Subzero wind chills make for dangerously cold weekend in NYC area, officials warn

Biting Chill Hits NYC: Officials Warn of Arctic Blast

Residents of New York City are bracing for a weekend of subzero temperatures that will make the outdoors an unforgiving environment. A powerful Arctic cold front is expected to move in on Saturday, bringing a brief window of snowfall before plummeting temperatures take hold.

According to meteorologists at the National Weather Service, New Yorkers can expect temperatures to drop rapidly, with lows predicted to reach as low as 5 degrees by Sunday morning. The strong winds will push real-feel temperatures down to minus 15 or minus 20 degrees, posing a significant threat to life and health.

The extreme cold warning issued by the NWS has officials urging residents to take precautions seriously. They are advising people to check on their neighbors and pets, especially vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young children. It's also crucial for everyone to bundle up in layers and limit exposed skin while outside.

"We're going to start the day in the lower 20s, and then it looks like by early evening we could be down to around 10 degrees," said David Stark, a NWS meteorologist. "These conditions can lead to hypothermia and frostbite in as little as 15 to 30 minutes."

The harsh weather has already claimed several lives in the city. In the past two weeks, at least 17 people have been found dead outside, with many of those deaths suspected to be caused by hypothermia.

In response to the crisis, officials are calling on residents to report anyone who appears vulnerable to the cold by contacting 311. The city is also adjusting its housing inspectors' schedules to address a record number of complaints about lack of heat and hot water in homes.

With temperatures expected to rebound starting Tuesday, some relief may be on the horizon. However, even with warmer temperatures forecasted for the rest of the week, the average temperature will still be below 40 degrees – far from the normal standards.

For now, residents are advised to prioritize their safety by staying indoors and taking precautions against the extreme cold. The city's waterways have also been severely impacted, with New York City Ferry service suspended until further notice.

ugh this arctic blast is super scary πŸ₯Ά but like i guess it's also kinda cool that we're getting a break from all this warm weather for a sec? i mean who doesn't love a good excuse to stay inside and binge-watch their fave shows with a hot cuppa β˜•οΈ?! plus, the city is being super proactive about checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets, which is amazing πŸΎπŸ’• so let's just hope everyone stays safe and warm until the temps rise again πŸ’‘

πŸ₯Ά oh man, it's like we're living in a winter wonderland or something 🌟 but not in a good way lol. i feel so bad for those people who lost their lives to hypothermia already this week. 17 is just heartbreaking 😭 and now with the wind chill making it even colder? that's just crazy 🀯. what's even more concerning is how many people are going to be affected by lack of heat in their homes... it's like, we need to take care of each other here! πŸ€— so yeah, let's all stay warm and safe indoors this weekend and hope the weather improves soon 🌞

Yeah, because freezing your face off wasn't hard enough already... I mean, who needs that kind of drama in their lives? πŸ˜’ It's just a heads up from the NWS to bundle up and check on our seniors... like we hadn't heard that one before πŸ™„. Anyone else planning on enjoying the ice rink in Central Park this weekend or will it be more like an ice box out there? ❄️

🌫️ This is getting crazy 😬. People need to take this seriously, it's not just about wearing a coat or gloves anymore. Hypothermia and frostbite are no joke 🚨. Let's make sure we're checking on each other, especially our neighbors and pets πŸΎπŸ’•. If you see someone shivering on the street, report them to 311, it could save a life ❀️. Stay safe, NYC πŸ’ͺ

ugh this is crazy!!! like what even is arctic blast? sounds super scary πŸ₯Ά anyone know how long its gonna take for it to go away?! i heard 17 people already died outside from the cold... thats so sad πŸ˜” and i dont get why they need to adjust housing inspectors' schedules because of heat issues... cant they just fix it like, ASAP? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ anywayz, hope ppl stay safe n warm πŸ’‘

Ugh, this Arctic blast is literally gonna be a nightmare for NYC residents... People need to be super careful, especially seniors and little kids who can't even move around in that cold. It's wild how quickly temps can drop, like 15-30 minutes? That's insane! They should really consider implementing some sort of emergency heat distribution system or something. And omg, the city's waterways are a mess now... πŸŒŠβ„οΈ

Brrr... this arctic blast is freaking me out πŸ₯ΆπŸŒ«οΈ I mean, 5 degrees in just a few hours? That's crazy cold 😱. I'm already planning to stay indoors for the weekend and check on my neighbors too, just in case someone needs help. And yeah, it's super important to bundle up like a snowman πŸŽ…οΈ. The thought of real-feel temps being minus 15 or minus 20 degrees is giving me chills 😱. I feel bad for all those people who have already lost their lives to the cold. It's just so harsh and unforgiving ❄️. Can't wait till Tuesday when things start to warm up a bit, but at least we'll still be below 40 degrees? πŸ€”

Ugh, this arctic blast is no joke πŸ€•! I feel so bad for all those vulnerable ppl out there who can't afford to keep warm at home. The city should do more to help ppl who are struggling, like providing emergency warmth or something πŸ€—. And what's up with the housing inspectors just now? It's like they're only helping ppl when it's too cold to go outside πŸ˜”. We need some serious support for our neighbors and pets, especially seniors and kids! Bundle up and stay safe, NYC πŸ’•

omg this is getting serious πŸ€• people need to take care of each other esp those vulnerable ones πŸ’– bundle up in layers already ❄️ it's not worth risking ur life or health for a sec just to go outside πŸ˜’ hope ppl get thru this wknd without anyone else losin ur life πŸ’”

omg u wont beleev what's happenin in nyc rn! like arctic blast is gonna hit & ppl r talkin bout minus 15 temp lol yeah its real tho, theyre advisin people to bundle up & check on neighbors & pets its like woah! been hearing about hypothermia & frostbite 4eva but still didnt think it was a thing u should really keep an eye on ur elderly ppl & kids dey r most vulnerable i hope ppl r prepared 4 dis cold snap

🌨️ this is so crazy! i was in nyc last month and it felt like winter already... now its even colder than that? my grandma lives in queens and she always worries about the cold. we gotta make sure to check on her and make sure she's got warm clothes πŸ§₯πŸ’ͺ the city should do more to help people who dont have heat or hot water, thats so not fair βš–οΈ

Ugh, this arctic blast is like something out of a nightmare, ya know? I mean, 5 degrees is crazy low for NYC! And don't even get me started on those real-feel temps going down to -15 or -20 degrees... that's just straight-up brutal. I'm so glad they're warning people about hypothermia and frostbite, 'cause it's easy to take your health for granted when the weather is this bad.

I'm all for checking in on our neighbors and pets, especially seniors and kiddos who might not be able to handle the cold as well. And bundling up in layers? That's just basic common sense, but I guess we need to be reminded of that sometimes πŸ˜‚. 17 people have already lost their lives due to this weather... that's just heartbreaking.

I'm not gonna lie, the city's waterways situation is pretty messed up too. Suspension of NYC Ferry service until further notice? That's a big deal for people who rely on those services. And with temps only going back up starting Tuesday, it's gonna take a while to get through this... fingers crossed everyone stays safe and warm! βš οΈπŸ’‘

Ugh, can't believe all this fuss over a bit of cold weather 🀣πŸ₯Ά. People are gonna let a few degrees drop and freak out? Get some gloves, scarf up, and go for a walk or something! It's not like it's Antarctica out there... πŸ˜‚ 17 people dead? That's a pretty weak excuse to cancel everything. If you can't handle the cold, stay inside and watch Netflix like everyone else πŸ“ΊπŸ‘€. And btw, what's with all these precautions? A little layering and some hand warmers isn't gonna hurt anyone... πŸ˜‚

Brrr πŸ˜“πŸŒ¨οΈ Arctic blast is comin' ❄️! Nycers better wrap up warm πŸ”₯πŸ’ͺ or risk gettin' frostbite πŸ€•πŸ˜¨ Low temps? 5 degrees? ⬇️ That's crazy cold! πŸ‘€ Strong winds will make it feel even worse πŸ’¨β„οΈ Hypothermia and frostbite are no joke πŸ˜…. Check on elderly & pets, bundle up, stay indoors ⚠️ Stay safe, NYC! πŸ™πŸ’•
