‘Return To Silent Hill’ Not Welcome By Rotten Tomatoes Critics

Critics are overwhelmingly dismissive of the latest installment in the Silent Hill franchise, "Return to Silent Hill". The film, directed by Christophe Gans and based on the 2001 video game "Silent Hill 2", has been panned for its lazy storytelling and lackluster atmosphere.

Many reviewers have called out the film's inability to recapture the eerie uncertainty of the original game. Beatrice Loayza of the New York Times writes, "Return to Silent Hill aims for a similar uncanniness, but the result is less phantom realm, more jumbled assembly of cutscenes." Similarly, Jesse Hassenger of The Guardian notes that the hero's casual curiosity and obliviousness to danger makes for a tricky proposition.

The film has been criticized for its poor pacing and lack of tension. Jacob Oller of the AV Club bluntly states that it is "goofy and low-rent", while Simon Abrams of RogerEbert.com writes that it delivers more of the same, but with little surprise or excitement.

On the other hand, Dominic Baez of The Seattle Times finds some redeeming qualities in the film's themes and visuals. He notes that despite its flaws, there is something compelling about how the story wraps up and justifies the characters' decisions.

Despite the overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics, audiences have responded with a lukewarm reception, awarding the film a 32% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 100 user reviews.

🤔 this movie's tone is all off, feels like they took every good part of the game and mashed it into a mess, makes me wanna scream when that dude walks into the room for the first time lol

they really need to rewatch the original or get some new writers in here, this story just doesn't add up 🤯

ugh dont be so down about it tho 🤔 the silent hill series has always been super niche and not everyone is gonna get it lol but hey at least someone out there found some redeeming qualities in it, like domonic baez said 🙌 and i mean 32% isnt bad, right? it's still getting people to talk about it and watch it, which is more than i can say for a lot of movies 🎥 so lets just say its a quiet success or something 😏 maybe the critics just needed a little time to warm up to it after watching those other blockbuster flicks this year 🤪

I'm kinda surprised by the mixed reviews on this one 🤔. I mean, I've played the original Silent Hill 2 and it's still one of my all-time fave games. But at the same time, I think we're expecting a bit too much from a film adaptation 😅. It's not like they can replicate the exact experience of playing the game, but maybe that's the point? The atmosphere and tension are still there, even if it's not as "uncanny" as some people want 🌑.

I also think we're being a bit harsh on the film's pacing – I mean, it's not like it's trying to cram 10 hours of gameplay into a 2-hour movie ⏱️. And yeah, maybe the story isn't as twisty-turny as some of the games, but that's just not my cup of tea 🍵.

I do agree with Dominic Baez though – there is something compelling about how the story wraps up and justifies the characters' decisions 👏. It's all about perspective, right? Maybe it's not perfect, but I think it's still worth watching 😊.

dude I'm surprised they're bashing this movie like it's a bad pizza 🍕 I mean come on, it's Silent Hill we're talking about here! all that eerie stuff is supposed to be creepy and whatnot 😅 but I guess if you're looking for a good horror flick with some actual tension, maybe this one ain't the best bet 🤔 still, who am I to judge? 32% on Rotten Tomatoes isn't great, but at least it's not like they made a movie out of cat videos or something 😹

omg I'm so underwhelmed by this new Silent Hill movie 🤔🎃 it seems like they took all the creepiness and uncertainty of the original game, threw it in a blender, and hit puree... what happened to that eerie atmosphere? I mean, I've seen some lazy storytelling in my time but this is on another level 😒

I feel kinda bad for Christophe Gans though, he's got a rep for making atmospheric horror flicks like the 2001 Silent Hill film 🎥. Maybe they shoulda stuck to what works and left out all the new stuff? And poor Jake Oller saying it's "goofy and low-rent"... that stings 😔

Ugh, i feel like they're being way too harsh on this movie 🤷‍♀️. i mean, yes it's not perfect, but come on, its still scaring the crap out of people! 👻 the pacing could be better, and some parts are a bit meh, but the atmosphere is still super creepy and unsettling 🕷️. also, beatrice loayza's review kinda sounds like she was expecting something that it's not trying to be 😐. i think dominic baez has a point though, those themes and visuals are pretty compelling 💡. maybe critics need to chill out a bit and just enjoy the ride 🎢 instead of analyzing every little detail?

omg can't believe they're still making films about a creepy town with fog 🌫️ like what's next? anyway, i guess some ppl love the themes and visuals in Return to Silent Hill 🤔, but those who saw it probably just watched the trailer on repeat 5 times 😴 & thought they were getting something new. 32% rotten on RT is wild, maybe audiences are just trying to be nice? 💁‍♀️

I'm a bit surprised by the strong disdain for "Return to Silent Hill", considering it's based on one of the most critically acclaimed games in the series 🤔. I think some critics are being overly harsh, expecting a film that can replicate the exact same atmosphere as a video game. It's like trying to recreate a digital experience on celluloid – it's just not feasible.

The pacing and tension issues seem like valid concerns, but I don't think they're deal-breakers. Maybe the film is more of a nuanced exploration of the characters' psyche, rather than a straightforward horror movie? The themes of grief and loss are still present, even if some critics might be nitpicking the execution.

It's interesting to see how audiences have reacted, awarding it such a low score despite some redeeming qualities. I guess that just goes to show that expectations can be tricky, especially when it comes to adapting a beloved game into a film 🎥.

I don't think it's fair to trash the whole movie just 'cause some critics didn't get it. I mean, who doesn't love a good underdog story? Dominic Baez is right, the theming and visuals are pretty cool. And yeah, it might not be as scary as the games, but that was always kinda subjective anyway. 32% on Rotten Tomatoes is still better than some other movies out there. Maybe we should just give "Return to Silent Hill" a chance before dismissing it entirely? 🤔👍

I was really hyped for this Silent Hill reboot 🤯 and I've seen like 3 trailers back to back but honestly it looks so bland 😴. I mean, who plays the lead? It's not even a familiar face! How are we supposed to care about the story when the main character is just...there? 🤔 The graphics don't look that bad either, I guess. I've seen better, you know? 📺 I'm still gonna watch it though, just for nostalgia purposes lol 😜

idk man... i went into this movie thinking it was gonna be a total snooze fest 😴 but i actually kinda enjoyed it? don't get me wrong, its not perfect and the pacing can be super slow, but theres something about the way they handled the characters and their motivations that felt kinda deep. like, even when its trying to pull off this super jumpscare-y vibe, there's a moment where you're like "hey wait a minute, why is this guy doing that?" 🤔 still, 32% on rotten tomatoes? thats pretty brutal... maybe the critics just didn't get it?

ugh i feel u guys 🤔, i went to see return to silent hill last nite and was like... what's goin' on here? 😕 the atmospheere is def not as eerie as i remembered from playing the game back in the day 🎮. it feels like they just phoned it in and didn't put enough effort into makin a compelling story 📚. don't get me wrong, i love silenht hill 2, but this movie tries to recapture that magic and just falls flat 🤦‍♂️. 32% on rotten tomatoes? what did ppl expect? 😒 still, gotta respect dom baez's opinion 👏 on the themes & visuals bein redeeming qualities 💯

Man... I was really looking forward to this one too 🤔. It's like they took all the creepy vibes from Silent Hill 2 and just kinda... phoned it in? 📺 The pacing is super slow, and I feel like they're trying to milk every single scary moment for all it's worth without actually putting any real effort into building tension. 🙅‍♂️ On the other hand, I do think some of the themes are pretty interesting - like how the main character's motivations start to unravel towards the end 🤯. But overall, it just feels like a really disappointing take on a classic game. 🎮

omg i totally agree w/ jacob oller about it being goofy and low-rent 🤣 those scenes where they just kinda hang out w/ monsters or what feel so forced i mean i get that the game was already kinda weird, but cmon can't they just play it straight for once? 💀 i do think dom baez had a good point about the themes tho, like how the story wraps up and all that, feels kinda deep 🤔 but overall, yeah, critics r spot on w/ their reviews 🙄

I dunno about this one 🤔. I mean, I love Silent Hill as much as the next person, but I was really expecting something more from Return to Silent Hill 📺. The reviews are pretty harsh and I get what they're saying - it does feel like a jumbled mess at times. But, on the other hand, I've seen some people say that the film's themes and visuals are kinda cool 💡. It's all just really subjective, right? What one person hates, another person might actually enjoy 😐. But honestly, 32% on Rotten Tomatoes seems pretty low even for a bad movie...
