I gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed by Kate Pickett's new book
. I mean, I get where she's coming from - we need to tackle inequality and all that jazz. But the thing is, her data doesn't quite add up, you know? Like, if GDP growth has been sluggish since 2010, how can we say the UK is a worse place to live just because of rising child poverty and stuff? It feels like she's cherry-picking stats
.
And don't even get me started on her UBI ideas
. I mean, I'm all for exploring new ways to address inequality, but let's not oversell the benefits, okay? Small-scale studies just aren't gonna cut it if we wanna make real progress
.
I also gotta say, her conclusion about citizen juries feels kinda...off
. Like, what exactly does that entail? How are we supposed to implement this in practice? It's all well and good to talk the talk, but let's get down to business, you know?
Overall, I think The Good Society is a nice try, but it feels like Pickett's just scratching the surface
. We need more nuance, more depth, more evidence-driven policies if we wanna build a better future
.
