules and be mindful while driving. We gotta take this road safety thing seriously, guys! 💯

😊 so its actually kinda cool that pennsylvania saw a record low in road fatalities last year... i mean, 1,127 deaths is still way too many but at least its a decline. and on the bright side, underage drinking related crashes are down which is awesome news 🎉 we should be seeing more of that kind of progress. its also crazy to think that half the people killed in those accidents weren't even wearing their seatbelts... like, what were they thinking?! 🤯 but overall, lets just say im feeling pretty optimistic about pennsylvanias road safety efforts 💪

omg how can they not wear seatbelts lol like what kinda crazy person drives without a seatbelt 🙄 46% is insane, i'm all for strict enforcement of seatbelt laws ASAP. and yeah speeding and drunk driving are a huge problem but at least the overall fatalities are low...fingers crossed those numbers keep going down 💨

🚗👍 I'm glad to see Pennsylvania's road fatalities going down, that's a huge relief for all of us who care about staying safe on our roads. But at the same time, I'm not surprised that speeding and drunk driving are still top killers... it just shows how much work we still have to do to make sure everyone's getting home safely. 🙏 46% of people not wearing seatbelts is crazy though, like what even is the point if you're gonna die? 😱 anyway, let's hope more people take these road safety tips seriously and we can get to zero fatalities soon... it's a matter of life and death 💀

🚗😕 I'm actually kinda relieved that speeding and drunk driving aren't killing more people. It's crazy to think that a seatbelt can literally save your life like 46% of the time 🙌. But at the same time, I feel like we're just scratching the surface of what needs to be done. We need to start targeting distracted driving and traffic law violations more seriously - those are major contributors to accidents too. And let's not forget about cyclist safety... it's getting better, but there's still so much work to be done 🚴‍♂️💡

🚗👀 I'm glad to see PennDOT is acknowledging the importance of road safety, but a record low in fatalities doesn't mean we should let our guard down. Those 46% who weren't wearing seatbelts are a major red flag 🚨. It's also concerning that speeding and drunk driving remain top killers – we need to do more than just reduce crashes, we need to prevent them from happening in the first place 💡. And let's not forget about cyclists – 1,100 fatalities since 2020 is just staggering 😱. We can't wait for "good news" when it comes to road safety; we need action now 🕒️.

🚗👍 so that's cool that pennsylvania had a record low fatalites last year but like speeding and drunk driving still kill people lol how can we expect to get rid of these bad habits if ppl arent willing to change? also why do 90% of fatalities happen when ppl have had too much booze 🤯 anyway i guess its good to see underage drinking-related crashes going down but what about all the other stuff like distracted driving and improper turns that are killing ppl on the roads gotta do better than just relying on ppl to follow rules 🚨

🚗😬 I'm glad to hear PA saw a record low in fatal car crashes, but those numbers can be super deceiving. Like, yeah we're killing fewer people on the road, but it's still 360 lives lost every year – that's not something to brag about! 😕 And speeding is still like, a HUGE problem... I'm surprised more ppl aren't talking about that 🤔... and what's up with all those fatalities involving drunk driving? Like, 72% of cases involved men behind the wheel – what's going on there? 💀
