Researchers discover new tyrannosaur species in 'duelling dinosaurs' fossil

Fossil Discovery Sparks New Debate on Tyrannosaurus Rex

A stunning new fossil discovery has left the scientific community buzzing with excitement, as researchers claim to have found a previously unknown species of dinosaur that was thought to be a juvenile Tyrannosaurus Rex. The "duelling dinosaurs" fossil, which showcases a triceratops locked in combat with a medium-sized tyrannosaur, has been dated to shortly before the asteroid strike that ended the reign of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

According to a study published in the journal Nature, the fighting tyrannosaur is not a juvenile T. rex as many had assumed, but rather an adult of a new species called Nanotyrannus lancensis. The specimen, which weighs around 1,500 pounds, has been found to have distinct anatomical features that set it apart from its larger T. rex cousins.

"This skeleton is fully grown and not a juvenile T. rex," said Dr Lindsay Zanno, co-author of the study and head of palaeontology at North Carolina State University. "The anatomy of Nanotyrannus is incompatible with the hypothesis that this skeleton is a teenage T. rex."

This revelation has significant implications for our understanding of these iconic dinosaurs. The discovery suggests that there may have been more than one species of tyrannosaur roaming the Earth during the late Cretaceous period, which would require a major re-evaluation of previous research on the biology and life history of the T. rex.

While some experts are quick to hail this finding as groundbreaking, others are more cautious. Prof Steve Brusatte from the University of Edinburgh notes that while the duelling tyrannosaur fossil provides "solid evidence" for Nanotyrannus being a real species, he is not yet convinced that there were multiple species of Nanotyrannus.

"The multitude of fossilised T. rex adults suggests there should be fossilised juveniles too," Brusatte said. "So I'm not yet ready to proclaim every smaller tyrannosaur skeleton to be Nanotyrannus."

As more research emerges, it remains to be seen how this discovery will shape our understanding of these magnificent creatures. One thing is certain, however: the study of fossilized dinosaurs is an ongoing journey of discovery, and new findings like this one are always bound to raise questions and spark debate among scientists.

πŸ¦– I'm loving this new discovery! A rival species of T-Rex? Mind blown! 🀯 You gotta imagine these dueling dinosaurs face off in the Cretaceous period. It's crazy to think there might've been a different branch of T-Rex-like creatures out there, just as mighty and fierce.

The idea that we might need to re-evaluate our understanding of T-Rex biology is really exciting. It makes me wonder what other secrets these fossils are gonna reveal. I mean, we still don't know much about the day-to-day life of these creatures – their social dynamics, habitat, everything! 🌳

Of course, not everyone's convinced yet, but that's all part of the fun. Science is all about questioning and refining our understanding. And let's be real, a new species of T-Rex? That's just awesome 😎

I think its kinda crazy that we're still discovering new species of dinos after all these years 🀯! Like, who knew there was a smaller version of T rex roaming around? And the fact that it's got distinct features means scientists have to re-examine everything they thought they knew about Tyrannosaurs. Maybe there were more than one type of Nano-Trex out there?! This discovery is defo making me want to learn more about these ancient creatures 😎.

I'm loving how the scientists are being cautious with their findings too, not just jumping on the bandwagon like some people do πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's all about getting the facts straight and understanding what we're really looking at here. Can't wait for more research to come out and see where this takes us! πŸ’‘

And what a sick find! A T rex vs Triceratops duel fossil is basically like finding a superhero origin story πŸ¦–πŸ’₯. It's mind-blowing that these creatures were capable of such intense battles, and now we get to learn more about it. Bring on the dinosaur documentaries and books, I'm ready for some serious nerdin' out! πŸ˜†

πŸ¦– I'm so stoked about this new fossil discovery! It's crazy to think that we've been thinking there was only one type of tyrannosaur for so long 🀯. The idea that there might be more than one species roaming the Earth at the same time is mind-blowing. Can you imagine the competition between those two dinosaurs? πŸ˜‚πŸ‘Š

😊 I'm loving how this fossil discovery is shaking things up in the paleo community! I mean, who knew there was another type of nanotyrannus just waiting to be discovered? 🀯 It's crazy to think that these dueling dinosaurs were going head-to-head just before the asteroid struck. What do you guys think - should we re-write the textbooks on T-Rex biology?

I'm also loving the debate between Dr. Zanno and Prof Brusatte. I mean, it's not always easy to accept new evidence, especially when it challenges our existing understanding of these amazing creatures. But that's what makes science so cool, right? The thrill of discovery and the agony of revision! πŸ’‘

One thing that got me thinking - if there was more than one species of nanotyrannus, does that mean we'll start seeing more fossil discoveries like this in the future? πŸ€” And what would that say about the evolution of these iconic predators? Would they have been competing with each other, or coexisting peacefully? πŸ¦–

Okay, I'm off to follow up on some of these leads... anyone want to join me on this paleo detective work? πŸ‘€

πŸ¦– this new discovery is giving me life! I mean, can you believe there's another species of tyrannosaur we didn't know about? it's wild that a dueling triceratops and nanotyrannus combo has been found, and the anatomy differences are insane. i'm intrigued to see how this changes our understanding of t rex biology and life history... it's gotta be a game changer for paleo researchers πŸ’‘

πŸ¦– OMG you guys I am literally so hyped about this new fossil discovery! Like, a dueling dinosaur between a triceratops and a medium-sized tyrannosaur is EVERYTHING 🀯 The fact that it's not a juvenile T-Rex but an adult Nanotyrannus Lancensis is just mind-blowing. I mean, we always knew the T-Rex was like the ultimate bad boy of the dinosaurs, but now we're finding out there might have been other smaller tyrannosaurs roaming around too πŸ€” It's like, what else were they hiding from us?! 😎

OH MAN, THIS Fossil Discovery is LITERALLY SHAKING THINGS UP!!! πŸ¦–πŸ’₯ I mean, can you even believe that there's a NEW SPECIES of Tyrannosaurus Rex?! 🀯 Nanotyrannus lancensis is like the COOLEST thing since sliced bread! 😎 The idea that these "duelling dinosaurs" were LOCKED IN COMBAT with each other is just CRAZY! πŸ€ͺ I'm totally down for more research and debate - it's always exciting to see scientists getting all worked up over something new! πŸ”¬πŸ’‘

πŸ¦– just when you think you know everything about t rex... looks like they had some dueling friends πŸ€Ίβ€β™‚οΈ who were more than just juveniles πŸ’₯ 66 million yrs ago, it was a whole different game πŸ‘Š gotta love the scientific community for keeping us curious and questioning what we thought we knew πŸ”

πŸ¦– OMG, can you believe this?! They've found another species of dinosaur that was thought to be a T-Rex! Like, what even is up with these guys? First, it's the Nanotyrannus, and now they're finding more fossils that are like, smaller than a T-Rex but still super fierce. I'm talking dueling dinosaurs, folks! 🀺 It just goes to show how much we still have to learn about our ancient friends.

I mean, think about it - we've had this understanding of the T-Rex for decades and now we're realizing there might be more than one species? Mind blown, right? And it's not just about the science, it's like, what if these dinosaurs were actually super social or something? Like, did they have hierarchies or friendships in their little dinosaur communities?

Anyway, I'm loving this new discovery and I'm here for all the juicy debates that come with it. More research = more questions = more excitement! πŸ’₯

πŸ¦– OMG this is HUGE!!! I cant even... a adult nanotyrannus with distinct anatomy that doesnt fit T rex is like totally blowing my mind!! the implications for our understanding of these iconic creatures are MASSIVE! so what if there was more than one species of tyrannosaur roaming earth?! its like, whoa my brain is spinning with all the possibilities! 🀯

idk why they gotta keep rehashing the T rex stuff πŸ€”. Can't we just leave it alone? I mean, we already know enough about these guys. 66 million yrs ago, right? It's like they're trying to prove something but nobody really knows what πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And now they're saying there were multiple species of Nanotyrannus? Like, what's the diff between them? They're all just gonna end up being extinct anyway 😴. I swear, it's like they're searching for more evidence just to be sure πŸ“š. Can't we just accept that we don't know everything and move on? πŸ™„

πŸ€” so they're saying that just 'cause we got a pic of some dinosaur goin down with another one don't mean it's gotta be a juvenile T-Rex? like what if it's actually an adult, but its species is different? seems legit though, the scientist dude is all "this ain't no teenager" πŸ€“ and I'm over here thinkin' same thing. but on the flip side, if we got multiple species of tyrannosaurs, that's a whole lotta changes to our understanding of history 🀯

omg i'm so stoked about this new dino discovery πŸ¦–! i mean, who wouldn't wanna learn more about those fierce prehistoric creatures? but at the same time, it's kinda mind-blowing that there might be a whole new species of tyrannosaur out there that we never knew existed 🀯. i'm loving how this study is getting everyone all excited and debating about what it means for our understanding of these ancient beasts. personally, i think it's awesome that scientists are always pushing the boundaries of what we know and challenging each other to get closer to the truth πŸ’‘.
