Philadelphia Police Launch Investigation into Fatal Chipotle Shooting Near Temple University Campus
A 16-year-old boy, identified as Khyon Smith-Tate, was shot to death at a Chipotle restaurant in North Philadelphia on Monday night. The teenager, who was found with a gunshot wound to his chest, died shortly after arriving at the scene.
According to police, Smith-Tate had entered the bathroom where he was fatally shot and left it with another person before being discovered by authorities around 5:24 p.m. Investigators have confirmed that one shell casing was recovered from the scene.
Surveillance footage obtained by NBC10 appears to show the moment when Smith-Tate walked into the bathroom, accompanied by another individual. The restaurant was in the midst of a dinner rush at the time of the shooting.
Police are now searching for three suspects, all aged 16-17 years old, who were allegedly involved in the incident. One suspect is described as having dreadlocks and wearing a black coat, pink hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and carrying a red backpack. The second suspect was reportedly wearing similar attire to the first, but with a different color backpack.
The third suspect also has dreadlocks, and is said to be wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and carrying a dark-colored backpack.
Police have spoken to customers and employees who were present at the restaurant during the shooting, as part of their ongoing investigation. The Chipotle location on Montgomery Avenue has been temporarily closed, and the company has offered support to its staff by providing access to counseling services.
Temple University's administration has released a statement expressing their condolences for the victim's family and loved ones, acknowledging that "the loss of life to gun violence is a profound tragedy."
