Sen. Durbin presses Kristi Noem about U.S. citizens arrested during feds’ immigration ‘dragnet’

Senator Dick Durbin has taken aim at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over the Trump administration's deportation 'blitz' in the Chicago area. The Illinois Democrat, ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has sent a scathing letter to Noem demanding answers about U.S. citizens caught up in the recent immigration enforcement dragnet.

Noem had previously claimed that no American citizens were arrested or detained during Operation Midway Blitz, but Durbin disputes this, citing reports from the Chicago Sun-Times. He argues that Noem's assertion is "patently false" and highlights the disturbing reality of many U.S. citizens being caught in the Trump administration's indiscriminate and violent enforcement dragnet.

According to Durbin, at least 40 American citizens were arrested in Illinois during late August and early November, with some being held for days without access to their lawyers. He also mentions a recent Supreme Court decision that has left Black and Brown Americans fearing immigration stops based on their race, ethnicity, or job.

The senator highlights specific cases of wrongful detention, including a retired caterer and an Air Force veteran who were zip-tied during a military-style raid in September, as well as a 15-year-old boy held for hours without contact. Durbin stresses that despite federal judges' efforts to rein in the immigration agents, they continue to conduct chaotic and cruel raids.

Durbin has requested records related to the arrests of citizens in immigration raids by December 16, including state-by-state tallies and complaints policies. He emphasizes the need for Congressional oversight due to Noem's attempt to "gut" offices responsible for overseeing ICE officers' conduct and ensuring accountability for unlawful arrests and detention.

The Department of Homeland Security has yet to respond to a request for comment on this matter.

omg, senator durbin is totally right 🤯! i cant believe noem's trying to downplay the fact that american citizens were arrested in chicago during operation midway blitz 🤦‍♂️. like, how can she just deny it and expect ppl to trust her? 😒. i'm so glad durbin is all over this and demanding answers from noem 👊. 40 americans caught up in these raids? that's wild 🤯. and those stories of wrongful detention are just heartbreaking 💔. we need more accountability, like, now 🚨. durbin should def get those records by dec 16th 💪. this is all so messed up 🤷‍♀️.

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s wild that someone as high up in the government like Secretary Noem can just deny information about American citizens being arrested without evidence 🤯. Like, if you didn't want to admit it, couldn't you at least be honest about what we don’t know? It feels kinda sketchy when politicians do that. And I feel bad for those 40 people who got caught up in the raids, especially the ones who were held for days without access to lawyers 🤕. Something needs to change with how immigration enforcement is handled, and this whole thing just makes me wanna shake my head 😒.

omg can you believe what's going on with the Trump admin's deportation blitz in Chicago?! 🤯 like, I'm all for securing borders and all but come on, targeting U.S. citizens is just not cool. Dick Durbin is totally right to call out Kristi Noem on this - it's patently false that no American citizens were caught up in the chaos. I mean, 40 people arrested in Illinois alone? 🤯 and some being held for DAYS without access to lawyers?! that's just cruel.

and what's even more disturbing is that these raids are happening during a time when Black and Brown Americans are already living in fear of immigration stops based on their race or job. It's like, we need Congressional oversight now more than ever! 🙌 Durbin's demands for records and accountability are totally justified. I just hope the Department of Homeland Security comes clean about what really went down during these raids... 🤔

This is getting out of hand! 🚨 Kristi Noem needs to come clean about the Trump admin's deportation 'blitz' in Chicago. 40+ American citizens caught, zip-tied, and held without their lawyers? That's not just a policy issue, it's a human rights crisis! 🤯 The fact that ICE is trying to "gut" offices responsible for oversight is just more proof of this admin's disregard for the Constitution and the law. We need Congress to take action now! 👊

I'm thinking about trying that new food truck near the park 🍔👌 I heard they have the best Korean BBQ tacos... anyway, back to the news - it's just crazy how the Trump admin is still causing problems even after he's out of office 🤯. I mean, shouldn't we be focusing on more pressing issues like climate change or something? I swear, I had a friend who knew someone who was affected by one of those immigration raids and it was super traumatic for them... anyway, I wonder if that food truck is open during the winter months 🍜❄️. Oh wait, what's up with the whole Supreme Court decision thing? Sounds like it could be really bad for innocent people 😕.

🤔 i think durbin is right on point here, we can't just ignore the fact that innocent americans are getting caught up in these deportations 🚫. it's crazy how noem is denying reports of american citizens being detained without access to lawyers 🤯. 40 people were arrested in illinois alone! 📊 what if they weren't even from here? wouldn't we want to protect our own 🤷‍♂️?

🤔 I'm not sure how credible those 40 American citizens arrested in Illinois are, but it sounds like a lot of people got caught up in the chaos 🚨. The idea that there were no American citizens detained during Operation Midway Blitz seems fishy to me 🐟. I mean, if Noem is saying something and Durbin is disputing it, someone should come forward with concrete proof one way or the other 💯.

It's disturbing to hear about those specific cases of wrongful detention - zip-tied, held without access to lawyers... that's some serious stuff 😱. And now Durbin wants records from Noem? That's a pretty big ask 📝. I'm all for Congressional oversight, but this feels like a lot of armchair quarterbacking if you ask me 🏈.

I do agree that something needs to be done about these immigration raids, though 👊. They can't just keep happening with no consequences or accountability 🔒. Maybe we'll get some answers once the records start coming out, but until then... I'm skeptical 😐

🤔 I'm really worried about what's going on with the deportation 'blitzes' in the US. I mean, I've heard stories about people being zip-tied and held for hours without access to their lawyers... it's crazy! 🚫 And to think that at least 40 American citizens were arrested during these raids in Illinois alone is just heartbreaking. 🤕 The fact that some of them were kids and elderly folks too makes me so frustrated. 😡 I don't understand why the government would do this, especially when they're supposed to be protecting us.

I also feel like Senator Durbin's letter is really necessary. He's right to demand answers from Kristi Noem about what happened during Operation Midway Blitz. 🤝 It's not okay for the government to just ignore people and sweep them away without any care or concern. We need more transparency and accountability, especially when it comes to protecting our own citizens. 💡

😬 I'm totally blown away by Senator Durbin's response to Kristi Noem over the deportation 'blitz' in Chicago 🤯. It's clear that Durbin is not buying into Noem's claims about American citizens being left out of the chaos, and his citing of reports from the Chicago Sun-Times says a lot about the scope of the issue 📰.

I mean, can you believe that at least 40 American citizens were arrested in Illinois during those raids? 🤯 That's like, totally unacceptable. And it gets even worse when you hear about people being held for days without access to their lawyers or any kind of human decency 😩. It's like, we're living in some kind of dystopian nightmare.

The fact that Durbin is pushing back on Noem's attempts to "gut" offices responsible for overseeing ICE officers' conduct and ensuring accountability just shows how serious he takes this issue 🙌. I think it's time for Congress to step up its oversight game and hold these people accountable for their actions 💪.

It's also super concerning that the Department of Homeland Security hasn't responded to Durbin's request for comment yet 🤔. This just goes to show that they're not taking this seriously enough, or maybe they're trying to hide something 🤫. Either way, it's up to us to keep pushing for truth and justice 💪.

I am so worried about these innocent americans getting caught up in the deportation blitz 🤯💔 i cant believe senator durbin is fighting for them its about time someone held Noem accountable for her lies she needs to come clean about what really happened during those raids i mean who gets zip-tied and detained without access to a lawyer thats just crazy talk 🚫😱

What's going on here 🤔? So, like, the senator is calling out Noem for saying that no American citizens got arrested during this deportation thingy, but then it turns out that actually did happen... or at least, some of them did 😳. I mean, can't we just know what's really going on? Why all the secrecy? And 40 people, including U.S. citizens, getting zip-tied and held without their lawyers? That's just crazy! 🤯

And what about this Supreme Court decision that's got everyone scared of immigration stops based on how they look or where they work? It sounds like a total nightmare! 🌃 I don't get why Noem wouldn't want to be more transparent about all this. Is she trying to hide something? And what's up with the Department of Homeland Security not commenting on any of this? Are they just not answering the senator's questions because they're hiding something? 🤐

I don't think it's fair that we can't know what's really going on here, especially when American citizens are getting caught in the middle. We need more answers, like, now! 💬

OMG 🙄, this is seriously messed up! I mean, who gets caught up in some immigration raid thinking they're U.S. citizens? It's like, come on Kristi, get your facts straight! 🤦‍♂️ 40 people, zip-tied and held for days without lawyers? That's just plain wrong 🚫. And what about all those Black and Brown Americans fearing immigration stops based on their skin color or job? Unfair, unfair, unfair 😡. We need more transparency from our government, like Senator Durbin is demanding. I hope we get some answers soon! 💻

omg i cant even imagine being stopped by immigration agents while just walking home from school 🤯😱 like what if u r american citizen but still detained?? its so unfair & noem is really bad at her job 🙄💔 at least 40 ppl caught in illinois during late aug & early nov? thats crazy! i wish durbin gets those records ASAP so we know whats really going on 🤓🕵️‍♀️

I'm so confused about these immigration raids... like, what even is the point? 🤷‍♀️ I know some people might get upset if they're from certain countries or have accents, but shouldn't we just be helping each other out? I mean, my cousin's friend is from Mexico and she's always telling me how amazing it is there... 🌯️ But anyway, back to this stuff... isn't Homeland Security supposed to protect us? Like, what happened to all the safety measures? 🤔

Just got my hands on that scathing letter from Senator Durbin to Kristi Noem 📨😬 and I gotta say, it's super concerning! The fact that at least 40 American citizens were arrested in Illinois during those immigration raids is just outrageous 🤯. And the stories of wrongful detention, like that retired caterer and Air Force veteran who got zip-tied? Unbelievable 😲.

I mean, can't we just have a fair and humane system for enforcing immigration laws without putting innocent lives at risk? ✈️ It's not rocket science! The fact that federal judges are still struggling to rein in the chaos is just a sign of how broken our immigration system is 🤦‍♂️.

Durbin's right to demand more transparency and accountability from Noem and Homeland Security. I'm keeping an eye on this one, hoping for some real change soon 💪

omg, 40 americans caught in the raid & held without access to lawyers? that's just insane 🤯♂️ what's going on with trump admin? they're just making it up as they go along... noem is being super shady about this too 👀 i mean, why would she deny all american citizens were caught when there are reports from the chicago sun-times saying otherwise? it's not even a good cover story 🙄

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... I mean, come on! Operation Midway Blitz sounds like something straight out of a horror movie 🤯. Noem claims no American citizens were caught, but Durbin's got proof that at least 40 were arrested in Illinois alone 😱. And those reports from the Chicago Sun-Times are not just whispers – they're concrete evidence.

It's absolutely appalling that these US citizens were held without access to lawyers for days on end 🚔. I mean, what even is the point of having a Supreme Court if we can't trust our own immigration system? This whole thing reeks of racism and xenophobia 😕. I'm all for proper checks and balances, but come on – we're supposed to be a country that values its citizens' rights 🤷‍♀️.

The fact that Durbin's requesting records from Noem is like the bare minimum 📝. We need real change here, not just empty promises. And what's with the 'gut' offices responsible for overseeing ICE officers? Like, are we really that scared of accountability? 🔒

I don't get why this is still happening 🤯, like, we're already in 2025 and the US gov's got some serious issues with their immigration policies 🚫... I mean, can't they just chill? 😌 ...anyway, I'm all about fairness and transparency, so it's cool that Sen Durbin's speaking up about this. 🙌 He's right to question Noem's claims, especially when we got reports from a legit newspaper like the Chicago Sun-Times 📰... these 40+ American citizens who got caught in the raids without knowing their rights? That's wild 🤯 and totally unacceptable 🚫... I just hope the gov gets some pressure to do better 👊

🤔 I'm shocked by Durbin's letter, can't believe Noem made those claims about American citizens being left out. 40+ arrested in Illinois? That's crazy! 🚨 Zip-tied and held for days without lawyers? Unacceptable. The SC decision on racial profiling is a huge concern too... it's time to hold DHS accountable for their actions. Why do they need Congressional oversight, like Noem's trying to gut the offices that regulate ICE? It's not like they're hiding something... or are they? 🤷‍♂️
