Strauss, Dvořák and Glazunov album review – packs a dramatic punch

A riveting new release from the Leipzig-based Accentus label brings together three 19th-century masterpieces by Strauss, Dvořák, and Glazunov, each grappling with the notion of a hero in its own way. Maestro Jakub Hrůša's nine-year tenure as chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony has yielded exceptional results, including this absorbing album.

At its core lies Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben, an orchestral showstopper that effortlessly weaves together music hall charm and bombastic grandeur. Though it begins at a slightly leisurely pace, Hrůša expertly tempers the opulence of Strauss's composition, allowing its dramatic intensity to shine through in all its glory. This is perhaps most striking in the poignant portraits of the composer's wife and his own heroic persona, where every phrase feels calculated to evoke a response.

Meanwhile, Glazunov's lesser-known symphonic elegy To the Memory of a Hero emerges as a compelling discovery on this album. Composed when just 20 years old, it showcases an unwavering sense of sombre purpose and instantly memorable melodies that linger long after the music fades away. The Bamberg Symphony brings Glazunov's elegy to life with handsomely shaped performances, anchored by Hrůša's sensitive guidance.

Dvořák's A Hero's Song rounds out this dramatic trio, a micro-symphony of triumph and tribulation that finds its own unique voice within the constraints of its 20-minute duration. Here too, Hrůša delivers an authoritative reading, imbuing Dvořák's work with an amiable yet unyielding energy that yields the desired emotional punch.

Throughout these three pieces, there are reminders that, nine years ago, Hrůša took up his baton as chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony, a role he has navigated with distinction in orchestral music. And now, the listener is rewarded for their patience with this absorbing release – an exceptional performance from all involved.

I'm so over the whole 'hero' trope in classical music 🙄. It's like, yeah we get it, you wrote a symphony about a hero and it's great and stuff... can't we just have some actual human flaws for once? 😂 Dvořák's symphonic elegy is giving me all the feels tho, that sombre purpose vibe is on point 💔.

omg I'm totally obsessed w/ this new album on Accentus label 🎶!! Jakub Hrůša's got skills, no doubt! 💯 Ein Heldenleben is like a masterclass in orchestral showmanship - he knows just when to dial up the drama & when to keep it subtle 🙌. And Glazunov's To the Memory of a Hero? game-changer! 😍 that elegy is hauntingly beautiful & memorable 💔. Dvořák's A Hero's Song is also super compelling - I love how Hrůša brings out the emotional depth in that short but impactful piece 🎵. overall, this release is a total winner & I'm gonna listen to it on repeat 👍

🙌 I mean seriously though, have you listened to this new album from the Bamberg Symphony? Maestro Hrůša really brings out the best in these classic pieces... Strauss's Ein Heldenleben is like a rollercoaster ride of emotions - one minute it's all fancy and then BAM! You're right there feeling like you're living the composer's life 🤯. And Glazunov's To the Memory of a Hero? Like, I didn't know that was even a thing but now I'm obsessed with it... those melodies just stick in your head forever 💔. And Dvořák's A Hero's Song is like a symphonic anthem - Hrůša really knows how to get the most out of his orchestra 🎵. Seriously though, if you haven't listened to this album yet, what are you even doing with your life? 😂

I'm loving this new album on Accentus label 🎵! It's so fascinating how Strauss, Dvořák, and Glazunov each explore what it means to be a hero, but in such different ways. For me, that's really reflective of our own lives – we all have our own heroic struggles, right? And the way Hrůša brings out the emotional depth in these pieces is just incredible... I mean, have you ever stopped to think about how a composer's personal life can shape their music? Like, Glazunov was so young when he wrote that elegy – it must've been like pouring your heart out on paper 📝. And the way Hrůša balances grandeur with intimacy is just masterful... makes me wonder what our own heroic stories are hiding beneath the surface 🤔

I'm loving this new album from the Bamberg Symphony. 🎵 They've managed to capture the essence of these 19th-century masterpieces, you know? Like, have you ever listened to Dvořák's "A Hero's Song" before? It's so underrated! I mean, who doesn't love a good underdog story in music? 😊 And Glazunov's "To the Memory of a Hero" is giving me all the feels. That 20-year-old composer was like a genius or something! 🤯 The way they're performing it now is just so beautiful and somber. I'm also loving how Maestro Hrůša is bringing out the best in these pieces, you know? It's like he's telling the stories that the composers didn't even get to tell themselves! 📚 Anyway, if you haven't listened to this album yet, what are you waiting for? Trust me, it's a game-changer! 💥
