Signal Launches Secure Message Backups on iOS, Letting Users Save Conversations in Case of Loss or Breakage.
In a move aimed at ensuring the security and continuity of its users' conversations, Signal has introduced secure message backups on iOS devices. With this feature, Signal enables users to save their messages, as well as media like photos, videos, GIFs, and files, in case they lose or break their phone. The backup option is available for free, with a limited 100MB capacity, but users can upgrade to a paid plan that includes unlimited storage of media beyond the first 45 days.
The feature relies on end-to-end encryption to safeguard user data, similar to Signal's existing secure messaging service. Users can access their backups using a unique recovery key generated on their device and stored securely.
To activate this feature, users need to navigate to the Settings menu and select Backups. From there, they tap Setup > Enable Backups and write down or store their recovery key before confirming it. This enables Signal to begin storing user messages and media.
The development is part of an ongoing effort by Signal to expand its secure messaging features across various platforms, including Android devices, which received this feature in September last year. The company also plans to roll out secure backups on its desktop app and enable users to transfer their encrypted messaging history between different platforms.
With the introduction of secure message backups, Signal aims to ensure that users' conversations remain safe even if they lose or break their phone, providing an added layer of security for its users.
