Subzero wind chills make for dangerously cold weekend in NYC area, officials warn

Bitter Chill Grips New York City Area: Officials Warn of Life-Threatening Temperatures

A sweltering Arctic blast is set to engulf the New York metropolitan area this weekend, leaving residents bracing for frigid conditions that could prove fatal. Temperatures are expected to plummet, with bone-chilling lows and winds howling at up to 20 mph, making it a treacherous outing for anyone planning to venture outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service, an Arctic cold front will sweep in on Saturday morning, bringing a brief flurry of snow before the mercury drops to unseasonable levels. By evening, temperatures are predicted to plummet, with lows dipping as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit by Sunday morning. The real-feel temperatures will be even more unforgiving, with gusts reducing visibility and making hypothermia and frostbite a very real threat in as little as 15-30 minutes.

Residents have been warned by officials to check on vulnerable neighbors and pets throughout the weekend and to bundle up in layers when venturing outside. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has urged residents to take the forecast seriously, warning that temperatures will be "bitter" and "feel like you've never felt anything before."

The cold snap comes as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather conditions. In recent weeks, at least 17 people have died outside in the city, with many suspected cases linked to hypothermia. The death toll is prompting authorities to take action, including diverting calls about vulnerable individuals to 911 during the "Code Blue" emergency.

The city's housing inspectors are also being adjusted to deal with a record number of complaints about lack of heat and hot water in homes, which spiked last month. Meanwhile, New York City Ferry service remains suspended due to ice in its waterways, with plans to resume limited operations next week.

As the city grapples with this extreme weather event, officials are urging residents to prioritize their safety above all else – taking precautions to stay warm and safe, and seeking help if needed.

OMG u guys!!!! NYC is gonna be FROZEN!!! 5 degrees Fahrenheit?!? that's like literally -15 Celsius!!!! how r ppl sposed 2 handle dat?!?! i mean i know they warned us but still it sounds soooo harsh!! i feel bad for those who r struggling w/ heat & hot water issues already lol idk how they're gonna cope w/ this Arctic blast too πŸ€ͺπŸ˜‚πŸ”₯

Ugh, I remember those harsh winters in NYC like they were yesterday πŸ₯ΆπŸ˜¬. The cold can be unforgiving, especially for the elderly & young kids. We gotta look out for each other & make sure everyone's good to go this weekend ❄️. I'm all for checking in on neighbors & pets, but what about those who can't get heat in their homes? That's just not right πŸ˜•. Authorities need to step it up & help these people ASAP.

oh man, this is crazy 🀯 5 degrees Fahrenheit? that's like, way below human survivable temps πŸ˜“ i feel bad for ppl who have to brave it out on the streets, especially seniors & young kids no heat or hot water in homes either? that's just not right ❄️ we gotta get to the bottom of this & make sure everyone's got a warm place to stay 🏠

omg u guys this is getting crazy lol the temp is supposed 2 drop that low?! like, i've lived in nyc my whole life & never had 2 deal w/ temps this low πŸ₯Ά my grandma lives in ny btw & she's all like "i'm so worried bout her pets" πŸΎπŸ’• & yeah, the gov is right, these temps r NO JOKE ❄️ gotta make sure ur elderly neighbors are checked on & bundled up w/ layers πŸ’‘ and omg the ferry service being suspended is wild too?! what's the point of even having a city if u can't even take a ferry ride during nice weather πŸ˜‚

omg, can u even imagine having to deal with temps that low? 5 degrees in nyc is like, way too cold! i'm a total tech geek, but even i know how quickly hypothermia can set in. gotta make sure our seniors & pets are all safe & cozy at home πŸ€ͺπŸ πŸ’•. and ugh, can we pls get that ny ferry service up & running ASAP? suspended for like, forever! 😩 still, at least the tech world is always there to help us stay connected (even when it's freezing outside). anyone got any sick gadgets to keep them warm & toasty in this arctic blast? πŸ€”πŸ“±

Ugh, I'm so over people freaking out about a little cold snap πŸ™„. Like, 5 degrees is not that bad, it's not like we're going to turn into human popsicles or something ❄️. I mean, I know some people might be vulnerable, but come on, check on your neighbors and stuff, no need to make a big deal out of it πŸ™. And honestly, I'm more worried about the tourists who are going to try and brave the cold with their ridiculous winter gear πŸ˜‚. Newsflash: you don't have to wear 10 layers just because it's cold outside! πŸ’β€β™€οΈ Plus, I heard the city is still paying for all those fancy heating systems in homeless shelters... that's where my money should be going πŸ€‘. Let's not get too carried away with this whole "bitter chill" thing πŸ˜’.

Ugh, this weekend is gonna be SO not good for Nyc πŸ€•! Like seriously, who prepares for temps that low? 5 degrees feels like -20 with the wind chill lol. I'm all about layering up & being prepared but come on, 17 deaths in one month due to extreme weather is just crazy ❄️. The fact that people have died outside is just horrific 😷. As a city dweller, I don't even know how to be ready for this kinda stuff. Heat or cold, it's always so unpredictable 🌑️. Have anyone else been bracing for this?

omg, 5 degrees F in nyc? that's even colder than my ex's heart after i dumped her lol. seriously tho, people need to bundle up like they're going on a polar bear expedition πŸ»β„οΈ. and yeah, it's crazy how quickly hypothermia can set in – like, 15-30 minutes? that's faster than i can scroll through my tiktoks πŸ“±πŸ˜‚. but seriously, let's all just stay inside, drink some hot cocoa, and watch the snow fall from a warm cozy spot. who needs to venture out when you have Netflix and a good blanket πŸ˜΄πŸ“Ί?

ugh this is crazy 🀯 i mean i know winter in nyc can be harsh but 5 degrees fahrenheit? that's just brutal πŸ’€ i'm no expert but it seems like they're taking it seriously which is good. the thing that bothers me though is all these deaths outside already this year - 17 people can't be a fluke, right? πŸ€” and what about those who can't afford heat or don't have access to resources? it's always something with nyc, but honestly i'm just glad they're being proactive about it 😊

omg u feel like it's gonna be soooo cold πŸ₯ΆπŸŒ¨οΈ this wkend? i get that gov kathy hochul is right tho... 5 degrees farenheit?? that's crazy! ppl need 2 b careful out there, esp those who r more vunerable 😊. can't even imagine venturing outside w/ wind gusts & temps dropping like dat ❄️. hope everyone stays safe & warm πŸ”₯πŸ‘
