Syrian refugee elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war | CNN

A Syrian refugee has made history in Germany by winning a mayoral election in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg. Ryyan Alshebl, 29, who fled war-torn Syria eight years ago, ran as an independent candidate in the municipality of Ostelsheim and won a resounding 55.41% of the votes, defeating two German opponents.

Alshebl's victory has been met with jubilation from locals, who hailed him as a symbol of broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism in a conservative rural area. In his winning speech, Alshebl described Ostelsheim as an "example for Germany" that will encourage more people to run for office despite their migration history.

The young politician's journey to the top began when he was forced to flee Syria at 21 due to the devastating civil war and subsequent rise of ISIS. He made the perilous journey from Turkey to Greece, arriving in Germany via a rubber dinghy. Alshebl has since become a German citizen and has worked for seven years in local administration, including a stint as assistant mayor in a neighboring town.

As a member of the Green Party, Alshebl campaigned on a platform of improving public services, increasing digital access, and implementing climate protections. His agenda resonated with voters, who appreciated his fresh perspective and commitment to inclusive governance.

Alshebl's election victory has sparked hope for greater diversity and representation in local politics. The Association of Municipalities of Baden-Württemberg has hailed him as a trailblazer, becoming the first Syrian-born individual to hold public office.

Despite initial backlash from far-right groups, Alshebl faced largely positive reactions during his campaign. However, he acknowledged that some individuals did express hateful comments due to his Syrian heritage. Alshebl's courage in the face of adversity and commitment to promoting unity have won over many supporters.

With his election victory, Alshebl is poised to become a role model for young people with migrant backgrounds seeking to make a difference in their communities. As he prepares to take office in June, the German public looks forward to seeing how this trailblazing leader will shape the future of Ostelsheim and beyond.

I'm still waiting for Google to add translation features for non-English speakers 😒🇬🇩 I mean, come on guys, we're living in 2025! Can't they just provide a simple translation button like every other major platform? 🤦‍♂️ It's so frustrating when I see news about refugees and immigrants and the translation is way too auto-generated... it sounds like a robot is speaking English. Can't we get some human touch in the translation department? 🙄
