Sex, lies and pistachio shells: the disturbing dream worlds of artist Joseph Yaeger

Joseph Yaeger's latest exhibition, 'Polygrapher', is a deeply personal and confessional work that delves into the darker corners of the human experience. The show, which marks the artist's first solo exhibition with prestigious London gallery Modern Art, is a sprawling exploration of guilt, shame, and the search for truth.

At its core, 'Polygrapher' is an investigation into the nature of honesty and deception. Yaeger has taken the concept of polygraph testing – a lie detector that measures physiological responses to detect deception – and turned it on himself. The exhibition features a transcript of a fictional polygraph test, in which the artist's answers are presented as a fragmented and often disturbing narrative.

The paintings themselves are like fragments of raw memory, with faces and bodies twisted into impossible contortions. They seem to hold their breaths, frozen in a perpetual state of anxiety. But beneath the surface, Yaeger has left a trail of scars – literally, in the case of his watercolour paintings on gesso canvas, which reveal the layers of paint that have been stripped away.

For Yaeger, art is both a form of confession and a way of dealing with his own anxieties. He works tirelessly ahead of schedule, driven by a sense of unease that only he can articulate. And it's this sense of discomfort that gives 'Polygrapher' its dark intensity – an unflinching examination of the human psyche that is both mesmerizing and terrifying.

In many ways, Yaeger's Catholic upbringing has influenced his work – Clean Windows Kill Birds, in which a woman's face is seen through the screen of a confessional booth, is one of many overtly Catholic paintings he has made. But even this is subverted by the artist's use of watercolour and gesso, which creates a sense of disconnection between the sacred and the profane.

Ultimately, 'Polygrapher' is an exhibition about the search for truth – not in the classical sense, but in the sense that it's a constant and ongoing process. Yaeger's paintings are like fragments of a dream world – disturbing, unsettling, and yet fascinatingly compelling. They invite us to peer into their depths, to confront our own fears and anxieties head-on.

'Polygrapher' is on at Modern Art, 8 Bennet Street, London, from November 15 to January 17.

omg u gotta check out joseph yaeger's new exhibition 'polygrapher' at modern art in london 🤯 it's like a dark mirror held up to humanity, you know? he's investigating the nature of honesty and deception, and how we all try to hide our true selves behind masks. his paintings are so visceral, like they're gonna jump off the wall and grab u by the throat 😲 but at the same time, they're super introspective, like he's trying to unravel this thread of guilt and shame that's just too hard to pull loose.

and omg, have u seen the watercolour pieces on gesso canvas? it's like he's literally stripped away his own layers of truth 🌊 and left these raw, exposed nerves just hanging out there. i mean, yaeger's got this whole confessional vibe going on with some of his other work, but here he's pushing himself to the edge. 'polygrapher' is like an exercise in vulnerability, and honestly, it's kinda beautiful?

I'M REALLY IMPRESSED WITH JOSEPH YAEGERS NEW EXHIBITION "POLYGRAPHER"!!! IT'S LIKE HE'S PUTTING HIS OWN PSYCHE ON DISPLAY FOR US TO SEE AND IT'S BOTH TERRIFYING AND FASCINATING AT THE SAME TIME. I MEAN, WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO EXPLOR E THEIR OWN ANXIETY & SHAME THROUGH ART?! THE WAY HE'S USED POLYGRAPH TESTING AS A CONCEPT IS GENIUS. THE PAINTINGS THEMSELVES ARE LIKE RAW EMOTIONS ON CANVAS, YOU CAN FEEL THE ANXIETY AND TENSION PULSING THROUGH EVERY BRUSHSTROKE. IT'S LIKE HE'S BEEN HONEST WITH US ABOUT HIS OWN INSECURITIES & IT'S MADE FOR A REALLY POWERFUL EXPERIENCE. I'M SO GLAD I GET TO SEE THIS EXHIBITION IN LONDON NEXT MONTH!!! 🎨💥

OMG I'm soooo down for this new exhibition... 🤯 it sounds like super intense & emotional stuff, i'm not even kidding about how much i'm intrigued by the whole polygraph thing... 📝 Yaeger's artwork is literally like windows into his soul or something, so raw and honest that it's hard to look away... 👀

I'm low-key obsessed with Joseph Yaeger's latest exhibition 'Polygrapher' 🤯 it's like he's tap-ping into this deep well of anxiety and guilt that we all try to hide from. The paintings are so hauntingly beautiful, they're like fragments of your own nightmares 😱 but in a good way? I mean, who else could make watercolour look so... raw and emotional? 💧 His use of polygraph testing as a metaphor for the search for truth is genius, it's like he's holding up this mirror to our own insecurities. I'm definitely gonna have to plan a visit to Modern Art ASAP ⏰

I'm totally fascinated by Joseph Yaeger's latest exhibition "Polygrapher" 🤯 it's like he's taken a scalpel to his own psyche and laid all his darkest thoughts and fears on display for the world to see. The way he uses polygraph testing as a metaphor for honesty and deception is pure genius - it's like he's putting his own credibility under scrutiny, and I love how that makes for some seriously unsettling art 🎨

I'm also loving the use of raw emotion in his paintings, like they're straight out of a fever dream. The way the faces are twisted into impossible contortions is just haunting - it's like he's captured this sense of perpetual anxiety on canvas and frozen it in time 🔥

For me, what really stands out about "Polygrapher" is how it feels both deeply personal and totally universal at the same time. Yaeger's working from a place of vulnerability, but also tapping into something that we all can relate to - the search for truth and meaning in this crazy world 🌎

man, joseph yaeger's latest exhibit 'polygrapher' is giving me all the feels 🤯... i mean, the way he explores guilt, shame & the search for truth in his art is super deep, like, it's like he's peeling back layers of himself and sharing them with us. the paintings are so intense, they're like fragments of a nightmare, but in a good way? 😂... i love how he uses polygraph testing as a metaphor for honesty & deception, it's like he's holding up a mirror to our own psyche. and the use of watercolour & gesso is genius, it adds this whole other level of vulnerability to the pieces. anyway, if you haven't checked it out yet, you gotta see it, trust me 🤩...

Wow 🤯 The way Yaeger combines polygraph testing with his personal experiences is so deep, it's like he's holding a mirror to the human psyche. Those twisted faces in the paintings are giving me chills 😱. I love how he's using art as a form of confession and therapy, it's like he's sharing his darkest thoughts with us. The way he strips away layers of paint is like revealing his own scars, it's so raw and honest 💔.

🤔 I'm like, totally fascinated by this exhibition 'Polygrapher'. It's so deep and personal, ya know? The way Joseph Yaeger explores the human experience, especially guilt and shame... it's like he's holding up a mirror to our souls or something 🌪️. And those paintings! They're like, fragmented memories or something, all twisted and anxious 😩. I love how he uses watercolour and gesso to create these layers of pain and struggle. It's like, you can almost feel the weight of his emotions pouring out onto the canvas 💔. For me, it's an exhibition about finding truth, not just in a literal sense, but also in how we cope with our own fears and anxieties 🤯. It's like, really scary to look into ourselves, but also kinda necessary? 🤷‍♂️

I don’t usually comment but I had a really weird feeling about this exhibition... 🤔 Like it's not just an art show, you know? It's like the artist is literally digging into his own soul and pulling out all these dark emotions. The way he's using polygraph testing as a metaphor for truth is wild, but also kinda relatable. I mean, who hasn't felt like they're being pulled apart by their own anxiety and guilt at some point? 🤕 It's like the show is saying that honesty and deception are two sides of the same coin, and we're all just trying to navigate this messy human experience.

And honestly, the way he's using watercolour and gesso is super unsettling... it feels like he's literally scraping away at his own psyche. I don't know if that's art or some kind of performance art thing, but either way, it's definitely making me think. 👀

🎨 I'm low-key obsessed with Joseph Yaeger's new exhibition "Polygrapher" 🤯 it's like he's invading our minds and making us confront all the dark corners we try to hide 🤫 his use of polygraph testing as a metaphor for honesty and deception is so genius 🔍 I mean, who hasn't felt like they're being tested by their own guilt or shame? 😳 the way he uses watercolour and gesso to create these twisted, fragmented faces... it's like they're screaming on the inside 🤯 and yet, at the same time, you can't look away 💀 this exhibition is like a wild ride of emotions - it's both mesmerizing and terrifying 🎠

ya know i'm kinda fascinated by how yaeger's using polygraph testing as a metaphor for honesty & deception... it's like he's putting his own emotional state under a microscope 🔍 and we get to see all the messy stuff that comes out of it. at the same time, i think what's really interesting is how he subverts the idea of catharsis - instead of using art as a way to purge his emotions, he's kinda embracing them, letting them fester on the surface... it's like he's saying 'hey, this is who i am, warts & all' 💕 and that takes a lot of courage.

I'm low-key freaking out over Joseph Yaeger's new exhibition 🤯. Like, I get it, the whole polygraph thing is a metaphor for searching for truth and all that jazz 🤔, but his art is literally giving me the heebie-jeebies 😱. Those twisted faces in his paintings are like they're screaming at me to confront my own demons 👻. And can we talk about how unsettling it is to see his "scars" on canvas? Like, I get that it's supposed to be some deep exploration of human psychology, but I'm just over here like "girl, your emotions are messy and I'm here for it 💁‍♀️". Anyway, if you're a fan of art that'll make you feel all the feels, then 'Polygrapher' is def worth checking out 🎨.

I'm low-key fascinated by how Yaeger's using polygraph tests as a metaphor for his own inner turmoil. It's like he's literally peeling back the layers of himself to show us what's really going on underneath 🤯. The way the paintings are all fragmented and twisted, it's like they're trying to escape or something... but at the same time, I'm drawn in by their intensity and honesty. It's like he's tapping into this deep well of human anxiety that we all can relate to, you know? And the use of watercolour is genius – it adds this sense of fragility and vulnerability to the whole thing. Overall, I think 'Polygrapher' is a masterclass in exploring the complexities of the human psyche...

I don't know how much I can relate to art, but this one... it's like Joseph Yaeger is trying to unravel the threads of his own mind 🤯. His paintings are so raw and emotional, it's like looking into a mirror that's not your own. Reminds me of those old David Lynch films where you're left wondering what's real and what's just some weird fantasy 😳.

I mean, who needs polygraph tests when you've got art to probe the depths of humanity? Yaeger's exploration of guilt and shame is like a never-ending loop of old-school therapy sessions 🕰️. It's intense, but it's also... cathartic? Like, I'm not saying I'd want to go through all this stuff myself, but at least someone's exploring it, right?

You know what's even crazier? He works tirelessly ahead of schedule, driven by a sense of unease that only he can articulate. That's like me trying to meet my own deadlines for work – minus the existential dread 😅.

OMG 🤯, just saw the most mind-blowing art exhibition - 'Polygrapher' by Joseph Yaeger 🎨👀! His use of polygraph testing as a metaphor for honesty and deception is soooo deep 💡! The paintings are like, totally disturbing 😱, but in a good way? Like, they're revealing this raw emotion that's hard to look away from. The artist's process is also super fascinating - he works like crazy ahead of schedule 🕒️, driven by his own anxiety. And the use of watercolour and gesso on canvas adds this extra layer of depth 💦🎨! I'm totally hooked now 🤔, can't wait to see it for myself! 💖

I'm intrigued by Joseph Yaeger's latest exhibition 'Polygrapher'. I mean, who wouldn't want to explore the darker corners of human experience through art? 🤯 The way he uses polygraph testing as a metaphor for honesty and deception is genius. It's like he's taking these psychological tests and turning them on himself, and it's both fascinating and unsettling to see.

I love how his paintings are like fragments of raw memory, all twisted up in anxiety. And the fact that he strips away layers of paint to reveal the scars beneath? That's some next-level emotional expression right there 🖌️. I think what really stands out about this exhibition is how it feels both deeply personal and universally relatable.

As someone who's always on the lookout for new art, I'm excited to see what Yaeger comes up with next. And if you're anything like me, you'll want to get yourself down to Modern Art to check out 'Polygrapher' for yourself 🎨

I'm so over this whole guilt/shame vibe already 🤯 Yaeger's work feels like he's reliving the worst of his anxiety for all of us to witness... I mean, I get it, art is supposed to be a form of catharsis and all that jazz 💔 But can't we just have some beauty and light in our lives instead? The way he's stripped away layers of paint on the canvas is like a metaphor for his inner turmoil - it's all so... heavy 🤕
