Police fatally shoot man on Upper East Side after NYPD says he opened fire at officers

Police fatally shoot man on Upper East Side after NYPD says he opened fire at officers.

An armed 20-year-old man was shot and killed by the police in a deadly confrontation on Manhattan's Upper East Side late Thursday, authorities said. According to officials, the young adult allegedly threatened to open fire on a hospital before firing at law enforcement officers.

Eyewitnesses reported that the man approached two men at his building on Madison Avenue, pulling out a gun and pointing it at them after seemingly no provocation had occurred. The victim then walked into a nearby deli where he pointed the same gun at a worker, saying "Call 911, I'm going down to the hospital to shoot it up".

The man stole the worker's phone before fleeing south on Madison Avenue. Moments later, he briefly entered Mount Sinai Hospital before leaving and placing his firearm next to a tree outside.

While inside the hospital, the suspect came face-to-face with an off-duty NYPD officer working security, according to authorities. In the ensuing struggle, both parties were in danger of being injured by each other's actions until backup arrived.

The man was confronted again as he exited Mount Sinai Hospital after picking up his dropped firearm and continuing south on Madison Avenue. It was only at this point that officers from the 19th precinct noticed him and immediately opened fire when he began firing back at them in a crowded area near multiple passengers who were just disembarking an MTA bus.

As part of their investigation, police found out that it was his actions around Madison Avenue that led to his demise as they say the man shot first but not for long.

While one may find some sense in taking up arms against those in power due to injustices faced by many individuals around this world who could be classified under that category such as the homeless, the mentally ill or the economically distressed.

🤔 I just can't help but feel so sorry for the young man's family and loved ones... 😢 He was already dealing with some tough stuff in his life, and then to have someone point a gun at him, and he does the same thing to others? It's like this crazy cycle that we're all trying to break free from... 🌪️ But what really gets me is the fact that he didn't even know he was going to be shot by the police in the first place... 🤯 The investigation might say he shot first, but sometimes it feels like these situations are just so messed up and unfair... 😩 It's hard not to think about all the other people out there who are dealing with similar struggles and feeling like they have no way out... 💔

Wow 🤯 this is so crazy how he threatened a hospital and then just walked into it like nothing was gonna happen... I don't know about people getting upset with those in power maybe we need to talk about mental health and some of these things instead? 🤔💡

omg i cant even imagine being in a situation where someone is pointing a gun at u like that 🤯! i mean i feel bad for the guy but also like how did he not think things thru? i was watching this news and it made me think of my friend who struggled with anxiety and stuff, it couldve happened to him too 💔. and yeah taking up arms might sound like a good idea in theory but in reality its just gonna lead to more problems 🤷‍♀️. did u hear about that new movie coming out this spring? i heard its gonna be soooo good 🎥! btw whats the deal with mta buses having those seats that dont recline? are they even a thing anymore 😒

Man, I'm so down on this whole situation 🤕. Like, I get it, people are fed up with the system and stuff, but violence ain't the answer, you know? It's like, we're already losing so many lives to senseless shootings and police brutality... can't we just find a way to address these issues without resorting to violence? 🤝

I mean, this guy was just trying to make some noise about his frustrations, but what did he really achieve by putting himself and others in harm's way? It's like, we need to keep talking, protesting, and advocating for change – not resorting to it ourselves. 💬

And can we please talk about the state of our mental health system? Like, if this guy was struggling with his own demons, why didn't anyone intervene sooner? 🤕 We need better support systems in place for people who are struggling.

Anyway, my two cents... just wish we could all just get along and find a way to create positive change without hurting each other. 🌈💖

😕🤕 this is crazy what's going on with police and mental health like they say the guy was threatening hospital but then what's gonna happen to him next? 🚨 is we try to address issues of inequality and social injustice in our society then why are people being shot by cops when all they wanna do is get help? 🤝 we need to find a balance between keeping public safe and providing support for those who really need it, can't just resort to violence 🌟

man, i feel bad 4 dis guy, sounds like he was havin a mental break & didnt no what 2 do 🤕. dont get me wrong, police have 2 protect us, but sometimes u gotta wonder if dey're reeeeally tryna help instead of just tryna control ppl's actions, ya know? i mean, hes sayin he's gonna go shoot up a hospital & suddenly dey pop out wit guns drawn? dat sounds like a bit too much, dont it?
