The Ashes 2025: Australia captain Pat Cummins out of second Test in Brisbane

Australia captain Pat Cummins remains sidelined as he continues to recover from a back injury, with the team naming an unchanged squad for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane. The 32-year-old fast bowler has not played since July and is still building towards a comeback.

Cummins was initially expected to return for the day-nighter at the Gabba, but will now miss the match as he continues to work on his fitness and bowling action. Australia have named an unchanged squad, with stand-in captain Steve Smith leading the team once again.

The decision to keep the same 14 players has been made despite Josh Hazlewood's absence due to a hamstring injury. The left-arm fast bowler was bowling in the nets in Sydney this week, but there is no indication as to when he could return.

Without Cummins and Hazlewood, Australia have the opportunity to field an unchanged attack for the pink-ball Test. Mitchell Starc took 10 wickets in the first Ashes Test in Perth, and will likely be involved in Brisbane.

The absence of Pat Cummins has given Steve Smith another chance to lead his team, but it remains to be seen how they will fare without their star bowler. The second Ashes Test is set to take place on Thursday at the Gabba, with Australia looking to build on their impressive 8-wicket win in Perth.

Aww man, can't believe Pat Cummins is still out 🤕🏏. Hopefully he'll make a swift recovery and be back to his awesome self soon! Meanwhile, I think Steve Smith's doing a great job leading the team without him 👍. Those Aussies are gonna rock Brisbane with that unchanged attack 🎸! Starc is gonna bring some serious heat 🔥... can't wait for Thursday's match ⏰. Fingers crossed they keep up the winning streak 🤞!

Ugh 🤕 gotta feel for Cummins 😔 his back injury is super frustrating 🙄 and now he's gonna miss another match 📅 hopefully he can get back soon ⏱️ would love to see him in action again 💪 meanwhile, Smith is leading the team and it'll be interesting to see how they do without their star bowler 🤔 Starc is a great option though 🔥 hope Australia can keep up the good form 🔜 gotta wait and see what happens next 📊

Ugh, can't believe Aussie cricket is just gonna roll with it w/o Cummins 🤦‍♂️ for a sec. I mean, I get it, he's still recovering and all that jazz, but this is the Ashes we're talkin' about! A bit of risk never hurt anyone... or at least not in a sporting context 😏. Still, gotta give props to Steve Smith for stepin' up as captain again 👏. Now can we please get some updates on Josh Hazlewood's hamstring injury? We need that guy back ASAP 🤞. And Mitchell Starc better bring the heat 🌡️!

can't believe australia's not taking this back injury thing seriously... pat cummins has been out for ages now & they're still gonna stick with the same squad? 🤔 it's like they're playing a long game or something, but at what cost to their team performance? 🏟️ steve smith leading again is good, but what about the team chemistry without cummins? 💭
