. Hosting a major international event like the World Cup in a country with such a tumultuous government is just asking for trouble. I'm not saying it's going to ruin the tournament or anything, but it's hard to shake off the feeling that it could all go sideways. And you're right, the optics of having an American president who's been pretty vocal about...let's just say, "questioning" certain groups is pretty dodgy. I mean, can you imagine having players from countries with, shall we say, "checkered pasts" with the US government feeling welcome and safe? It's like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet wound

FIFA's whole "football as a unifying force" vibe seems like it's getting watered down by all this negativity
