Three teams, Lockport, Lyons, and Palatine, are looking to rise up the ranks this season as sleeper contenders in Illinois high school basketball.
Lockport's potent junior trio of Nathan Munson, Nedas Venckus, and Nojus Venckus will lead the charge, backed by a host of 6-4 seniors filling key roles under coach Dave Wilson. The Porters' strong summer performance made them an early sleeper to watch this winter.
Lyons is poised for a resurgence after a couple of subpar seasons, with talented guard Owen Carroll and juniors Timmy Sloan and Grant Smith leading the way. Coach Tom Sloan's team should easily surpass last year's win total and push into the Super 25 rankings at some point this season.
Palatine, meanwhile, is seeking to build on its magical run from a year ago, when it finished fourth in Class 4A under coach Eric Millstone. With five of their top seven players returning, including Illinois football recruit Tony Balanganayi and three-year starting guard Darrin Dick, the Pirates have all the ingredients to make another deep playoff push.
These teams will be worth keeping an eye on as they look to shake up the Illinois high school basketball landscape this season.
