The four astronauts NASA picked for the first crewed moon mission in 50 years | CNN

Four astronauts, including three NASA crew members and one from the Canadian Space Agency, have been selected for the first crewed mission to the moon in nearly five decades. The Artemis II mission is slated to launch in November 2024, with a journey expected to take around 10 days.

Commander Reid Wiseman, 47, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will lead the mission aboard the Orion spacecraft. Wiseman has previously flown to space, spending 165 days on the International Space Station in 2014. He served as chief of the astronaut office before stepping down last year.

Also part of the crew is Victor Glover, 46, a naval aviator who piloted SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft and spent nearly six months aboard the ISS in 2021. Glover holds over 3,000 flight hours across more than 40 aircraft.

Christina Koch, 44, a veteran spacewalker with six EVA credits under her belt, including the first all-female spacewalk in 2019. Koch holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and has spent over 328 days in space.

Lastly, Jeremy Hansen, 47, a fighter pilot from the Canadian Space Agency, will be the first Canadian to venture into deep space. Hansen was selected as an astronaut in 2009 and recently became the first Canadian to lead training for a new class of NASA astronauts.

Glover reflected on the mission's significance, stating it marks "the next step in the journey that will get humanity to Mars." The Artemis II crew will embark on a historic lunar flyby, building momentum for the upcoming Artemis III mission, which aims to put the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface.

Yaaas, I'm so hyped about this news!!! πŸš€πŸ‘½ First crewed mission to the moon in almost 50 years? That's insane! The fact that we've got a diverse team leading the way is just amazing. Commander Wiseman and Christina Koch are total rockstars for their spacewalk skills and time spent in space. And Jeremy Hansen getting to be the first Canadian in deep space is like, a dream come true 🀩. This mission is gonna pave the way for us to finally set foot on Mars (or at least send a woman and person of color there). The fact that Glover's all about this being the next step towards greatness just gets me pumped up! 10 days in space? That's like, an eternity... but I'm sure they'll be fine πŸ˜‰. Can't wait to see these astronauts crush it on Artemis II πŸ’ͺ

Wow πŸš€πŸ‘½ Interesting that they're going back to the moon after so long, it's like we've been in a space coma or something 😴! 10-day journey is pretty crazy too, I mean, who knew space travel was still gonna be that fast? πŸ’¨ The fact that there's a Canadian on this mission is also cool, Jeremy Hansen seems like an awesome pilot dude 🀠. And it's dope that they're building momentum for the Mars mission, that's like, the ultimate goal right? πŸš€πŸ‘Š

Wow πŸš€πŸ‘½ - I'm so hyped about this! Can't believe we're finally getting back to the moon after all these years. The fact that there's a diverse crew with so much experience is really inspiring. I mean, six EVA credits? That's crazy! πŸ’₯ And Jeremy Hansen being the first Canadian in deep space is awesome πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦. This mission feels like a big step towards getting humanity to Mars, and I'm all about that intergalactic adventure πŸ”œ

πŸš€ So this is what we need, more astronauts πŸ€”? I mean, it's about time we got some leadership from a space agency that actually has some experience πŸ‘. I'm all for pushing humanity forward, but let's not forget where we're going with this Artemis II mission πŸ•°οΈ. It's just a lunar flyby, what does that really prove? We need concrete steps towards Mars, not just a fancy space taxi ride πŸš—.

And what about the cost? I mean, we're talking about a 10-day journey to the moon on an Orion spacecraft πŸ’Έ. That's some serious taxpayer cash being thrown around πŸ€‘. How are we going to justify this expense when there are still pressing issues here on Earth? Priorities, people! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I gotta say, it's amazing to see us taking steps towards going back to the moon πŸŒ•! I mean, 10-day trip is a pretty significant undertaking, but the fact that we're doing it with a diverse crew is what gets me most excited 🀝. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen are all rockstars in their own right, and it's awesome to see them pushing the boundaries of space travel πŸ‘½.

It's also heartening to know that this mission marks a significant step towards Mars πŸš€. I'm not getting any younger (I'm now 75 πŸ™ƒ), but if we're gonna make humanity a multi-planetary species, we gotta start moving in the right direction!

One thing that's been on my mind lately is how awesome it'll be to see the next gen of space explorers taking over from people like us old-timers 😊. The fact that Jeremy Hansen was leading training for new NASA astronauts just shows you that the spirit of exploration and discovery is alive and well πŸ”₯!

Ugh, so excited for the crew, but Orion spacecraft is still gonna be like a glorified space toilet πŸš½πŸ’¨. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to launch humans into space with a vehicle that's basically just a fancy bucket? And don't even get me started on the whole "deep space" thing, it's just a fancy way of saying they're gonna be stuck in space for 10 days without any decent coffee πŸ€―β˜•οΈ. And what's up with the lack of transparency on the mission's timeline and budget? NASA always seems to keep us guessing πŸ™„πŸ•°οΈ. Can't wait for Artemis III though, hopefully they'll finally get the lunar landing right πŸ‘πŸ’«

πŸš€ I'm hyped about this mission, but also kinda concerned πŸ€”... We've been talking about going back to the moon for ages, and it's great that we finally have a crew ready, but 10 days is still a looong time for space travel πŸ•°οΈ. What if something goes wrong? I mean, we're basically sending humans into a vacuum without knowing what might happen next... Fingers crossed everything checks out! πŸ‘

can you believe we're actually gonna see humans set foot on the moon again? πŸš€ it's crazy how much progress we've made in just a few years - they're already talking about Mars missions now! i remember when I was a kid, watching those old moon landing videos with my dad, and now we're like "oh yeah, that's so 2009". but seriously, have you seen the crew selected for this mission? wow, they all have such impressive backgrounds and skills... commander wiseman is like a total rockstar, having flown to space before and being a test pilot or whatever. and can you imagine christina koch doing an all-female spacewalk back in 2019? what a moment! 🀩 i'm kinda hyped for this mission, but also a bit nervous - 10 days in space is still a looong time to be cooped up up there...

I'm thinking the Artemis II mission is going to be huge πŸš€! Having such an experienced team like Commander Wiseman and Victor Glover on board will definitely make it a success. I mean, 3,000 flight hours across over 40 aircraft? That's crazy! And Christina Koch's spacewalk record is insane πŸ’ͺ. It'll be great to see Jeremy Hansen, the first Canadian in deep space, representing his country πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦. I'm also excited about the historic lunar flyby and setting up for Artemis III, which could change the game for getting humans to Mars. November 2024 can't come soon enough!

ugh its gonna be 10 days up there they gotta pack some decent snacks in that Orion thing 🀣 i mean what if they get space rations sickness ? cant imagine christina koch doing a 6eva out there for THAT long she must be made of space steel lol πŸš€ anyway glad canadian jeremy hansen is reppin the north its about time we see some canadian space action πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

πŸš€πŸ˜Š I'm so stoked to hear about this crew! They're literally going to be walking on moonbeams πŸŒ•! I mean, Commander Wiseman's got some serious experience under his belt - 165 days in space? πŸ’₯ That's crazy! And Victor Glover's got those impressive flight hours too 🚁. But what really gets me excited is that Christina Koch is part of the crew... her spacewalk skills are on point πŸ”©! It's all about building momentum for that next mission to Mars, and I'm rooting for it πŸ’«. The fact that Jeremy Hansen's leading training for new astronauts is a big deal too 🎯 - Canadian pride is everything! November 2024 can't come soon enough πŸ•°οΈ!

πŸš€πŸ˜ This is so cool! I'm living for the fact that we're actually getting back to the moon in a big way. The crew looks amazing too - all these experienced astronauts who have flown to space multiple times, it's like a dream team πŸ’ͺ. And Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency is gonna be the first Canuck in deep space πŸŽ‰. It's crazy how Glover sees this mission as a step towards Mars, and I'm hoping they can make that happen soon too πŸ”œ. The thought of a woman and person of color on the lunar surface by 2025 is giving me chills πŸ’₯. Bring it on!

πŸš€πŸ‘¨β€πŸš€ can't believe it's been like 5 decades since we last had humans on the moon πŸ•°οΈ, now we're about to get that update with this Artemis II mission! πŸŽ‰ I'm loving the crew they've got selected, all super talented and experienced in their own right πŸ’ͺ. Commander Wiseman leading the charge makes sense, he's got the skills from his naval days + space experience πŸš€πŸ’₯. Can't wait to see what Glover & Koch bring to the table too, those spacewalks are legendary πŸ”©πŸ’«! And Jeremy Hansen getting the nod as Canada's first deep space explorer? πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Yessss! This is gonna be a wild ride to Mars πŸš€πŸ‘½

πŸš€ I'm so stoked to see these astronauts being chosen for the Artemis II mission! It's been ages since we've had a crewed mission to the moon πŸŒ•, and it's awesome that we're finally getting back to doing this.

Commander Reid Wiseman is an amazing leader, having flown to space before and served as chief of the astronaut office 🚁. And Victor Glover, man, he's got some serious flight hours under his belt - 3,000+ hours across 40 aircraft? That's crazy! 😲 Christina Koch is a total rockstar too, with six EVA credits and holding that record for longest single spaceflight by a woman πŸ’ͺ.

But what really gets me excited is the significance of this mission πŸ€”. It's not just about going to the moon; it's about building momentum for Mars πŸš€! And with an all-female crew on Artemis III, we're taking another giant leap towards diversity in space exploration πŸ‘©β€πŸš€.

What I love most is that these astronauts are representing different nations and backgrounds - Commander Wiseman from NASA, Victor Glover from SpaceX, Christina Koch from... well, no country mentioned πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦. It's amazing to see how international cooperation can come together for a shared goal of space exploration 🌎.

Overall, I think we're on the cusp of something huge here πŸš€. With these astronauts leading the charge, I have no doubt that Artemis II is going to be an unforgettable mission πŸ˜„!
