Teen facing reckless homicide charges in 2024 Bronzeville DUI crash that killed 2

Chicago Teen Charged with Reckless Homicide in DUI Crash that Claimed Two Lives

A 19-year-old Chicago resident, Erick Garcia-Ambriz, is facing severe charges after being accused of killing two people in a reckless driving incident on October 14th. According to authorities, the teen was behind the wheel of his vehicle when he failed to stop at a red light and crashed into another car, causing massive damage that left one person dead.

Garcia-Ambriz's blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.124%, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08%. The crash occurred in the early hours of the morning on South Michigan Avenue, where Garcia-Ambriz was driving a black Infiniti Q50. The other vehicle involved was a silver Chevrolet, which sustained significant damage and crashed onto the sidewalk.

Two people were inside the Chevrolet at the time of the accident: Kalieb Ghebreyesus, 45, from Des Plaines, who was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center; and Shanika Smith, 45, from Chicago, who also died shortly after arrival. Garcia-Ambriz, whose age was not specified in initial reports but has since been confirmed to be 19, was taken into custody.

The authorities have charged him with two counts of reckless homicide, as well as two misdemeanor charges related to aggravated DUI. A pretrial detention hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, where he will face the possibility of severe penalties for his actions.

.. this just breaks my heart πŸ€• I'm only 29 and it's already like watching these tragic stories unfold before me. A 19-year-old making life-altering decisions behind the wheel? It's crazy to think about how much potential that kid has wasted on reckless behavior 😩. I mean, I get it, we all make mistakes, but come on! The numbers don't lie – that blood-alcohol level is a ticking time bomb waiting to happen.

It's just so frustrating because you can see the fear in the eyes of Kalieb and Shanika's families, and it's like they're living through this nightmare for real πŸ’”. You can't even process how fast 19 goes by – from wide-eyed freshman to reckless driver? The thought alone makes me wanna scream 😀.

A pretrial detention hearing is gonna be brutal for that kid. I'm rooting for justice, but part of me wishes he could've gotten a second chance 🀞. Guess you can't turn back the clock and give those two lives back...

Ugh, I'm still thinking about that Netflix show I watched over the weekend 🀯. Have you guys seen "The Last of Us"? It's soooo good! The way they recreate the post-apocalyptic world is insane 😲. And Joel's character... man, he's just so brooding and complex πŸ’€. I swear, I'm still thinking about that one scene where he's running from those infected people... πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ my heart was racing! Anyway, back to real life... how do you guys think the justice system handles these types of cases? Should they be tougher on reckless drivers or is it just not effective? πŸ˜•

Ugh, this is just devastating πŸ€•. Can you believe some people's reckless behavior? 19 and already getting behind the wheel of an Infiniti? Come on! That's like playing with fire πŸ”₯. Garcia-Ambriz's blood-alcohol content was way over the limit, which tells me he wasn't even thinking straight 🀯.

Red lights are meant to be respected. If he couldn't stop at that light, how many other lives would've been lost? It's just not worth the risk 🚫. Two innocent people are gone, and their families will never get to see them walk into their 50s.

This is what reckless driving gets you. Not just the other driver or passengers, but an entire community that's grieving for loss of life πŸ’”. I hope he takes responsibility for his actions and faces the consequences 🀞.

Oh man πŸ€• this is just heartbreaking! 19 is way too young to be behind the wheel and making reckless decisions that can cost lives πŸ’€. You've got to wonder what was going through his mind that night, like, why did he speed up on a red light? Did he not even see the other car there? It's a total shame for Kalieb's family and Shanika's loved ones who have to deal with this now πŸ€•.

And to think, it could've been so preventable if only he'd just kept his cool and waited for that light to change. The fact that he was driving drunk is just icing on the cake 🍰. I mean, we all know what can happen when you get behind the wheel after having a few too many drinks... it's just not worth the risk 🚫.

It's crazy how these car crashes can have such devastating consequences and affect so many lives πŸ’”. Let's hope that Erick gets the help he needs to turn his life around, but for now, it's all about accountability 🀝

I think it's way too harsh on this kid πŸ€”. One mistake and suddenly you're facing life in prison? I mean, we've all had a few too many beers and gotten behind the wheel at some point, right? It's not like he planned to hurt anyone. The fact that his BAC was just above the limit is still pretty low, considering it's a 19-year-old who's probably never even been in trouble before.

And what about the other driver? We don't know if they were speeding or following too closely. Wasn't Garcia-Ambriz doing the same thing when he ran that red light? It's not like he was the only one at fault here... πŸ™„

I'm so mad at this guy... 😑 how could he be so careless? driving drunk is just insane and now 2 lives are gone 🀯 I mean, 19 is still pretty young to be dealing with all that responsibility but at the same time, shouldn't he have known better by now? Like, have you seen all those public service ads about DUI? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ it's just not cool to take your life and others' lives into your own hands... but on the other hand, 0.124% is still kinda low, I mean, some people can handle way more than that before things go wrong... what even is a safe limit here? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ˜” Oh my gosh, this is just so heartbreaking! Two lives lost because of a driver's careless mistake πŸ€•. I'm really worried about Erick's future and the impact this will have on his young life πŸ˜”. It's such a shame that he won't get to experience all the amazing things life has to offer πŸ’”. Can only hope he gets the help he needs and becomes a better person for it πŸ’ͺ.

This kid is just a teenager and already facing charges that could put him away for good? It's like, I get it, drunk driving is no joke, but come on! 0.124% BAC is still way below the limit... I don't think it's fair to throw the book at him yet. What really gets me though is that he's only 19 and has his whole life ahead of him... does this mean he'll be locked up for years? It feels so harsh 😩

I don't usually comment but I think it's really sad that a young person like Erick Garcia-Ambriz made such a stupid mistake. He was driving with a BAC of 0.124%, which is way above the limit, and caused two people to lose their lives. It's just not worth risking someone else's life, you know? I mean, I've had my fair share of parties and maybe had one too many drinks, but I never thought about putting others in danger like that.

It's also kinda crazy how reckless driving can happen so quickly - Erick was driving down a major street with no signs of slowing down or even paying attention. It's just not right. Anyway, I hope Erick gets the help he needs and maybe takes some time to reflect on his actions. πŸ˜”

I'm so shocked by this story 🀯. It's crazy how one mistake can lead to such devastating consequences. The teen's BAC was like, totally over the limit 😱 and it's just not worth risking lives like that. I feel bad for Kalieb and Shanika's families who have to go through this - it's just so unfair πŸ’”. We need more people like Erick to speak up and share their concerns about drunk driving πŸš—πŸ’¨. Maybe if we had more awareness campaigns, this wouldn't happen to innocent people πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

man this guy is lucky he's only gettin a slap on the wrist compared to other people who drink and drive... like 45 yrs old kalieb was driving that car with his wife 19 yrs old guy gets sentenced to the max, it just don't seem right πŸ€”πŸš—

I'm literally so bummed about this... a 19-yr-old lost control of his car and took two lives πŸ€•πŸš—. I mean, can you even imagine being in that situation? One minute you're driving along, the next your life is over πŸ’€. It's just heartbreaking for everyone involved. And to think he was DUI too... it's like, how reckless can you be? πŸ™„. This kid needs to face the consequences and take some time to reflect on his actions. Maybe even some rehab or counseling to help him understand why this happened. We need more people like Kalieb and Shanika in our lives, not less πŸ’•.

OMG 🀯 this is so sad!!! I mean, can you even imagine being behind the wheel when something like this happens? πŸš—πŸ’” Erick Garcia-Ambriz's life is literally over... well, not literally lol but he's got some major years ahead of him stuck in a cell. 0.124% BAC is crazy! How did this happen?! Did his parents just let him out too early or something? 😩 anywayz, it's like Chicago is gonna be all shook up 'cause this teen was from there and stuff... hope the family of Kalieb & Shanika find peace πŸ™

Ugh, this is so heartbreaking πŸ€•. I mean, a 19-year-old kid making such a reckless decision that takes away not one but TWO lives... it's just mind-boggling. It's like, we're already seeing more and more young people getting behind the wheel after bingeing or partying, and it's just so preventable. I think we need to start talking about the importance of responsible drinking and driving (and not even driving if you've been drinking at all 🚫). We can't keep letting this happen, especially in a city like Chicago where safety is supposed to be a top priority.

πŸ˜• This is like such a sobering reminder that driving can be super unforgiving if you're not being responsible πŸš—. I mean, 0.124% BAC is crazy high, and it's just not worth risking someone's life over a night out. πŸ˜“ Erick needs to think about the consequences of his actions... two lives lost over a momentary lapse in judgment? It's just heartbreaking πŸ’”.
