Palo Alto football coach David DeGeronimo will not return, says school wants ‘fresh start’

Palo Alto Football Coach David DeGeronimo Leaves After Winless Season, School Seeks Fresh Start

The Palo Alto High School football program is moving on from coach David DeGeronimo after a season marked by controversy and disappointment. The school has announced that it will not renew DeGeronimo's contract, citing the need for a "fresh start."

DeGeronimo's tenure was marred by a winless season and several incidents of poor sportsmanship, including an embarrassing moment during which an assistant coach tackled an opposing player in a game. This move followed quickly after an article published on Mercury News website showing DeGeronimo walking the sidelines while playing against Burlingame, where Palo Alto High School suffered a crushing 35-14 defeat.

The school's decision to part ways with DeGeronimo comes as no surprise, given the recent events that have tarnished the team's reputation. The move also highlights the need for accountability and discipline within the program.

The article goes on to describe how Burlingame defeated Palo Alto High School 35-14 in the first quarter of their game at Palo Alto High School in Palo Alto, Calif., which took place on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

🤔 idk what's goin on with this coach degeronimo guy tho... i mean, one winless season is bad enough but add all the drama and poor sportsmanship? 🙅‍♂️ it's like, you gotta take responsibility for your actions, you know? 🤷‍♂️ seems like a fresh start might be just what the team needs right now. can't have ppl gettin all shook up about some coach doin bad things on the field 😬. anywayz, hope da new coach comes in and helps the team turn their season around 👍

I'm surprised that it took a major embarrassing loss like that for the school to realize they need a change. I mean, who walks off the field during a game? That's just not cool 🤦‍♂️. And now they're saying it's time for a fresh start? Good luck with that. The whole thing reeks of poor leadership and a lack of accountability. Can't say I'm sad to see DeGeronimo go, but it's gonna be tough to get the team back on track. Hope they hire someone who knows what they're doing 💪

I'm not surprised they're letting DeGeronimo go, tbh 🤔. A winless season is a huge letdown for any team, and the sportsmanship issues are just icing on the cake 😒. I feel bad for the kids who have to deal with that kind of coach. But at the same time, the school needs to step up their game (pun intended) 🏈. Part ways with DeGeronimo is the right move, but it's gonna be tough to rebuild trust with the community and fans. Maybe they can bring in some fresh blood and get things back on track? Fingers crossed for the team! 👍

Idk why they're making such a big deal about DeGeronimo's departure 🤷‍♂️. He got a bad rap, imo. One winless season and suddenly he's gotta go? That's not exactly a reason to fire someone 👎. And yeah, the whole assistant coach tackling an opposing player thing was pretty lame 😒, but come on, it's just one mistake! Schools should be focusing on helping their athletes learn from those kinds of mistakes, not making examples out of them 🤔. Maybe Palo Alto High School just needs a fresh start, like they said 😐, but that doesn't mean they gotta get rid of the coach 🙅‍♂️.

I feel bad for the players and staff of Palo Alto High School 🤕. A winless season is tough to swallow, especially when you know it's not because they didn't try hard enough. I think the school made the right call by letting coach DeGeronimo go 👋. It's clear he needs some reflection time on his behavior, and a fresh start can only help them move forward 🚀. Maybe this is an opportunity for them to reboot their program and focus on sportsmanship? Let's hope they come back stronger next season 💪!

omg did u see that espn highlight reel of the burlingame palya alt game? dude was getting smashed 🤯 35-14 is crazy!!! i feel bad for da palya alt players tho they deserve better coach too, idk what went wrong 😔 anyway, u think its gonna make a diff if degeronimo goes or whats the point of even havin a new coach lol

omg u guyz cant believe wat happend!!! david degeronimo is gone wooooo 👏👋 his season was literally a disaster 0-10 what did he expect 😂🤦‍♂️ i mean, who tries to tackle an opponent on the field? 🤯 bad coaching & poor sportsmanship all around lol! 🤣 anywayz, i'm low-key glad tht spartans get a fresh start w/ new coach 👍💪 let's hope dey turn it arond next yr!!! 💥

I'm so confused about why DeGeronimo was coaching a team that's supposed to be good if you know what I mean 🤔🏈. Like, a winless season is pretty bad, but isn't there like some way to turn it around? And what happened with the assistant coach tackling that opposing player? That sounds really rough 😬. Anyway, I'm more worried about my own football team, I need to know which players are good and who's not 🤷‍♀️. Do you think DeGeronimo was a bad coach or just had bad luck? And what's with the Burlingame team doing so well in that game? Did they have like some secret strategy or something? 🤔🏆

oh no!! 😔 poor coach degeronimo... i feel bad for him tho he got a fresh start tho? 🙌 the school needs to move on and rebuild their team, maybe they can find someone new who's all about positive vibes 👍 coach degeronimo had some tough moments but we can't judge him too harshly, right? 💕

🤦‍♂️ just when you think high school sports can't get any crazier... coaches are getting fired for being, well, a little too extra 🙄 i mean, tackling an opposing player? what's next, tackling the refs? 💪 anyway, gotta give the school props for finally doing something about it. accountability and discipline are key, especially in high-pressure environments like sports where drama is already amplified by social media 📱
