Phillies re-sign 8-year veteran with Blue Jays, Yankees ties: Report

Philadelphia Phillies bolster their bullpen depth with re-signing of veteran lefty Tim Mayza on a minor-league deal. The move, reported by Matt Gelb of The Athletic, is the latest addition to a group that also includes Brad Keller, Jonathan Bowlan, Zach Pop, and Trevor Richards in an effort to fortify the team's relief corps.

Mayza, 34, was claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates last August and made eight appearances for the Phillies late in the season. While he allowed four earned runs in 7 1/3 innings, his inclusion on the National League Division Series roster hinted at a deeper commitment to the team.

A former Toronto Blue Jays stalwart, Mayza had excelled from 2021 to 2023, boasting a 1.53 ERA over 53 1/3 innings. He was arguably the Blue Jays' most valuable reliever during that period, earning a wild-card playoff berth in 2022. However, his performance declined precipitously last year, prompting release in July.

Mayza's decision to return to the Phillies, however, may not have been motivated solely by a desire to rejoin the organization he left just over a year ago. Chris Cotillo of MassLive reported earlier this week that the Boston Red Sox had expressed interest in Mayza before his eventual decision to stay with Philadelphia.

With the 2024 season now behind him and a new campaign ahead, Mayza will face stiff competition for one of the final spots in the Phillies bullpen during spring training.

I gotta say, it's weird how some guys just lose their mojo overnight ๐Ÿคฏ. Tim Mayza was an absolute rockstar with the Blue Jays from 2021 to 2023, and then he just disappears last year ๐Ÿ˜. I mean, a 1.53 ERA is crazy good, especially over that long stretch! And now he's back with Philly on a minor deal? I'm not sure if it's about the organization or if he really wants to revive his career ๐Ÿ’ช.

But here's the thing - competition for those bullpen spots is gonna be real ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Guys like Keller and Bowlan are gonna be gunning for those roles, and Mayza is gonna have to prove himself all over again ๐Ÿค”. Still, I'm rooting for him - he's got the talent, and if anyone can make a comeback, it's him ๐Ÿ’ซ.

I think its cool how the Phillies are building up their bullpen like that ๐Ÿค”
they got some good guys coming back and signing new ones too
Tim Mayza was a pro with the Blue Jays, had some great years ๐Ÿ“ˆ but then his numbers went downhill so he got released
now hes getting another shot with Philly and I hope he makes the most of it ๐ŸŽฏ

I gotta say, I'm surprised they're bringin' back Tim Mayza on a minor-league deal ๐Ÿค”. I mean, his numbers last year were straight up ugly, and you'd think he'd be tryin' to prove himself elsewhere ๐Ÿ’ช. But hey, I guess it's always good to give a guy another chance, right? And with the Red Sox sniffin' around him, I'm curious to see if he's really lookin' to stay in Philly this time around ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I mean, don't get me wrong, Mayza was a solid reliever for the Blue Jays back in the day (1.53 ERA is no joke!), but that last year of his with the Pirates... yeah, that wasn't so great ๐Ÿ˜. Still, if he's lookin' to recapture some of that magic, maybe this stint with the Phillies will be just what the doc ordered ๐Ÿคž.

One thing for sure, though: the competition in spring training is gonna be fierce ๐Ÿ’ฅ. Brad Keller, Jonathan Bowlan, Zach Pop, and Trevor Richards are all vying for those final spots, so Mayza's gonna have to bring his A-game if he wants to make the cut ๐Ÿ”’.

๐Ÿคฉ I'm loving this move by the Phillies! Tim Mayza was solid last year and showed he's still got it when we picked him up. Not many people knew about his struggles with the Blue Jays, but now he gets a second chance and I think he'll thrive with our team ๐ŸŒŸ. The fact that Boston wanted him too is just proof that he's got skills and they want him on their roster. Bring him back to Philly and let him show us what he can do again! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค” so the phillies are tryna strengthen their bullpen... think its good they signed mayza tho ๐Ÿค‘ he had some great years with the blue jays and his era was crazy low 1.53 lol, but last year was a bit of a drop off ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ still got some pop left in him i guess. hope he can bring that magic back to philly ๐Ÿ‘

So they're bringing back Tim Mayza? ๐Ÿค” I mean, he's been through some ups and downs with his performance... like from 2021 to 2023, he was pretty good, but last year was a disaster ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. And then there's the thing where the Red Sox were interested in him too... it's kinda weird that he chose Philly over them? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Anyway, I guess they're hoping he'll bring some stability to their bullpen ๐Ÿ’ช. With all these guys coming back, it's gonna be a tough spot for Mayza to get on the roster... but hey, you never know, right? ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿค” so they're bringing back Tim Mayza on a minor league deal? that's an interesting move. I mean, he had some good years with the Blue Jays but then his performance just tanked last year. what changed? was it the team, the coaching, or something else entirely? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

and another thing, why did the Red Sox even come after him in the first place? they're a top-notch team, you'd think they could do better than a guy who's not exactly lights out on the mound anymore. ๐Ÿค” was it just a throwaway offer to see if Mayza would jump ship? ๐Ÿ˜’

anyway, I'm curious to see how this plays out in spring training. will Mayza be able to regain some of that form from his heyday with the Blue Jays or is he just going through the motions? ๐Ÿ’ช

Man I'm loving this move by the Phillies ๐Ÿคฉ! They really are building up that bullpen like they're going to make it all the way this year. And Tim Mayza is a great addition, I mean he's been around the block a few times with the Blue Jays and did pretty well for himself. But you could tell last season was a tough one for him, I don't blame him for wanting to come back home. Still though, gotta keep an eye on those spring training battles - it's gonna be intense! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

๐Ÿค” I'm all about the Maximalist approach when it comes to bullpen depth - you can never have too many options! The Phillies just proved that by re-signing Tim Mayza on a minor-league deal, and now they've got an even more stacked relief corps ๐Ÿ†. It's crazy how much talent was left over on the market this offseason - I mean, Brad Keller, Jonathan Bowlan, Zach Pop, and Trevor Richards were all scooped up, too! ๐Ÿคฏ The thing is, Mayza's gotta prove himself all over again after a decent but inconsistent 2024 campaign. Can he bounce back like he did from 2021 to '23? Only time will tell ๐Ÿ”ฎ

just saw the news about tim mayza re-signing with philly - think it's a smart move by the phils to bolster their bullpen depth ๐Ÿค”. mayza has had some ups and downs throughout his career, but that 1.53 era in 2022 was insane! ๐Ÿ™Œ he's definitely got skills. not sure what kind of competition he'll face out there for a spot on the roster, but i'm rooting for him to make it work ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐ŸŒŸ just saw that Tim Mayza is back with the Phillies! I gotta respect this guy's dedication to finding his groove again after a rough 2023 season. 34 and still bringing it, ya know? ๐Ÿ™Œ from his Blue Jays days, he was on fire, so it'll be interesting to see if he can recapture that magic in Philly. The bullpen depth is looking strong with this new addition... ๐Ÿ’ช

So like, I think it's cool that Tim Mayza is back with the Phillies ๐Ÿค”. He had some good years with the Blue Jays before things went downhill last season... idk what happened, but he was supposed to be a solid reliever ๐Ÿ˜•. It's nice that they're giving him another chance to show what he's got ๐Ÿ’ช.

I mean, I'm no expert, but it seems like the Phillies are building a strong bullpen ๐Ÿ“ˆ. They've got some decent guys already in place and now Mayza is coming back... I think they'll be a tough team to beat come playoff time ๐Ÿ”ฅ. But for Mayza, he's gotta prove himself all over again ๐Ÿ’ช. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out this spring ๐ŸŒž

Ugh, this is just great... another veteran player coming back to a team that's basically rehashing the same old relief corps ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, what's next? Signing an entire team full of has-beens and hoping they magically revive their careers like Tim Mayza did last year? The guy was a stud from 2021-2023, but then completely tanked in '24 and now he's back? Red Sox were interested before he chose Philly, huh? That just says more about the state of the Phillies' bullpen than anything else ๐Ÿค”. Mayza's gonna have to prove himself all over again, and I'm not holding my breath...

idk, i think this is kinda weird that they're re-signing tim mayza on a minor-league deal lol ๐Ÿค” I mean, he was doing pretty well when he was with the blue jays, but then his performance just tanked and now he's coming back to philly? maybe he wants some fresh start or something? ๐Ÿ˜’ also i'm kinda surprised they didn't give him a shot at making the team out of spring training, like, you'd think they'd want to give him another chance... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค” You know what's crazy about this story? It's not just about Tim Mayza signing a minor-league deal to rejoin the Phillies, it's about his journey and the lessons he can teach us all. Think about it, we've all been in situations where we feel like we're stuck or going through a tough time. Maybe we even felt like giving up on our dreams, just like Mayza did when his performance declined.

But what if instead of quitting, we chose to regroup and try again? What if we used that experience as an opportunity to learn and grow, not just for ourselves but also for others? I mean, the Red Sox were interested in him before he decided to stay with Philly, what does that say about his value? It says a lot about how hard he's willing to work and adapt to come back stronger.

So let this be a lesson to us all: even when things seem tough or like we're not good enough, we always have the power to choose. We can choose to give up or we can choose to rise above and try again with renewed passion and determination ๐ŸŒŸ

I'm low-key excited about this move! ๐Ÿค” I mean, Tim Mayza has been through the wringer last year with his performance declining like crazy, but he's still got that stuff on him that made him a top reliever for the Jays ๐ŸŒŸ. Signing him to a minor league deal is a great risk-reward situation - if he can get back to form, it'll be huge for Philly's bullpen! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿคฃ So Tim Mayza is like that friend who's always drama-free, but then suddenly you find out they were shopping around to other teams and now they're back with their old squad ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, 1.53 ERA is some sick stuff from 2021-2023, but then he just tanked last year and now he's trying to revive his career in Philly ๐Ÿ’ช. I guess you could say the Red Sox were like "meh" on him, but who knows what was going through their minds ๐Ÿค”? Anyway, Mayza's back in the Phillies bullpen, and I'm sure Brad Keller is just thrilled to have some competition for a spot ๐Ÿ˜‚. Bring it on spring training!
