The 2026 Winter Olympics Will Have a Major Impact on the Region’s Snow

The 2026 Winter Olympics, set to take place in Milano Cortina, Italy, are projected to exacerbate the already precarious snow situation in the region. A recent report by the New Weather Institute has revealed that the Games' three main sponsors - Eni, Stellantis, and ITA Airways - could potentially offset any carbon reductions made by the event itself, leading to a catastrophic loss of 5.5 square kilometers of snowpack and approximately 34 million metric tons of glacial ice.

In stark contrast, removing these high-emissions sponsors from the sponsorship deals would have significantly reduced emissions, with the total emissions being 22 percent lower than those experienced during the PyeongChang Winter Games in 2018.

Critics argue that promoting big polluters at events like the Olympics perpetuates the problem and can lead to increased carbon-intensive sales. However, organizers of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games are taking steps towards sustainability by reusing existing infrastructure, building only two new permanent venues compared to six during PyeongChang and 14 in Sochi.

Experts stress that the environmental impact of such events should not be ignored, as they contribute to the already alarming decline in snow cover and glacier melting due to climate change. The situation is dire, with Italy alone having lost over 265 ski resorts in the past five years. By 2050s, only 52 locations worldwide will be considered "climate-reliable" for hosting Winter Olympics.

In response to these findings, some critics have questioned whether high-profile events like the Olympics are truly making a positive impact on reducing carbon emissions.

I'm just reading about how Milano Cortina 2026 is gonna mess up Italy's snow situation even more 🌨️😩. Like, I get that sponsors gotta pay for all that Olympic jazz, but come on, can't they do better? I mean, those big polluters are basically offsetting any good that the Games could've done for the environment... it's just not right 🤦‍♂️. And what really gets me is how some people say these events aren't even making a difference in reducing emissions. Like, we know climate change is real and we need to act on it, but I guess some folks are still skeptical 😒.

I'm not buying into all this sponsorship drama 🤔. I mean, come on, 5.5 square kilometers of snowpack and 34 million metric tons of glacial ice? That's huge! And just to offset those emissions by removing sponsors? It's like trying to put out a fire with a damp sponge 💦.

But seriously, what's the real impact here? Is it really that simple to remove sponsors and reduce emissions? I don't think so. These are big corporations we're talking about, with deep pockets and long-term strategies. They're not just going to switch sides because of some sponsorship deal 🤑.

And have you seen the numbers on climate change? 52 locations worldwide by 2050s that can still host Winter Olympics? That's devastating. We need real action here, not just PR stunts and token changes to our event sponsorships 📺.

ugh its like theyre really trying to crush our hopes of saving earth from climate change lol 🤦‍♂️ i mean who sponsors big polluters and gets all this greenwashing nonsense anyway? eni stellantis and ita Airways r basically toxic industries that just cant be saved... and what do we get out of it? more lost snowpack and glaciers 🌎 5.5 square kilometers gone?! thats like, a whole city or something! 34 million metric tons of ice melting? how can we even begin to recover from this?!

and dont even get me started on the sustainability efforts... reusing infrastructure is cool and all, but its just not enough, you know? we cant just sweep our problems under the rug by building fewer venues 🤷‍♂️ 2 vs 6 or 14... it makes a difference?! and what about the carbon footprint of constructing new ones?! like, hello, every little bit counts, right?!

and experts say its dire, that only 52 locations worldwide will be "climate-reliable" by 2050s... like, what even is that supposed to mean? 🤔 are they gonna just magically find a way to make olympics sustainable or whats the point of having those numbers anyway?

can't believe our world is literally melting 🤯 and we're still debating whether the Olympics can make a difference... Italy's losing ski resorts left & right and now it's even asking to borrow snow from other countries? 🌨️ this whole thing just feels like a PR stunt, but at what cost? 5.5 sq km of snowpack gone in 2026? that's a massive loss for the environment... shouldn't we be trying to reduce emissions instead of offsetting them with big polluters? 😔

😬 I'm really worried about the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games and their potential impact on snowpack and glaciers 🤕 The fact that just removing three sponsors could offset all the good they're doing is crazy 💸 And don't even get me started on the number of new venues being built... it's like, what's the point if we're just gonna keep destroying our planet? 🌎 I mean, I get that these events are a big deal and people want to participate, but can't they at least try to be more sustainable? Like, reusing infrastructure is a good start, but it's not enough if we're still contributing to the problem in so many other ways 🤔

🤔 I'm all for the Olympics being eco-friendly and sustainable, but come on! 🌎 We're talking about 5.5 square kilometers of snowpack disappearing here... that's like, a whole ski resort gone! 😱 And it's not just the snow, it's the glaciers too, dude. 34 million metric tons of ice melting? That's like, a massive carbon footprint right there.

I get what they're saying about the sponsors and all, but can't we just find some other way to make it work? Like, how hard is it to find sustainable partners or something? 🤷‍♂️ It's not like we need Eni and Stellantis to save the world... although, I guess they could use a good PR boost.

And let's be real, 22 percent lower emissions compared to PyeongChang? That's still a pretty big deal. But at the same time, I feel like we're just patching up holes in the system instead of really addressing the issue. It's like, we need to think bigger here... or should I say, more sustainable? 🤯

Ugh man I'm getting so frustrated about this thing 🤦‍♂️... Like we're literally trying to reduce our carbon footprint and yet sponsors are still prioritizing their own dirty business over actual sustainability goals? It's crazy! Removing Eni, Stellantis, and ITA Airways from the sponsorship deal would've made a huge difference in reducing emissions - 22 percent lower than PyeongChang, can you even believe that?! 🤯 The Olympics are supposed to be this symbol of global unity and progress, but it feels like they're just perpetuating the problem we're trying to solve. I mean, what's the point of hosting these events if we're not going to take responsibility for our own environmental impact? 💔

omg i just can't even lol i mean dont get me wrong Milano Cortina 2026 is probs gonna be lit but at what cost tho? like seriously we cant just keep perpetuating climate change and expect everything to magically fix itself i went skiing last year in the italian alps and saw how fast the snow was melting like literally minutes after you stepped out of the chairlift it was already gone 🤯

anyway back to the news i feel so bad for those poor ski resorts in italy they must be losing their minds with all these closures i personally love hitting the slopes whenever i can but at the same time we gotta acknowledge that our actions have consequences and if big polluters are just gonna offset any good we do then whats the point 🤔

i think its super important that events like the Olympics prioritize sustainability from the get go maybe we need to rethink what it means for an event to be "successfull" if it comes at the cost of our planet 🌎

I'm so worried about Milano Cortina 2026 🤕 it's like they're trying to destroy what little snow we got left 🌨️ I mean, can't they just get rid of those polluting sponsors already? It's not like the games are gonna make that much of a difference in reducing emissions. And now I'm thinking about how many ski resorts Italy lost last year... it's devastating 💔 265?! We need to start taking care of our environment, not promoting big polluters 🚮

lololomo... come on guys! 🤦‍♂️ we're getting too caught up in what could go wrong here. I mean, yeah, it's true that these big sponsors might offset any good done by the event, but think of all the jobs and economic boost it'll bring to Italy? And have you seen the reusable infrastructure plans they've got? That's some serious eco-friendly vibes right there! 🌎💚

I'm not saying the impact should be ignored, obvs. We gotta be aware of our carbon footprint and all that. But let's not dismiss the potential benefits of events like this either. It's a chance to raise awareness about climate change and bring people together for a good cause? Can't we just keep an open mind and try to find ways to mitigate the negatives while still acknowledging the positives? 🤝

🤔 The whole thing seems kinda messed up. Like, I get that we need to make events sustainable and all that, but sponsoring big polluters at an event? It's just so... contradictory, you know? We're trying to save the planet, but then we go out and support people who are basically contributing to its demise 🌎💦

I mean, 22 percent lower emissions would've been a good start. And those new infrastructure plans are nice, I guess, but it's not like that's gonna make up for the fact that these sponsors could offset any carbon reductions made by the event itself 😒

And honestly, isn't this just a case of 'too little, too late'? We're already seeing the devastating effects of climate change, and then we have events like the Olympics that are supposed to be about promoting sustainability but end up perpetuating the problem 🤷‍♀️

OMG I'M SO FREAKED OUT ABOUT THIS!!! 🤯 they're gonna lose 5.5 SQ KM OF SNOWPACK?? that's insane! and it's not just about the snowpack, it's about the glacial ice melting too... like what even is left?! 🤷‍♀️ i'm all for sustainability and reducing emissions but promoting big polluters at events like the Olympics is just so wrong... like, can't they see how much of a mess they're making?! 🙄 and it's not like they're taking the right steps either... reusing existing infrastructure is cool and all, but it's just not enough to make up for the harm being done. we need real change, not just some PR stunt! 💪

This is so messed up 🤦‍♀️ #OlympicSustainabilityFail I'm literally shaking thinking about those 5.5 square kilometers of snowpack being lost... we need to rethink our priorities, fam! 💔 At least the organizers are trying with the reusing infrastructure and building fewer new venues, but it's just not enough 🤷‍♂️ We gotta think bigger picture here - climate change is a real issue and events like the Olympics can either exacerbate or help mitigate it. Can't have our cake and eat it too 🍰 #ClimateActionNow
