Special election to fill Mikie Sherrill's U.S. House seat will be held in April

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has announced that a special election to fill the vacant U.S. House seat left by Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill will take place on April 16. This comes after Sherrill's resignation from Congress, which went into effect at midnight Thursday.

The governor ordered the election, which is set to be held just over two months after Sherrill's term was supposed to end in January. The primary election for the special election has already been scheduled for February 5, and candidates must submit their nomination petitions by December 1.

A total of 11 Democratic hopefuls and one Republican candidate have entered the fray, including Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill and former Representative Tom Malinowski. However, some critics argue that Murphy's plan may unfairly favor established politicians and limit voter choice.

National Republicans have criticized the special election timeline as "blatant political corruption" designed to protect Democratic insiders and silence voters. In-person early voting will be available from January 29 through February 3 for the primary, followed by April 6 through April 14 for the general election.

Sherrill, who is set to become New Jersey's governor on January 20 after defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the gubernatorial election earlier this month, will leave behind a vacant seat that needs to be filled before her term ends on January 3, 2027.

🤔 April's gonna be crazy! Special elections are already stressful enough, but doing it just 2 months after the original term is up? That's some quick turnarounds... 👀

I mean, I get that Sherrill had to leave and all, but come on, Governor Murphy, you're a lawyer, not a campaign strategist 🤓. Can't you trust the voters to make their own decisions instead of trying to control the timeline? 🙄 It's like they're trying to outsmart the whole voter base thing... 👎

🤔 The whole thing feels kinda fishy. Why'd they have to do it like 2 months after the original end date? It's like they're trying to get this over with quick, without giving voters a chance to really weigh in 🤷‍♂️. And now there are all these established politicians jumping into the fray... does that even seem fair?

omg i just saw the cutest video of a squirrel trying to open a bird feeder and it was literally the funniest thing i've seen all week 🐿️😂 i mean what's up with those little bushy tails? they're like, so fluffy! anyway back to nj politics... i don't really get why phil murphy is being so hasty about this special election. can't he just let the voters decide when they want to vote? it feels like there's too much pressure on these politicians to make decisions quickly... maybe we should just let them have a nice cup of tea and figure some stuff out 🍵😴

I'm thinkin' that Phil Murphy's decision to order a special election might not be the best idea 🤔. I mean, he's basically makin' it easier for existing politicians to get back in office, which could lead to a bunch of old faces reppin' their districts again. It's like, don't get me wrong, it's good that someone's fillin' the seat and all, but why can't they just let the people decide who they want to represent them? 🤷‍♂️ It feels like Murphy's tryin' to keep things in check, but at the same time he's basically givin' himself some extra control over the process. I don't know, maybe I'm just seein' too much into it 😬.

I also think that this is a big deal for voter turnout 🗳️. If people are only gonna get to vote every few years, they might not even show up in this special election. And with the primary already bein' so close together, it's like, how many people are actually payin' attention? It feels like a lot of people are gonna miss out on this opportunity.

Anyway, I'm sure there'll be some interesting dynamics playin' out in this election 🤯. With 11 Democrats and just one Republican, it's bound to get pretty competitive. We'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out 😊

idk about this special election thingy... it seems like phil murphy is tryin' to fill up the spot ASAP so sherrill can focus on becomin' gov... but some ppl think its gonna hurt voter choice cuz only dem hopefuls are runnin' and not all the lesser-known ones get a chance... 🤔

I'm so over this whole thing... I mean, come on Phil Murphy! You're basically hand-picking who gets to fill Mikie Sherrill's spot just two months shy of the end of her original term. It feels like a total power play and some voters might not even get a say in it 🤔. The Republicans are right to be skeptical - what's up with the super-fast timeline? And now we're gonna have all these candidates throwing their hats into the ring on short notice... it's just gonna be a mess, you know? 💥

omg can't believe they're rushing up the election timeline like wut's going on with murphy and his crew? 🤔 shouldn't he let the people choose instead of just handpicking a winner? 🙄

Ugh, I'm all about balance in formatting, you know? 🤯 For a special election, April 16 is just too early! It's like they're trying to cram as much into the calendar as possible and leave no breathing room for voters. And don't even get me started on the primary election timeline - February 5 already feels rushed. Can't we give the people some space to digest all the info? 💭

idk about this special election thingy... it sounds like politics as usual, right? 🤔 i mean, why do they need to rush into something just 'cause there's an empty seat? can't they just let the people decide at a normal time? and what's up with all these candidates running already? it feels like they're trying to muscle in on some kinda exclusive club... doesn't fair to the average joe who wants a say in this either 🤷‍♂️

Man I'm low-key bummed about this whole thing 🤕. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's great that we've got more people running for office and all that jazz 🎉, but at the same time... it just feels like another example of how politics is all about playing the game 📊. Like, shouldn't we be focusing on actual issues rather than just trying to fill a seat with whoever our leaders want us to? 🤔

And yeah, I get what National Republicans are saying - it does kinda feel like they're trying to protect their own people and limit voter choice 👀. But at the same time... shouldn't we be trying to find ways to make voting more accessible and inclusive for everyone? 🗳️

I guess what's bugging me is that I just feel like this whole thing is a symptom of a bigger problem - how politics in our country can sometimes feel really... manufactured 📺. But hey, maybe I'm just being too cynical 😒. We'll see how it all plays out on April 16!

I was just watching this crazy vid of a cat playing piano 🐈🎹 and I started thinking... have you guys noticed how some animals can do way more complex things than humans? Like, cats can play piano but we're still struggling to figure out how to make the perfect cup of coffee ☕️. And I'm like, what's up with that? We can send robots to Mars but we still can't even get our own coffee right 😂. Just something to think about...

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda weird that they’re having an election so soon after Mikie Sherrill resigned... like, isn’t the point of resigning to make way for someone else? 🤔 And now there's all these candidates jumping in and stuff. It feels like a lot of people are trying to fill a seat just because it needs to be filled, not necessarily because they're the best person for the job. I don’t know if this is gonna lead to some good change or just more of the same old politics... 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure about this whole special election thing 🤔. I get why Gov Murphy is trying to fill the spot ASAP, but I do think it's a bit suspicious that he's rushing it like this 💸. I mean, what if there are some decent, new faces in the running and they can actually bring some fresh ideas to the table? But at the same time, some of these 11 Democratic hopefuls seem pretty established... don't get me wrong, they're probably great people and all, but shouldn't we be giving some newer voices a chance too? 🤷‍♂️
