Sorry, the "Heated Rivalry" gay Marvel fanfic origin story isn't true

Canadian streamer Crave and HBO Max have unleashed a drama series that has been hailed as the "gay hockey show" - 'Heated Rivalry'. The adaptation of Rachel Reid's books follows the romance between rival hockey players Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, but fans of Reid's novels claim that Scott Hunter and Kip Grady's relationship began in a rather unexpected way: as gay Marvel fanfiction.

The theory suggests that Scott's character was originally inspired by Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Bucky Barnes from the 'Avengers' universe. Fans point to similarities between Chris Evans and François Arnaud, who plays Scott Hunter, and argue that these parallels prove the fanfic origin story is true. However, Reid sets the record straight.

Reid began drafting Scott and Kip's romance in 2016 as a low-stakes way to build her confidence. She shared her novel one chapter at a time on Archive of Our Own, a website where users publish fan fiction, and drew inspiration from 'Stucky' fanfiction, the romantic pairing of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. However, Reid never changed Kip's character to resemble Bucky Barnes, insisting that he was always his own unique person.

Reid took the story off AO3, removed the "Stucky" elements, and submitted her manuscript to publishers. Her publisher even commented on the fanfic influences, saying it made the book sound a bit too familiar. Reid acknowledges that she did everything wrong with 'Game Changer', but is grateful for the experience.

Although Reid wishes she had never posted her fan fiction, she recognizes its role in shaping her writing career. However, she takes responsibility for removing her work from AO3 without properly saying goodbye to her fans, who provided constructive feedback and support her writing journey.

The drama series 'Heated Rivalry' continues to air new episodes on Thursdays on HBO Max.

I'm not buying the fanfic theory about Scott Hunter's character πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, come on, it's just a stretch πŸ€”. Rachel Reid is being super honest about how she got her start writing and that's awesome, but let's not get too carried away with speculation πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. It's cool to see the show doing well though - I've been binge-watching it all week πŸ˜‚. I do wish more creators would talk openly about their influences and mistakes, it makes for a way more interesting story πŸ“š. Anyway, if you haven't checked out 'Heated Rivalry' yet, what are you waiting for? 🀩

omg I love how the creator of the book Rachel Reid is being super humble about where she got inspiration from πŸ™. I mean, it's not like anyone expected her to be a fanfiction writer and then turned into a bestseller lol! The fact that she took risks and shared her work online shows that she's down-to-earth and willing to learn from her mistakes. πŸ’‘ And can we talk about how cool is it that the actors are playing Scott and Kip? FranΓ§ois Arnaud is literally stealing scenes on screen 🀩

🀣 Can you believe the crazy life cycle of a fanfic? From being a low-stakes thing for Rachel Reid's confidence boost to becoming the basis for a whole book and now a drama series... I mean, what's next? Getting its own biopic? 🎬 And honestly, if Scott's character was always meant to be Kip Grady 2.0 then why did they even change him to have more Marvel connections in the first place? It's like they took a few inspiration vibes and ran with it... or is that just how fandom works? πŸ˜‚

Can you believe the drama that surrounds this show? 🀣 Like, a whole series can't be made out of one fanfic theory, right? πŸ˜‚ Anyway, I'm still trying to wrap my head around how Reid's books went from Marvel-inspired to "gay hockey show". Not mad at it though, more curious about what inspired her to write Scott and Kip's story. Did she ever get tired of being associated with a certain Captain America fanfic? πŸ˜‰

I'm so over the 'gay hockey show' hype πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ, it's just another adaptation of someone else's idea. Scott Hunter and Kip Grady's relationship is iconic, but can we please give Rachel Reid her due? She was experimenting with her writing style back in 2016, trying out a low-stakes fanfic approach to build confidence... that led to 'Heated Rivalry' πŸ“š. I mean, the parallels between FranΓ§ois Arnaud and Chris Evans are uncanny, but let's not forget Reid's growth as an author. And what about the hurtful fact that she took her work off AO3 without properly saying goodbye to her fans? ⏰

omg u guys can't even believe the tea being spilled in this drama series "heated rivalry" 🍡 it's all about 2 hockey players, shane & ilya but what's really getting people's attention is that rachel reid's books supposedly started as gay marvel fanfic tho 🀯 specifically with scott hunter (played by francois arnaud) being inspired by steve rogers and bucky barnes πŸ™„ it's crazy because fans are noticing similarities between evans & arnaud and they're low-key freaking out about it 😳 but reid sets the record straight saying she never changed kip's character to resemble bucky and that her novel was always meant to be its own thing πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ what's wild is that reid herself admits everything went wrong when she first started writing it, but at least she learned from her mistakes πŸ’”

I'm low-key surprised Reid was inspired by Marvel fanfic πŸ€”, I mean, who doesn't love a good Captain America/Bucky Barnes ship? But at the same time, it's kinda awesome that she drew inspiration from it and ran with it in her own way. It just goes to show how fandom can spark creativity 🎨. And yeah, Reid acknowledges that removing her work from AO3 was a bit of a mess, but I guess that's just part of the learning process right? The drama series is actually pretty good tho, FranΓ§ois Arnaud's portrayal of Scott Hunter is on point πŸ‘!

I'm telling ya, back in my day we didn't have all these fancy streaming services πŸ“ΊπŸ‘€. But anyway, I was reading about this show 'Heated Rivalry' and it's got me thinking - why do fanfiction theories always have to be so dramatic? πŸ˜‚ Like, can't we just enjoy the story without digging up old fanfic connections? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm also kinda disappointed that Rachel Reid never gave her fans a proper goodbye when she removed the 'Stucky' elements from Archive of Our Own. I get it, she didn't want to be associated with those works anymore, but a little acknowledgement would've been nice πŸ™.

But hey, at least we're talking about this stuff now! The drama series is still going strong on HBO Max, and I'll keep an eye on it πŸ“Ί. Maybe it'll prove me wrong about fanfiction being too dramatic 😜.

I wonder if it's weird that some fans are gonna nitpick the author about where the idea for Scott & Kip came from πŸ€”πŸ“š. Like, yeah, Rachel Reid was inspired by Marvel fanfic, but did we really need to dig up the tea? I mean, I'm down to explore the fandom vibes, but can't we just enjoy the show without getting all worked up over it? I've seen some pretty neat theories about other adaptations being influenced by fanfic too, but like... let's keep it respectful, you know? πŸ’πŸ“Ί

πŸ€” omg I just love seeing how some creators use their own fanfic roots as a way to fuel their stories πŸ“šπŸ’« like rachel reid did with her scott and kip relationship, it's amazing to see how those early 'stucky' vibes influenced the final product πŸ˜‚. but what's wild is that she took the good out of the experience and made it work πŸ’ͺ. and I can totally relate when you're trying to build your confidence as a writer and then sharing your stuff online πŸ“. btw, anyone else watch this drama series 'heated rivalry' yet? 😎

I'm so confused about this whole fanfic thing πŸ€”... I mean, I get that Rachel Reid was inspired by some other writers work and used it as a starting point for her own story, but honestly, it feels like she's trying to own the 'Stucky' fandom without giving enough credit to where it came from πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. And can we talk about how messy all this drama is? I just want to watch a good hockey show and not have to navigate all these complicated fan theories and author intentions πŸ’οΈπŸ˜©

This drama series is sooo good! 🀩 I'm literally hooked on Shane and Ilya's story, but what's wild is how Scott and Kip's relationship came to be... like, who knew it had Marvel roots? πŸ˜‚ Fans are totally convinced that FranΓ§ois Arnaud, the actor playing Scott Hunter, was inspired by Chris Evans (Steve Rogers) and Bucky Barnes from the Avengers universe. I don't blame them for thinking that - he does kinda look similar! πŸ€” But Rachel Reid is keeping it real and saying she just drew inspiration from fanfic, which makes sense now that I think about it... πŸ‘€ The fact that her publisher even commented on how familiar it was because of the fanfic influences is hilarious. It's like, yeah, your writing might be familiar to some fans! πŸ˜‚ Anyway, can't wait for more episodes of Heated Rivalry! πŸ”₯

I'm thinking... the internet can be a wild place! I've seen so many theories about this 'gay hockey show' coming from fanfiction, but it's crazy how much love and dedication fans have for the source material 🀯. At the same time, I feel bad for Rachel Reid - she took all that fan energy to create something new, and now her work is being scrutinized by fans who know more about the 'original' story than she even did herself 😬. It's a wild world out there, but I guess that's what makes it so entertaining, right? πŸ€ͺ

Omg 🀯 I'm loving this gay hockey show πŸ˜πŸ’οΈ! But what's up with the fanfic origins? πŸ€”β€β™‚οΈ Some fans are totally convinced that Scott Hunter was inspired by Steve Rogers πŸ’₯πŸ’–, but Rachel Reid sets the record straight πŸ‘Š. Like, even though her publisher thought it was a bit too familiar πŸ˜…, she took the Stucky vibes out and still managed to make a huge hit πŸ™Œ. I'm not mad about it though, 'cause fanfics can be super inspiring πŸ’«πŸ“, and it's awesome that Reid acknowledges its impact on her writing career πŸ’ͺ. Anyway, I'm hooked on this show now πŸ˜‚πŸ‘€, who else is watching? πŸ‘‰πŸΌ

omg can you believe how complicated it gets when authors talk about their own works lol 1st of all rachel reid should def get some props for being open about her fanfic roots, and i love that she acknowledges mistakes made along the way anyway fans are super creative when they try to connect the dots between fandoms and books... FranΓ§ois Arnaud does look kinda like steve rogers though 🀣πŸŽ₯

man i feel bad for rachel reid πŸ€” she had this amazing fanfic origin story that got ppl all hyped but honestly it's pretty cool how she just rolled with it and made the most of it πŸ‘ even if she took down her original work from archive of our own, which was probably nerve-wracking for fans πŸ™ anyway i'm stoked to see 'Heated Rivalry' come together into a drama series πŸ’₯ & the hockey romance is giving me all the feels ❀️

OMG, I'm so impressed by how quickly the producers could turn a fanfic origin story into a "gay hockey show" 🀣 Meanwhile, poor Rachel Reid is over here like "Hey guys, yeah I kinda borrowed some inspiration from your Marvel faves and I didn't even acknowledge it at first, sorry not sorry?" πŸ˜’ Anyway, I guess it's cool that her writing career got a boost, but can we talk about the fact that she basically ghosted her fans on Archive of Our Own? πŸ€”

I wonder if they should've left some of that fanfic history in there lol πŸ€” it's like they took the good parts and made a whole new show out of it. Reid seems pretty down about her original draft, but I guess you can't blame her for trying to build up her confidence with it. Fans are always gonna be all over this kinda thing though πŸ“šπŸ’» some people just love that stuff and will find ways to connect the dots no matter what πŸ˜‚

I'm still surprised that some people are going on about the connection between Scott's character in "Heated Rivalry" and Steve Rogers from the Avengers universe πŸ€”πŸ’οΈ. Like, I get it, the similarities are pretty obvious, but come on... Scott was always a unique snowflake (or should I say, hockey player? πŸ˜‰) from the start. I remember back in the day when "Twilight" came out and fans were like "OMG, Edward Cullen is soooo Edward Cullen"... same vibes here πŸ™„. Rachel Reid's books are great and all, but let's give it up for her as an author, not just because of some Marvel fanfic inspiration πŸ’–. The show's still good though, even if I do miss the old days when we had to wait for episodes on streaming services 😴
