Suspected Haitian gang members exchange fire with Marines protecting US Embassy in Port-au-Prince

Gunfire Erupts as Suspected Gang Members Target US Embassy Guardians in Haitian Capital

A shocking incident at the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital, has highlighted the escalating security crisis in the Caribbean nation. According to Captain Steven J. Keenan, a spokesman for the US Marines protecting the embassy, suspected Haitian gang members opened fire on American forces late Thursday, prompting a fierce response from the Marines.

Miraculously, no Marines were injured in the attack. However, the incident underscores the treacherous security situation in Haiti, where gangs hold sway over 90% of the capital city. These armed groups extort businesses, fight for territory, and wreak havoc using heavy weaponry.

The United States has been operating an embassy in Haiti since 1994, but the State Department has repeatedly warned Americans against traveling to the country due to the risks of kidnappings, crimes, terrorist activity, and civil unrest. The situation has deteriorated rapidly since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in his home by mercenaries in 2021. This power vacuum has left politicians struggling to fill it, with no elections having taken place to replace the late president.

The international community is increasingly concerned about Haiti's security crisis. In recent months, the United Nations Security Council voted to deploy a gang suppression force of approximately 5,500 troops to fight the heavily armed gangs that have been terrorizing the country. According to the UN Human Rights Office, these gangs claimed responsibility for the deaths of an estimated 5,600 people last year.

As the situation in Haiti continues to spiral out of control, the international community must take decisive action to address the root causes of this crisis and provide support to the Haitian people who are suffering under the yoke of gang violence.

This is getting super crazy in Haiti 🤯. I mean, 90% of the capital city controlled by gangs? That's just insane! The US has been there since '94, but it's like they're just trying to stick around for the sake of being there rather than actually helping the country stabilize.

I'm not surprised no Marines were hurt tho, they must've had some serious backup plans in place 💯. But seriously, 5,600 deaths last year? That's just devastating 🤕. We need to get some real action going over here, like sending that UN gang suppression force ASAP ⏱️. The Haitian people deserve better than this 😔.

😱 oh man, this is getting really scary... I mean, I've been following what's going on in Haiti for a while now, but it seems like things are just spiraling out of control over there. 90% of Port-au-Prince being controlled by gangs is just unbelievable 🤯. How can that even be allowed to happen? And the fact that the US had to respond with gunfire... it's just so concerning for anyone who has family or friends traveling to Haiti. I know they're already advised against it, but this incident just makes me want to take extra precautions if I do have loved ones planning a trip there. 🚨

I'm really worried about what's happening in Haiti right now 🤕. It's like, the US Embassy is being targeted by these suspected gang members, and it's just a sign that things are getting out of control over there. The situation with the gangs holding sway over 90% of Port-au-Prince is insane - I mean, who lets this kind of thing happen? The fact that they're using heavy weaponry to extort businesses and fight for territory is super concerning.

And the US has been trying to help them out since 1994, but it's clear that more needs to be done. The State Department warning Americans against traveling there due to all these risks... I get it, it's not a safe place right now. But what about all the people who are already living there? They need support and protection too.

I think we should be looking at ways to address the root causes of this crisis - like, how did we get here in the first place? And what can we do to help stabilize the country? Deploying a gang suppression force is a good start, but it's not just about sending in troops...

Ugh 😩 this is just getting crazy, like, what's going on with these gangs in Haiti? I mean, 90% of Port-au-Prince under their control? It's like, no wonder the US embassy has to have all that security 🤯 and it's not even enough! They're basically running around like headless chickens. And those numbers, 5,600 deaths last year? It's just heartbreaking 💔. The UN is sending more troops but I don't think that's gonna fix anything. We need to get to the root of this problem, you know? Poverty, lack of opportunities... we can't just dump more resources into it without addressing the actual issues 🤷‍♀️. I'm all for supporting Haiti and the people there, but we gotta do better than just throwing money at it 💸.

man this is getting crazy 🤯 what's going on with haiti? it feels like they're being taken over by gangs and nobody's doing anything about it 🚫 5,600 deaths last year alone that's insane 😱 and now the US embassy is getting attacked too? it's not surprising though, the state department has been warning people against traveling there for years but still some ppl wanna take a risk 🤦‍♂️ the international community needs to step in and help these ppl out 🙏 we need to find out what's causing this crisis and put an end to it ASAP ⏱️
