A deadly shooting at a Chipotle restaurant near Temple University has left authorities searching for three suspects, all between 16 and 17 years old. The teen, Khyon Smith-Tate, was found dead in the bathroom with a single gunshot wound to his chest on Monday evening, prompting an investigation.
Surveillance footage shows Smith-Tate entering the bathroom with another person before being fatally shot at around 5:15 p.m. One shell casing was discovered at the scene, and police are now seeking three suspects matching specific descriptions.
According to eyewitnesses, the restaurant was in the midst of a dinner rush when the shooting occurred. Police have interviewed customers and employees who were present during the incident.
The Chipotle location, situated across the street from Temple's TECH Center, has been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure. The company has released a statement expressing its outrage over the tragedy and vowing to cooperate with the investigation.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic incident that occurred at our restaurant on the 1100 block of Montgomery Avenue in Philadelphia... Our thoughts are with the victim's family and loved ones," Chipotle stated.
Temple University President John Fry and Vice President Jennifer Griffin have also weighed in on the tragedy, stating that "the loss of life to gun violence is a profound tragedy" and expressing their condolences to Smith-Tate's family.
