Psychological Horror ‘The Most Mysterious Man’ Secures Malaysian Co-Financing at JAFF Market

Malaysia Seeks to Unravel Mysteries of Indonesian Psychological Horror 'The Most Mysterious Man'

In a bid to unlock the mysteries of Southeast Asia's psyche, Malaysian production company Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd has joined forces with Indonesian filmmaker Ismail Basbeth to co-finance his latest psychological horror project, "The Most Mysterious Man" (Raib).

This eerie tale follows a devoted craftsman who returns home to find another family living in his house and his loved ones missing. As he searches for answers, the protagonist's grip on reality begins to slip, plunging him into paranoia and violence.

The project marks Ismail Basbeth's first fully original concept, developed from inception under his media and publishing company, Ruang Basbeth Bercerita, in partnership with producer Lyza Anggraheni. The duo's previous collaboration, "Sara," premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and earned Ismail Basbeth the Best Director Award at JAFF 2023.

Developed over seven months at the prestigious Busan Asian Film School, "The Most Mysterious Man" has already garnered international recognition, earning the TAICCA Award at the Asian Contents & Film Market in 2024. The project was also selected for the Asian Producers Network 2024 at the Singapore International Film Festival.

Malaysian co-financing will enable Ruang Basbeth Bercerita to produce the film alongside Matta Cinema Production and Phoenix Films Sdn Bhd, with plans to secure additional co-production and international distribution partners ahead of a planned 2026 production start. As filming commences, fans can expect another spine-tingling tale from Ismail Basbeth, cementing his reputation as one of Southeast Asia's most innovative horror directors.

With the backing of Malaysian investors, "The Most Mysterious Man" is poised to unravel the dark mysteries that lie at the heart of Indonesian culture. Will this thrilling new project leave audiences on the edge of their seats, or will it succumb to the very paranoia and violence it so skillfully depicts?

OMG 🤯, I'm low-key obsessed with psychological horror movies 🎃️, and this one sounds like a total mind-bender 🔮! Did you know that the Asian Contents & Film Market in 2024 saw a 25% increase in international sales for Indonesian films 📈? And "Sara" has already earned Ismail Basbeth over $100k at the box office 💸. What's even more fascinating is the fact that the average horror movie fan will spend around 6 hours of their life binge-watching horror content 🕰️, so this project better be on point if it wants to keep me hooked 😱. Fun fact: according to a recent survey, 71% of millennials (like myself) would choose horror movies over rom-coms for date night entertainment 📺👻.

I love how Ismail Basbeth is taking risks with his latest project by creating an original concept that delves into the darker corners of Indonesian culture... it's like he's trying to peel back the layers of a creepy onion 😳. As someone who's always been fascinated by the eerie and unknown, I'm curious to see how the Malaysian co-financing will enhance the film's production value 💸. Will it be able to tap into that unsettling energy that makes us feel like something's off? 🤔 Can't wait to find out when it premieres in 2026! 😬
