The best children's books of 2025

Several standout children's books have emerged this year, embodying diverse themes that speak to the human need for connection, justice, and freedom.

Picture books like Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's "Oh Dear, Look What I Got" offer joyous and bouncy stories about shopping trips gone awry. While more serious, Annie Booker's "The Great Bear" weaves a haunting narrative of the polar bear spirit that protects the oceans and human greed that threatens their rich life.

Illustrated books like Rashmi Sirdeshpande's "This Is Who I Am", with its softly gorgeous yet fierce portrayal of identity, celebrate the strength of children born from immigrant parents. The book juxtaposes gentle notes on the guitar with the courage and patience of freedom fighters, emphasizing the importance of self-expression and resilience.

Robert Macfarlane's poetic collaboration with Luke Adam Hawker in "Firefly" transports readers through winter darkness to a dream field illuminated by fireflies and onward to supernovae, showcasing vibrant imagery that blazes even in black and white.

In nonfiction for older children, Giselle Clarkson's "Omnibird" presents 18 species with original humor, urging young readers to see birds as complex, funny, everyday miracles.

Comics enthusiasts will delight in Neill Cameron's "Donut Squad: Take Over the World!", which chronicles a group of brave donuts battling global domination. Meanwhile, Katherine Rundell's high fantasy novel "The Poisoned King" follows Anya and Christopher on a quest for justice as they navigate mythical creatures and sinister forces.

From Bloomsbury comes Katya Balen's poignant contemporary story "Letters from the Upside", which explores the healing power of homing pigeons and human connection.

You know what's crazy? The fact that in this generation, kids are already being told it's okay to be themselves & explore their own identity ๐Ÿคฏ๐ŸŒˆ. I mean, we're talking about books like "This Is Who I Am" that tackle complex issues like immigrant parents & self-expression with such finesse and sensitivity ๐Ÿ˜Š. And let's not forget the sheer creativity of comics like "Donut Squad: Take Over the World!" ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ‘ฝ. Stats show 70% of kids in this generation are more open to discussing mental health, with 40% saying it's okay to ask for help ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿ’ฌ. What's even wilder is that these books aren't just about diverse themes, but they're also tackling serious issues like climate change ๐ŸŒŽ & social justice ๐Ÿค.

Did you know? According to a study, kids who read fiction in 3rd grade are more likely to become empathetic adults ๐Ÿ˜Š. It's no wonder why teachers are incorporating these books into their curriculum - the stats show a significant increase in empathy and kindness among students who've read them ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’–. I'm loving how the next gen of readers is being catered to with stories that reflect their own experiences & values ๐ŸŒˆ.

I'm SO EXCITED ABOUT THESE NEW CHILDREN'S BOOKS!!! ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ’– THEY'RE ALL SO DIFFERENT AND YET, THEY SHARE THIS COMMON THREAD OF HELPING KIDS FEEL CONNECTED TO THE WORLD AROUND THEM. I MEAN, WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO READ ABOUT POLAR BEARS SAVING THE OCEANS OR DONUTS TAKING OVER THE WORLD?! ๐Ÿฉ๐ŸŒŽ IT'S SO WONDERFUL TO SEE THESE STORIES CELEBRATING DIFFERENCE AND PROMOTING VALUES LIKE SELF-EXPRESSION AND RESILIENCE. I'M ALREADY ADDING "OH DEAR, LOOK WHAT I GOT" AND "THE GREAT BEAR" TO MY MUST-READ LIST ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“–

omg i love how these kids books are tackling real issues like environmentalism & social justice in a way that's relatable to young readers ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ’š it's so great to see authors celebrating diversity & representation too! ๐ŸŽ‰ "The Great Bear" gives me chills, the illustrations are stunning and the story is so hauntingly beautiful ๐Ÿ˜ i'm definitely gonna add all these books to my reading list ASAP ๐Ÿ‘€

You know, I just got back from the most random hike this weekend ๐Ÿž๏ธ. I was thinking about how my favorite book series ever is actually a bunch of different books by different authors... have you read them? It's not like it's a cohesive story or anything, but each one has its own vibe and feels connected in its own way ๐Ÿค”. Anyway, back to the kids' books โ€“ I mean, who doesn't love a good bear story? ๐Ÿป But seriously, I think what I loved most about this list was how each book celebrated something different... like self-expression and resilience! It's so important for kids (and us adults too) to have that kind of confidence in themselves ๐Ÿ’–. Oh, and has anyone else ever seen a firefly light up the night sky? ๐ŸŒƒ

omg i just read about these amazing books ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘€ and i'm totally geeked out ๐Ÿคช over how diverse and beautiful they are ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’– especially the ones that focus on self-expression, identity, and social justice ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’ช like "This Is Who I Am" it's so gorgeous โœจ and "The Poisoned King" is a must-read for anyone who loves fantasy ๐Ÿงšโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฎ i also love how some of these books use humor to tackle heavy topics like in "Omnibird" ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ˜‚ but what really stands out to me is the way these authors are using their platforms to celebrate individuality and creativity ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’ซ

I donโ€™t usually comment but I'm totally obsessed with these kids books this year ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽ‰. Like, have you read "The Great Bear" by Annie Booker? It's so beautifully written it gives me chills every time I flip through the pages ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’”. And the themes of identity and self-expression in "This Is Who I Am" are so important for kids growing up with immigrant parents ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐ŸŽถ. The way Rashmi Sirdeshpande portrays their strength and resilience is truly inspiring ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ.

And can we talk about Giselle Clarkson's "Omnibird"? I'm not even a bird person but that book had me laughing out loud ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ˜‚. It's amazing how she uses humor to show us just how cool and complex birds are ๐ŸŒŸ. And the comics stuff? Neill Cameron's "Donut Squad" is so fun it makes me want to join the donut squad myself ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ‘€.

I love that all these books tackle big themes in a way that's accessible to kids, without being too heavy or preachy ๐Ÿค. It's like they're speaking straight to our hearts and minds โค๏ธ.

๐Ÿ“š I'm so nostalgic when it comes to kids' books, you know? ๐Ÿคฏ Remember when we used to spend hours on rainy days cozied up with our favorite book series like "The Magic Tree House" or "Corduroy"? ๐Ÿ˜Š Nowadays, it seems like everyone's got a diverse theme and whatnot... don't get me wrong, I love how inclusive the new books are! ๐ŸŒˆ But sometimes I just wanna grab a worn-out copy of "Where the Wild Things Are" and have a good ol' fashioned storytime with my nieces ๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿป. Still, these new picture book authors like Annie Booker are giving me LIFE! ๐Ÿ˜ That polar bear spirit in "The Great Bear"... *chills*. And I love how Rashmi Sirdeshpande's "This Is Who I Am" celebrates identity and self-expression โ€“ it's like a big ol' hug for kids born from immigrant parents ๐Ÿค—. Can we go back to having only two genres, though? Like, before the 2000s when comics were just comic books? ๐Ÿคช Ah, but I guess that's just me reminiscing...

๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’• these books sound like really cool stuff, i'm not usually one for reading kids' books but some of the ones mentioned here are actually looking pretty interesting... i mean, who wouldn't want to read about a group of brave donuts battling global domination? ๐Ÿ˜‚ and that 'letters from the upside' one sounds kinda deep, i'll have to check it out. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ’ญ

I'm soooo excited to see these awesome books coming out this year ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ“š! It's amazing to see so many diverse themes that speak to our hearts โค๏ธ, like connection, justice, and freedom ๐ŸŒˆ. Picture books like "Oh Dear, Look What I Got" are giving me all the feels ๐Ÿ˜‚, while "The Great Bear" is giving me major chills โ„๏ธ. And can we talk about Rashmi's book? It's so beautifully powerful ๐Ÿ’– and reminds us of our strength in being ourselves ๐ŸŒŸ.

I also love Robert Macfarlane's "Firefly" - it's like a dream come true โœจ! And Giselle Clarkson's "Omnibird" is making me laugh out loud ๐Ÿ˜‚, while Neill Cameron's "Donut Squad" has me hooked ๐Ÿฉ. Katya Balen's "Letters from the Upside" is giving me all the feels again โค๏ธ, and I'm so excited to dive into Katherine Rundell's high fantasy novel ๐Ÿ“š.

These books are showing us that we're not alone in this crazy world ๐ŸŒŽ, and they're reminding us of our power to make a difference ๐Ÿ’ช. Keep on reading, everyone! ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ‘
