The Ashes: England's Ollie Pope says dealing with pressure on his place can help him perform against Australia

Pressure the Spark for England's Ollie Pope Ahead of Ashes Series Against Australia.

England batsman Ollie Pope believes that pressure to retain his place in the team has helped him prepare for the upcoming Ashes series against Australia. The 27-year-old, who averages a disappointing 15.70 against the Australians, will take on Jacob Bethell's emerging threat at No 3 in Perth this Friday.

Pope was dropped from England's Test side during their last tour of Australia in 2021/22, averaging just 11.16 runs in six innings. He was subsequently restored for the final test after a chastening series. The England vice-captain credits his experience playing international cricket for helping him to develop mental toughness.

He believes that having to deal with pressure on his place has made him more prepared for this Ashes series, stating: "I know I can deal with that and get the best out of myself at times." Pope, who averaged 35.36 in his career overall, is aware of the conversation surrounding his place in the team but acknowledges that he has to remind himself to focus on playing good cricket.

The England batsman also revealed that the experience of playing big series has helped him develop a clear understanding of how he wants to play in Australia, stating: "I've played 61 Tests now... I've got that in the bank. There are guys experiencing places like Australia for the first time and my senior spot in the team is about leaning on those guys and helping them out because I have experienced what an Ashes tour can be like."

Pope's focus will shift from individual struggles to helping his teammates as he takes on Bethell in Perth, with England set to face Australia in their first test of the five-match series.

I think Ollie Pope is being unfairly judged ๐Ÿค”... Like, 15.70 vs Aussie is still not great, but at least he's owning up to it and saying he's more prepared now ๐Ÿ’ช. And let's be real, 35.36 is a pretty solid career average ๐Ÿ˜Ž. I'm not trying to be defensive or anything, but I think Pope is getting a bit of a raw deal ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ... People need to remember that cricket is an individual sport and it's okay if he's not perfect all the time ๐Ÿ™. And honestly, who hasn't struggled with pressure at some point? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ At least Pope is using it as fuel to improve ๐Ÿ’ก. Bring on the Ashes series! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿค” gotta feel bad for ol pope.. been through some ups & downs since being dropped... but i think its good he's using that pressure to fuel his game... like, mental toughness is key in sports & all... also got to respect how humble he is about the conversation surrounding his spot in the team ๐Ÿ™... 61 tests under his belt now, that's some experience! ๐ŸŽฏ

Ugh, cricket... ๐Ÿ˜ฉ just saw that Ollie Pope is being put under pressure to perform again and now they're talking about him dropping him from the team if he doesn't step up his game against Australia ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Like, isn't he 27 already? Can't he just chill for once? ๐Ÿ˜’ And don't even get me started on this Jacob Bethell guy, new kid on the block trying to steal Pope's spot... ๐Ÿ’” I swear, cricket is just a never-ending cycle of disappointment ๐Ÿค•.

๐Ÿค” gotta say i'm more excited about Ollie Pope's mental toughness than his batting form against australia lol ๐Ÿ™ƒ anyway, it's all good that he's taking this pressure thing as a positive and using it to fuel his game... but let's not forget that the ashles series is gonna be a tough one for england regardless, no matter who plays or how well pope bats ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐Ÿฆœ

I think it's fab that Ollie Pope is taking the pressure to retain his place as a positive & has used it to focus on playing good cricket ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ. It's like when our kiddos get nervous before a big test or school event - sometimes they just need a little reminder that it's okay to make mistakes & learn from them ๐Ÿ˜Š. Pope's experience of being dropped & then restored is like getting a second chance, and I think he's learned a lot from that ๐Ÿ™. It'll be interesting to see how he bounces back against Australia this time around - fingers crossed for England! ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿ™„ Pressure is a funny thing... Ollie Pope thinks it's helped him get mentally tough for the Ashes? Like, I get it, it's a big deal being dropped and then brought back, but 15.70 against Australia is still pretty cringeworthy ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. And now he's all about reminding himself to focus on playing good cricket? It sounds like he's trying way too hard ๐Ÿคฏ. But hey, at least he's aware of the conversation surrounding his place in the team... that's more than I can say for some players who just coast through ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Still, it'll be interesting to see how he performs against Jacob Bethell this Friday ๐Ÿ‘€.

I gotta say, Ollie Pope is just trying too hard ๐Ÿค”... I mean, isn't it cool that he's been given a second chance? He needs to chill out and not think about his place in the team so much, you know? But at the same time, I get why he's got pressure - being dropped from the Test side can be tough ๐Ÿ’”. On the other hand, his experience playing big series has actually helped him develop a clear understanding of how he wants to play in Australia... or does that just mean he's overthinking things again? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Maybe he should just focus on playing good cricket and forget about all the pressure? Wait, no, maybe that's too easy for someone with his experience ๐Ÿ˜…. Ugh, I'm so confused!

im lowkey rooting for pope to make a statement this ashles series ๐Ÿคž his experience being benched last time was def a blessing in disguise tho lol he's got some big guns on his back but i think he can hold his own, esp with bethell looking all flash at no3 ๐Ÿ˜ also gotta say england's squad depth is a major plus this year - it'll be interesting to see how pope fits into the mix ๐Ÿ’ช

I got a feelin' about Ollie Pope this Ashes series ๐Ÿค”... He's been through some tough times, gettin' dropped and then comin' back strong ๐Ÿ’ช. And you know what? I think that pressure thing is actually workin' for him ๐Ÿ˜Ž. He's all about focusin' on his own game now, but also helpin' out the rest of the team ๐Ÿค. It's like he's learnin' to appreciate the bigger picture ๐ŸŒ. And that experience from playin' so many Tests is just goin' to serve him well ๐Ÿ‘... I'm rootin' for 'im to have a good series and show Australia what he's all about ๐Ÿ”ฅ!

๐Ÿค” I'm not sure about Ollie Pope being under pressure is actually a good thing for him... I mean, it sounds like he's been really anxious about his spot in the team, and that can't be easy to deal with. But at the same time, you've got to admire his mental toughness after getting dropped from the squad before.

I think what's interesting is how he's shifted his focus to being a senior leader for the team, rather than just worrying about his own game. It's like he's realized that there are guys coming up behind him who need guidance and support... that's really mature of him to take on that role. ๐Ÿ‘
