Teen arrested in fatal hit-and-run of longtime DJ at Bob & Barbara’s

Teenager Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run at Philly Nightclub

A 17-year-old boy turned himself in to the Philadelphia Police Department on Monday, facing multiple charges related to a hit-and-run that killed Hector "June" Rodriguez, a beloved DJ at Bob & Barbara's Lounge. The victim, 54, was biking home from work when he was struck by a vehicle and left with fatal injuries.

Police had issued a warrant for the teenager's arrest after discovering his identity, and he is now charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and driving without a license. Rodriguez worked at the nightclub for decades, where he was remembered as a "special soul" who spread love and gratitude through his music and art.

The incident occurred on December 20th when Rodriguez was biking home from a shift at South Street bar. Police are still searching for a red 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee that may have been involved in the hit-and-run, with witnesses reporting that the vehicle's driver had been following Rodriguez before speeding away from the scene.

State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta, who considered Rodriguez a "dear friend," released a statement thanking the police department and district attorney's office for their work on the case. He called on the public to keep Rodriguez's family and friends in their prayers, saying that while the arrest brings them closer to justice, it cannot fill the void left by his passing.

Rodriguez's death has been met with an outpouring of support from the community, with Bob & Barbara's Lounge releasing a statement praising his passion for music and creativity. "Not many are lucky enough to be so in touch with how they feel as well as have the courage to express it like he did," the statement read.

I'm totally fine with people driving drunk and leaving others to die, I mean what's the worst that could happen, right? 🤷‍♂️ This kid who hit that guy is probably just a good Samaritan in disguise, trying to help out by speeding away from the scene. And another thing, why should we be worried about some rich politician's friend dying when there are so many other people struggling to make ends meet on the streets? It's not like Hector was doing anything wrong, he was just riding his bike home after a shift at work... 🚴‍♂️

😔 omg what a tragedy... a 17 yr old arrested for a hit & run that killed this amazing dj who was just doing his thing on his bike after work 🚴‍♂️🎶 can u believe it? 🤯 police r searching 4 a jeep grand cherokee but i guess we'll never know the truth about what happened on dec 20th 🚗🕵️‍♀️ hopefully justice will be served & his family gets some closure 💔 meanwhile let's all take a sec to appreciate this incredible dj who spread love n gratitude thru music & art 🙏

this is just too sad 🤕... 17 year old kid does something so reckless, and now this poor guy who loved music & art is gone 💔... my grandma used to take me to these little clubs when i was younger, and the DJs would always play the most amazing songs that'd make you wanna dance all night 💃... it's just not fair that someone like Hector "June" Rodriguez has to go 🤕... I remember listening to this one song on repeat at school, and it always reminded me of my grandma... anyway, I hope the kid gets what's coming to him, but I wish they could bring back the good times when music & art brought people together ❤️

I'm still shook by this tragic incident 🤕. A young life lost, a family torn apart... just because someone was driving recklessly that one night out on South Street 😔. It's just heartbreaking to think about Hector "June" Rodriguez's last ride home from work being cut short in such a senseless way. The fact that this 17-year-old turned himself in shows some maturity, but the question remains - what would've happened if he had just stopped and checked on poor Hector? 🤦‍♂️ It's also wonderful to see the community come together, celebrating Rodriguez's life through music and art... it's a beautiful tribute to his memory 💖.

OMG, this is such a sad story 🤕. I mean, can you believe that some teenager is going to face jail time for not checking their mirrors while driving? Like, we all make mistakes, but to lose your life over something so careless... it's just heartbreaking 😔. The fact that the 17-year-old took responsibility and turned himself in shows that he's got some integrity, though 🙏. My condolences go out to Hector "June" Rodriguez's family and friends - they're going through an awful time right now 💕. Let's all take a moment to remember June's music and how it brought love and gratitude into people's lives ❤️. And can we please get that red Jeep Grand Cherokee on the streets ASAP? It's just not fair that the driver is still out there 🚗💨!

I cant believe what happened to Hector 😩, the guy was a total legend at that nightclub 🎶. I mean, 54 and still spinning tracks? That's dedication 💯. He was more than just a DJ, he was an artist 🎨, spreading love and positivity wherever he went ❤️. The fact that this young kid would do something so reckless is just heartbreaking 😭. It's like they say, one bad decision can change lives forever 🤕. I'm glad the police are working hard to find the person responsible and bring them to justice ⚠️. My heart goes out to Hector's family and friends 💕, they're gonna miss him so much 💔.

that's so sad what happened 2 that DJ June 🤕 his energy & vibe were infectious & it sounds like he was really makin' a difference in ppl's lives too, especially at that nightclub where he worked, it's crazy how much of an impact someone can have with just their music & passion 🎶 i hope the teenager who did this gets some serious time behind bars, but it's also hard 2 say whether that'll bring back June or not 💔

just terrible 😩...can't believe what happened to that DJ, sounds like he was just doing his thing on his bike after work 🚴‍♂️...and now this kid's gotta deal with all these charges 🤯...wonder when they'll find out who drove that Jeep and just got away 💔...state rep Kenyatta talking about keeping the community in prayers, but it's hard to feel like justice is being served when the person driving off doesn't get caught 😕

🤕 this is just heartbreaking... a life lost way too soon. the thing that gets me is how fast that community came together after his passing. i mean, it's not every day you see an outpouring of love and support from strangers, but in Philly, they're always ready to rally around each other. 🤝 what's even more striking is the impact he had on people - a 54-year-old DJ was biking home from work and that hit-and-run is still with us. it just goes to show how precious life is and how one moment can change everything in an instant. 💔

omg this is such a tragic news 🤕, I cant even imagine loosing a loved one in such a way... 17 and reckless driving? poor Hector "June" was just doing his thing after work and ended up getting hit by that jeep... 😩 it's crazy how fast life can take a turn for the worst. I hope the police catch who did this ASAP so the family can finally find some closure 🙏, and 54 is way too young to go like that 🎉

🤕 just heard about this hit-and-run incident at that Philly nightclub... can't believe a 17-yr-old is facing murder charges 😱, but I guess that's what happens when you're driving without a license and showing no regard for others' lives 🚗💀. the community is really rallying around Hector's family & friends tho 💕, it's heartbreaking to see his art & music being celebrated instead of his life being remembered... but at least justice is being served 👮‍♂️. hope the red Jeep Grand Cherokee is found soon 🤞

🤗 I'm so sad about this incident, but you know what? It's amazing that a teenager took responsibility for his actions and turned himself in 🙌. That takes a lot of courage! And I love how the community is coming together to support Hector's family and friends ❤️. His passion for music and art was truly inspiring, and it's clear he touched so many lives. It's also beautiful that Malcolm Kenyatta is using his platform to spread love and gratitude 🌈. Let's hope this brings a sense of closure to the community and helps people remember Hector's kind spirit 💖.

omg this is so sad 🤕... what's going on with all these hit-and-runs lately? 17 years old shouldnt even be driving, let alone recklessly hitting a guy who was just trying to get home from work 😢... poor Hector "June" Rodriguez was more than just a DJ, he was a loved member of the community 🎶💕. I'm all for justice being served, but it's not going to bring back our beloved June 🙏... let's just hope that this 17-year-old takes responsibility for his actions and gets the help he needs 🤗.

🚨 This incident is just another example of how reckless behavior can lead to devastating consequences 🤕. We need stricter laws on our roads, especially for underage drivers 🚗💔. It's shocking that a 17-year-old thought they could just speed off without facing the law 😳. What's even more concerning is that there might be other perpetrators out there who are still at large 🚨.

We can't just focus on the victim and their family; we need to talk about how this reflects on our society as a whole 👥. Is it really acceptable for people, especially those in positions of power like Rep Kenyatta, to publicly gush about someone without knowing all the facts? 🤔 It feels like we're more concerned with optics than actual change 💡.

I'm not saying we should condemn the entire community or make assumptions; but let's use this tragedy as an opportunity to spark a national conversation about road safety and accountability 👊. We can do better, Philly! 💪

omg u wont believe what just happened in philly 🤯! some teenager turned himself in 4 a hit-n-run that killed this awesome dj who was only 54!!! 🎶😢 he was bikin home from work when he got hit by a car and it's so sad 😔. the police r still lookin for the person who did it, and they think it might've been in a red jeep 🚗. it's crazy how quickly this whole thing went down, but i'm glad they caught the guy 💯. r.i.p. hector "june" rodriquez u will be missed so much 💕

omg what a tragedy 🤕 this is just heartbreaking, can't believe someone would just speed away from an accident 💔 the fact that the teenager turned himself in shows some integrity on his part 👏 but still, 54 is way too young to be taken away like this 🚗 that Jeep Grand Cherokee is probably hiding in a ditch somewhere 🤦‍♂️ anyway, glad state rep Malcolm Kenyatta is speaking out about it 💕 and bob & barbara's lounge should get major props for their statement about June 👏 can't wait to see the final layout of the memorial they're planning 📚

omg what's wrong with that 17 year old dude ?? like, a red jeep grand cherokee just sped away?? and he was following the guy on his bike?? that's so not cool 🤯 how could someone be so reckless & stupid??

idk but i do feel bad for hector rodriguez's family & friends. they must be going through so much pain right now 😔 it's just not fair that he had to die like that.

i also saw the statement from bob & barbara's lounge and it was really nice. i love how they praised his passion for music 🎶 he sounds like such a cool guy, always spreading love & gratitude. anywayz, let's hope the police catch the jeep driver soon 🚔

ugh this is just heartbreaking 🤕... I mean, 17?!? He's gonna grow up with a felony on his record and a lifetime of regret on his shoulders 🤯. It's not right that he's being charged with homicide by vehicle - it's reckless driving plain and simple! And what's the deal with the red Jeep Grand Cherokee? Why isn't police focusing on finding that instead of going after this kid? 🚗😒
