Remembering John Beam: Celebration of life to be held for legendary Oakland coach Saturday

Hundreds Gather to Honor Legendary Oakland Coach John Beam as His Life is Celebrated with a Moment of Reflection

A moment of reflection will be held on Saturday for the late legendary Oakland Coach John Beam, at the Henry J Kaiser Center for the Arts in Oakland. Beam died last Friday after being shot on campus the day before, at Laney College where he spent his final 20 years as a coach. The community came together to celebrate the life of this larger-than-life figure who helped countless athletes turn their lives around and became an integral part of the Oakland community.

Beam was a football legend in the Bay Area with over four decades of experience in coaching before becoming solely Laney College's athletic director last year. Outside of the Bay Area, Beam is probably best known from Netflix's hit show "Last Chance U." The news of his passing has sent shockwaves through the sports world and beyond.

Beam will be remembered by his loved ones as a pillar in the Oakland community who went above and beyond to help those around him. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, and three granddaughters. As a tribute to Beam's life and legacy, hundreds gathered on Friday night to honor this larger-than-life figure whose impact will be felt for years to come.

While tickets to the in-person celebration are sold out, you can watch it live here on ABC7 in the video player above. The moment of reflection is scheduled to start at 2 p.m., and those who cannot attend in person can pay their respects from home.

Man, I'm still reeling from the news of John Beam's passing πŸ€•. It's crazy to think that the guy was just a regular coach turned legend, but his impact on the community is still gonna be felt for ages. I love how the city came together to celebrate his life and legacy - it's clear he meant a lot to the people of Oakland. What I find really inspiring is how he used his platform to help athletes turn their lives around, that's real hero stuff πŸ’ͺ. And can we talk about his Netflix show? "Last Chance U" was more than just a sports docu-series, it was a showcase for the power of mentorship and second chances. Beam's passing is a reminder that we've lost too many people who were making a difference in their communities, but his legacy will keep on inspiring us 🌟.

Man, this John Beam thing got me thinking... what's going on with our society when a guy like him, who's all about giving back to the community, gets taken away like that? I mean, he was a legend, not just for his coaching skills, but for being a positive influence on people's lives. You see how many people came out to pay their respects to him - it's like we're realizing what's truly important: family, friends, and the community.

But, at the same time, think about the fact that he was shot on campus. What's going on with our schools? Can't we find a way to keep our communities safe for people like John Beam who are making a difference? It's not just about him; it's about us as a society and what kind of world do we want to leave behind.

And, you know, I'm also wondering about the role that sports play in shaping our youth. John Beam was more than just a coach - he was a mentor, a leader... he showed young athletes that there's more to life than just playing ball. So, what's next? How can we build on his legacy and create opportunities for kids like him to grow and thrive?

I'm literally so bummed that he passed away πŸ’”... I mean, not! He seemed like a super sad guy all the time on Netflix, but maybe his death was for the best? Like, we don't know what's going on behind those serious Coach Beam face expressions 🀯. On one hand, it's awesome that so many people are coming together to celebrate his life and legacy - I mean, not if they're all just pretending to be sad πŸ˜”. Honestly though, can we talk about how this show "Last Chance U" is kinda problematic? Like, what even is the point of making a whole TV series out of someone's personal struggles? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ But anywayz, I guess Coach Beam was pretty important to the Oakland community and all that jazz... maybe he'd be happy we're still talking about him 😊.

just saw this news about John Beam... what a legend 🀯 his passing is such a loss for the community he touched so many lives ❀️ it's crazy that someone with so much impact can be taken away in an instant πŸ’” i've seen some of his interviews on last chance u, man, the dude was infectious πŸ˜‚ and had this energy about him that inspired people to chase their dreams πŸ’ͺ we'll all miss him

πŸ€” I mean, what's up with all the fuss over John Beam? Guy was a decent coach, I guess 🏈... but thousands showing up for his memorial? Not bad, but kinda weird too πŸ˜‚. Guess when you're 'larger-than-life', people feel obligated to attend your funeral πŸ˜…. Anyway, I'm sure he's looking down on us all with a big smile, helping athletes turn their lives around from wherever he is 🌟. Tickets sold out? That's cute πŸ’β€β™€οΈ... now if only they'd do something for his wife and the grandkids instead of just him 🀝.

ugh I'm so saddened by John Beam's passing πŸ€•...he was like a godfather to us sports fans out here, you know? everyone's talking about how he helped these kids turn their lives around on that show "Last Chance U" but let's be real it was always his love for the game and giving back to his community what made him so legendary πŸ™. I remember watching Laney College games when I was younger and seeing Coach Beam's passion & energy, he just lit up the field ⚽️. now he's leaving a void but his legacy will live on thru all those lives he touched ❀️...also, can we get an update on that memorial service? πŸ€”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... I mean, John Beam's impact on people's lives was so profound that even though he's gone now, his memory will continue to inspire generations to come 🀯. It's crazy to think about how one person can have such a ripple effect, changing the lives of countless athletes and community members. What does it say about us as a society when someone like Beam, who was already doing so much good, is then taken from us? πŸ’”

πŸ™ just heard about John Beam's passing... what a legend! He was more than just a coach, he was a mentor, a father figure, to so many young athletes. His impact on the Oakland community will be deeply missed but his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched. I have no words for how saddened I am by this news... it's a reminder that life is precious and we must make every moment count πŸ’”πŸˆ

πŸ™ It's disheartening to think about the fleeting nature of life, as exemplified by Coach John Beam's tragic passing πŸ€•. His enduring legacy, however, serves as a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of countless others 🌟. As an athletic director and coach for nearly four decades, Beam was undoubtedly a pillar in the Oakland community πŸ’ͺ. The outpouring of love and support from athletes, family members, and fans alike is truly heartwarming ❀️. It's a poignant reminder that our lives are intertwined with those around us, and that the ripples we create can continue to resonate long after we're gone 🌊.

ugh, what's the point of all these celebrations? he was a coach, not some kind of saint πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. people are just gonna put him on a pedestal now and forget about his flaws... or lack thereof πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. newsflash: nobody's perfect. he might've helped a few athletes turn their lives around, but what about the ones he messed up? πŸ€”. seems to me like everyone's just gonna gloss over that part of his life because it's easier to just remember the good stuff πŸŽ‰. sad that people are still fawning all over him after only being gone for a few days πŸ’€. mark my words, we'll be hearing about how great he was in 5 years when someone writes a tell-all book about his coaching career πŸ“š.

What a sad day for all those who knew Coach Beam πŸ€•... I've seen some amazing people in my years, but it's hard not to be inspired by someone like him. He had this way of making everyone feel like they were the only one, you know? And that was especially true when he was coaching football - he took athletes from all walks of life and helped them turn their lives around. I'm sure his legacy will live on through all those lives he touched ❀️... it's a shame we lost him too soon πŸ˜”.

πŸ™ I'm really saddened by John Beam's passing... he was definitely a legend in his own right, but it's what he did for the people around him that will be remembered most. I mean, have you seen that show "Last Chance U" on Netflix? He was like a mentor to those kids, helping them turn their lives around and giving them a second chance... it's amazing to think about the impact one person can have on so many lives. 🀯 I'm sure there are going to be some tough moments at the reflection event tomorrow, but I hope his family finds comfort in all the love and support they're getting from the community. πŸ’•

Just saw that the community came together to celebrate John Beam's life... feels right, but also kinda sad that it had to be like this πŸ€•. He was a larger-than-life figure who left a huge impact on so many people, and now he's just gone πŸ’”. I mean, can you believe he died after being shot on campus? 😱 It's crazy to think about how his life ended like that... I guess it's good that people are still honoring him and celebrating his legacy though πŸ™. I'm sure he would've wanted that. The fact that Netflix even featured him in their show is a testament to his influence, but I feel like there's more to the story than just his on-screen presence 😐. Anyways, sending love and respects to his family and loved ones during this tough time πŸ€—.

πŸ˜” just saw this thread about John Beam's celebration & I'm like woah, how did I miss this πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ? sounds like he was an amazing coach & pillar of the Oakland community... 20 years at Laney College is no joke πŸ’―. I'm so sorry for his family & loved ones, it's crazy that someone who made such a positive impact on so many lives had to leave us too soon πŸ˜”. what's with all these tributes online tho? can we actually watch the live stream or is it just a video clip? πŸ“Ί

Ugh I'm literally still trying to process how such a wonderful soul like Coach Beam just left us πŸ€•πŸ’” it's so crazy that someone with so much love to give had to go through that senseless tragedy on campus 🚫😱 and now we're all left here picking up the pieces and trying to celebrate his life in any way possible πŸ’– I mean, who does this happen to? Someone who literally helped countless people turn their lives around and became a pillar of this community?! It's just not fair πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ’” I know it's supposed to be a celebration but for me it'll always feel like a eulogy 😒 and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we won't get to see Coach Beam's big personality in person anymore 😭 it's just too much 🀯
