Special election to fill Mikie Sherrill's U.S. House seat will be held in April

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has announced that a special election to fill the vacant U.S. House seat left by Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill will take place on April 16.

The election comes after Sherrill's resignation from Congress went into effect, and Murphy has directed that a special primary election be held on February 5. The deadline for primary candidates to file nominating petitions is December 1 at 4 pm.

A crowded field of candidates is already vying for the seat, including at least 10 Democrats and one Republican. The race includes Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, former Rep. Tom Malinowski, and Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, among others.

The winner of the special election will fill out the remainder of Sherrill's current term, which ends January 3, 2027. The 11th Congressional District includes parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties.

Early voting for both the primary and general elections is set to begin on January 29 through February 3 for the primary, and April 6 through April 14 for the general election.

Murphy's special election timeline has been criticized by Republicans, with National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Maureen O'Toole accusing him of trying to "protect Democratic insiders" and "silence voters." The deadline set by Murphy, which falls after the Thanksgiving holiday, is seen as a challenge to access for potential candidates outside of the political machine.

Sherrill, who won her gubernatorial campaign earlier this month with a 14-point margin over Republican Jack Ciattarelli, will become New Jersey's 57th governor on January 20.

I mean think about it - we're living in an era where our democratic processes are being scrutinized like never before πŸ€”. The fact that a special election is being held for a vacant seat raises questions about the nature of representation and how it's supposed to work. Is it fair to say that the system is so broken that we need emergency measures to fill in the gaps? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ On one hand, having more people involved in the process might be a good thing - but on the other hand, you've got to wonder if these candidates are really representing the interests of the constituents they're supposed to serve. And what about access? The deadline set by Murphy does seem like a challenge for outsiders trying to get into the game... it's almost as if the system is designed to favor those who already know how to play 🀯

Man, it's crazy how politics is always evolving, you know? 🀯 Like, I'm all for change and stuff, but at the same time, it feels like we're just going through this never-ending cycle of who's in and who's out. I mean, Rep. Sherrill was just elected to be governor and now she's jumping ship to Congress? What's up with that? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And can we talk about the timing of these elections for a sec? Like, December 1st is basically right after Black Friday, which is already stressful enough. You gotta file all these petitions and whatnot? It feels like Murphy is trying to make it as hard as possible for candidates who aren't part of the "inner circle". πŸ™„

I guess what I'm saying is, elections are important, but sometimes they feel like a big mess. Like, how can we truly represent our communities when we're all just trying to navigate these crazy rules and timelines? It's like, can't we just take a deep breath and enjoy the ride for once? πŸ˜‚

I'm thinking that the timing of the special election in April is kinda weird πŸ€”. I mean, it's right after Sherrill's resignation and before her actual term ends, but it feels like they're rushing into this. Maybe they want to avoid a crowded primary? But on the other hand, early voting starts in January so people will still have some time to get informed... πŸ“…

πŸ€” This whole thing got me thinking... what's the hurry to fill that seat? I mean, we gotta make sure whoever gets in is gonna represent our voices, you know? πŸ—£οΈ But at the same time, holding off a special election till April feels kinda like putting on the brakes. Maybe it's a good opportunity for people who wanna get involved in politics to step up and give it a shot? πŸ’ͺ It's not about protecting insiders or silencing voters... it's about giving everyone a fair chance to make their voice heard! πŸ—½οΈ

Just read that NJ Gov Phil Murphy is setting the deadline for primary candidates to file for the vacant Congressional seat, and I'm thinking it's gonna be tough for people outside of the party machine to get involved. The early voting periods are set pretty close together, too...I don't wanna see any good candidates getting shut out by a tight schedule πŸ•’οΈ

I dont think its fair that Republicans are criticizing Gov Murphy for setting the special election deadline. I mean, they always want more time to campaign and strategize, right? πŸ€” But what about people who want to run but need a bit of time to get their stuff together? It feels like they're being forced out by the clock πŸ•°οΈ. And on the other hand, early voting can be super helpful for people who have busy schedules or live far from the polling stations. Can't we just find a happy medium here? Maybe Feb 5 is a bit too soon, but April 16 might be too late... what's a reasonable date in between? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” I'm telling you, something fishy is going on here... like, have you noticed how quickly Phil Murphy is pushing for this special election? It's like he wants to get a certain candidate in office before the primary even starts 🚨. And what about all these candidates showing up out of nowhere? It's almost like they're getting some kind of backing from the governor himself πŸ’Έ. And don't even get me started on the early voting dates - it's like he's trying to limit who can actually cast their ballot in this thing πŸ—³οΈ. I'm not saying there's anything wrong, but something doesn't add up...

I'm low-key worried about this special election in NJ πŸ€”. The timing just seems so early and it feels like Murphy is trying to fast-track his own party's choice without giving the people a chance to really get involved. I mean, December 1 is pretty tight for candidates to file petitions - what if they're not ready or can't afford to take on that much stress? And on top of that, the Republican Party is already throwing shade at Murphy's scheduling, saying he's trying to silence voters πŸ—³οΈ. Can we talk about how this affects the democratic process in our country?

idk why murphy has to rush things so much lol, can't he just chill for one sec? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ he's gonna make it super hard for new ppl to get into the race... that's not good for democracy at all πŸ€” and btw, who's to say democrats are trying to "silence voters"?? sounds like murphy is just doing his job πŸ™ƒ and what's with this weird timeline? jan 29 thru feb 3 for primary voting? isn't it supposed to be jan 1-6 or smthn? 🀯

I'm so confused about this special election timeline 🀯. Like, can't they just give candidates more time to figure out if they wanna run? The deadline is literally after Thanksgiving, which is already super busy for most people... what if someone wants to take a break from politics or has family obligations? It seems like Governor Murphy's timeline is gonna be tough on folks who aren't part of the "machine". πŸ€” And now I'm wondering, will this election just be a bunch of politicians talking about themselves? πŸ˜’

Ugh, great, just what we need more politicians trying to be elected in the middle of winter... like, who thought it was a good idea to hold an election when everyone's too busy being all cozy and stuff? And can we talk about how early voting is already starting on January 29th? That's, like, weeks before most people even get their taxes done πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. And, of course, there are already 10+ Democrats vying for the seat... I mean, who wouldn't want to run for Congress when you can spend your time making laws instead of, say, paying off student loans? πŸ™„ Anyway, it's gonna be a real thrill-ride on April 16th, folks!

Ugh πŸ™„, can't believe they're rushing into another election already 🀯. I mean, what's the hurry? Can't we just take our time to think about who we want to represent us for a bit longer? These special elections are always a mess, with everyone trying to jump on the bandwagon and it feels like no one really knows what they're doing.

And don't even get me started on early voting πŸ™ƒ. What's wrong with just going to the polls on election day? Is that really too much to ask? It feels like we're just getting more and more complicated with technology, but are we really making our lives better or just making it harder for people to participate?

I'm all for democracy, but can't we just slow down and think about what's best for the country instead of just following the latest trend? πŸ€”

OMG, I'm like totally confused about this whole thing 🀯! So the governor is trying to rush through an election for that vacant seat in Congress, but honestly, it feels like he's trying to limit who can even run for it ⏰. I get that Democrats want to move forward with their plans, but shouldn't we have more time to figure out who's actually good for the job? And what's up with Republicans not liking the timeline? It just seems like a typical power play 🀝. Anyways, early voting is coming soon so fingers crossed people can make their voices heard! πŸ’¬

I just saw that news about NJ and I'm like totally surprised they're having another election so soon 🀯 Like what even is the rush? Can't we take a breather for a sec after Sherrill resigns already? And 10+ Democrats running already? That's some crazy stuff. Guess it just goes to show you that in politics, there's always room for more drama πŸ€”

omg what's up with the timeline lol πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ April 16 for the special election? that's like, super close to the general election dates they should give ppl more notice about this... also i'm kinda surprised there are already 10 dems running but where's the rest of the country's representation? why is it all dems only? πŸ€”

πŸ€” so like I don't get why Murphy is making it hard for new people to run in the election πŸ™„ he's saying this deadline thingy has to be met by Dec 1st which might make some candidates think twice about throwing their hat into the ring πŸ’Έ i mean, can't we have a little more time to figure out who's gonna fill that seat πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and also, shouldn't it be a bit easier for new people to get involved in politics rather than having all these barriers 🚧

πŸ€” you know what's wild? i was just watching this funny video of a cat trying to "help" its owner cook dinner 🍳😹 and now i'm thinking about how cats are basically the original couch surfers - they just show up, demand food and snuggles, and suddenly they're experts on everything πŸ’β€β™€οΈπŸˆ and yeah, can't even get worked up over a Congressional election when there's cat video gold to watch πŸŒŸπŸ˜‚

so there's an election comin' up in NJ and it's gonna be pretty interesting πŸ€”. they got like 10+ dems runnin' already and 1 rep trying to take the seat lol. phil murphy is all about gettin' this done ASAP, but republicans are sayin he's tryin' to silence voters by setin' a tight deadline for candidates to file πŸ•’οΈ. gotta wonder if that's gonna be a problem for some of 'em. also, sherrill is movin' on to be governor 😎 and it's gonna be crazy to see her in office. early votin starts soon so we'll see who's gettin' the job done πŸ’ͺ

I don't get why they're making a big deal about the special election timeline... isn't it just to make sure everything runs smoothly? I mean, I guess if you're one of those people who wants to run for office, you gotta file your papers by December 1st. But can't we just take our time and not rush into things? πŸ€” And what's up with all these candidates already throwing their hats in the ring? It seems like a lot of drama... I just want someone to represent me in Congress who actually cares about the people, not just some big party machine πŸ’Έ.
