Shoojit Sircar, Vikramaditya Motwane Board Varun Tandon’s Award-Winning ‘Thursday Special’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Acclaimed Indian filmmakers Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane have teamed up to present an award-winning short film titled "Thursday Special" by Varun Tandon, which has garnered significant recognition on the international festival circuit.

The intimate drama explores themes of love, companionship, and the passage of time, recently claiming the Most Poetic Film Award at Serbia's Küstendorf Film Festival 2025, a distinction personally selected by renowned director Emir Kusturica.

Starring Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama as an elderly married couple whose relationship is anchored by their mutual passion for food and a weekly Thursday tradition, the film offers a nuanced portrayal of companionship, ageing, and love.

Director Sircar praised the film's understated approach, drawing comparisons to his own unreleased feature "Shoe Bite," which starred Amitabh Bachchan. He described Varun's portrayal as heartfelt and mature.

Motwane highlighted the film's focus on overlooked narratives, noting that there are many stories waiting to be told in the mundane lives of ordinary people.

For Tandon, the project represents a long-cherished creative vision, a story that has stayed with him for years. He expressed his excitement to see these characters on screen and watch their lives unfold.

Since its premiere at Mecal Pro in Barcelona, "Thursday Special" has amassed over 25 awards across global festivals, including notable wins such as Best Narrative Short at the New York Indian Film Festival and Best International Short Film at the Adelaide Independent Film Festival.

The film is set to be released on Jan. 29 via the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel.

I love how these filmmakers came together to create something so beautiful 🍴🎬! The way they explored the theme of companionship and aging in "Thursday Special" really resonates with me.

The intimate story of Anubha and Ramakanth's relationship is so well-crafted. I'm excited to watch the film on Jan. 29 📺! The awards it's already won are a testament to Varun Tandon's talent 🏆

just saw this short film "Thursday Special" and it's so beautifully simple... reminds me of those old european art movies where you can tell everything without saying much 🎥👍. love how it focuses on an elderly couple and their relationship, it's like you're sitting in the kitchen with them, having a cuppa and watching them chop veggies together 🍲😊. think it's great that these directors are giving us stories we don't usually see on screen, like the lives of ordinary people and all the quiet moments in between ❤️👫. can't wait to watch it on youtube on jan 29! 👀

🤔 I mean, it's nice that these filmmakers are getting recognized for their work, but have you noticed how the 'poetic' part in "Most Poetic Film Award" is kinda just a marketing buzzword? Like, what does it even mean? It sounds fancy, but is it really saying anything meaningful about the film itself? I'm not saying the film isn't well-made or anythin', but let's keep an eye on these kinds of awards and see if they're actually contributing to a more nuanced understanding of cinema or just lookin' good on paper 📚👀

Ugh, another film fest winner 🙄... I mean, congrats to Varun Tandon and his team for making "Thursday Special" a hit! 🎥 But can we talk about the lack of innovation in short films lately? They're all just variations of the same intimate drama themes. Can't we see some more experimental stuff on the festival circuit? 🤔

And don't even get me started on the awards 🏆... 25 wins is a lot, I guess, but it feels like they're just stacking up to prove their film's worth rather than because of its actual quality 💁‍♀️. Like, what does it really say about the judges' tastes?

I'm not saying "Thursday Special" isn't well-made or anything 🙃... Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane do know their stuff, after all! But let's keep things in perspective here 😊.

I mean, I'm not one for overly sentimental films, but "Thursday Special" actually surprised me 🤔. The way they captured that quiet intimacy between two people who've been together for so long... it's pretty beautiful 😊. I liked how it highlighted the little things in life that keep a relationship strong – food being their thing in this case 👌. What really stood out to me was how grounded and realistic it felt, no fancy dramatics or anything like that 🙅‍♂️. It just told a story that needed to be told, you know? And I think the awards they won are well-deserved 💯.

🎥👏 I think what's really cool about this short film "Thursday Special" is how it explores the little things in life that can bring people together - like a weekly tradition centered around food 🍴. It's so easy to overlook these moments, but Varun Tandon has done an amazing job of capturing their beauty and significance on screen. I love how the directors, Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane, are highlighting the importance of understated storytelling - it's not always about big, flashy plot twists 🤔. And I'm excited to check out the film's release on Jan 29 via YouTube - can't wait to see Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama bring this lovely story to life! 👫

I think its great that these filmmakers are teaming up, Shoojit Sircar & Vikramaditya Motwane have a solid track record with films like Luv Aatript in India. Thursday Special sounds really intimate and nuanced, I love how it explores the little things like food traditions between two people in an elderly relationship 🍴💕. It's awesome that Varun Tandon has had this story on his mind for so long and its finally coming to life, Im curious to see Anubha Fatehpuria & Ramakanth Dayama bring these characters to life 😊

OMG, you guys! I'm literally so hyped for this new short film "Thursday Special"!!! It's like, it's got everything - love, companionship, and that one thing we all know is true: food 🍴👫. Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama are, like, perfect as an elderly married couple who just get each other 💕. The fact that Emir Kusturica personally picked "Most Poetic Film" for this flick is like, a major win 🏆! I'm all about those under-the-radar stories, and Varun Tandon's doing just that - shining a light on the mundane lives of everyday people 🌟. Plus, it's got Amitabh Bachchan involved somehow (no biggie 😉), so you know it's gonna be good! Can't wait to see this one on YouTube on Jan 29th... who else is excited? 😃

Wow 🤩, I'm loving this collab between Shoojit Sircar & Vikramaditya Motwane! Varun Tandon's "Thursday Special" sounds like a real heart-rounder. The fact that it got the Most Poetic Film Award at Küstendorf Film Festival 2025 is amazing 🎥👏, and I love how it highlights the beauty in everyday life. Anubha Fatehpuria & Ramakanth Dayama's performances as an elderly couple are giving me all the feels ❤️. Can't wait to see it on Humans of Cinema YouTube channel on Jan 29! 📆

Ugh 🤦‍♂️ I mean, another award-winning short film that's all about how nice it is to watch old people cook together 😊. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama are great actors, but can't we just have a more realistic take on aging? Like, what if they were just arguing over who ate the last piece of naan 🍞? Give me something with some real conflict. And 25 awards? That's just a bunch of empty calories 🤯. What does it really mean? Can this film even hold up in five years when all the hype dies down? I'm not trying to be harsh, but let's just wait and see how this one holds up 🤔👀

OMG 🤩 I'm so stoked about this collab between Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane! They're bringing some amazing energy to "Thursday Special" 💫. I mean, can you imagine a film that explores love, companionship, and time in such a beautiful way? 🌟 It's like they've managed to capture the essence of life itself. The fact that it won at Küstendorf Film Festival is just icing on the cake 🍰! But what I'm most excited about is how this film showcases the beauty in everyday moments, you know? Like, who doesn't love a good Thursday tradition over food? 😊 It's all about appreciating the little things, and that's something we should all strive for. Can't wait to watch it on Jan 29th! 📺

aww this is so beautiful!! i love how they highlighted the importance of companionship, ageing & love in their film 🤗🎥 varun tandon's story is literally been a part of him for years & it's amazing to see it come to life on screen 💫👏 shoojit sircar & vikramaditya motwane are the best 🙌 can't wait to watch this film on jan 29 🎉

I'm totally against this... I mean, I am super in favor 🤩. But hold up, are they really? This award-winning short film "Thursday Special" seems too perfect, you know? Like it's all polished and stuff. Is that even how real life works? And what's with the praise for its understated approach? Isn't that just code for "this movie is boring"? I'm getting a vibe that these filmmakers are trying to be artsy-fartsy, but deep down they're still just making a film about old people and food... meh. 🤔

OMG, I'm so stoked for Varun Tandon! 🤩 He's finally getting his big break with "Thursday Special" and it's about time! 😂 I mean, who wouldn't want to see a film that's all about foodie couples and exploring the complexities of relationships? 🍴❤️ The fact that it's won so many awards already is a testament to how talented Varun is. And the directors, Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane, are like the ultimate team goals! 👫🎥 I'm literally counting down the days until it drops on YouTube... 29th Jan can't come soon enough 🤗 Can't wait to discuss it with my friends over lunch break!

I just saw this news about "Thursday Special" and I'm like, "Dude, a movie about food and old people being in love? That's my kind of special! Just kidding, it sounds amazing!" 🤣💕 Apparently, director Sircar is like, totally stoked about Varun Tandon's work and thinks it's on par with his other projects... which, btw, are super unreleased so we'll just have to imagine them being awesome 😏. Anyway, more than 25 awards? That's a lot of recognition for a short film! I'm excited to see this one on YouTube on Jan 29 📺👍
