The Guardian view on Ukraine peace talks: Putin is taking Trump for another ride on the Kremlin carousel | Editorial

US President Donald Trump is being taken for another ride on Vladimir Putin's "carousel" of diplomatic tricks. The Russia expert Mark Galeotti pointed out that as long as hostilities continue, Moscow will continue to wield leverage over Ukraine - a lever it would gladly use if the current ceasefire holds but talks begin.

Putin has no interest in negotiating with Ukraine on equal terms; he wants the country to surrender its sovereignty and become part of Moscow's sphere of influence. He doesn't care how that happens - through military force or by imposing a deal on Ukraine that Trump himself could broker.

The US-Russian peace plan being discussed, which demands an end to fighting in exchange for talks over territory, is laughable given Putin's stance on this issue. The Kremlin has consistently resisted this approach and instead seeks to maintain its leverage over Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy faces a crisis after his chief of staff Andriy Yermak was placed under investigation by anti-corruption authorities - an unhelpful development at a critical juncture. It's even less likely that Putin will make concessions now than he did previously.

Trump is once again being led down the garden path, with his own diplomatic vanity and desire to do business with Russia and Zelenskyy playing into Putin's hands. After four years of resistance by Ukraine, it must not be bullied into a cynical carve-up.

However, Europe still has a role to play in this situation. As long as Russia continues to advance in eastern Ukraine, Europe must demonstrate its commitment to supporting Kyiv. Sending financial and military aid to Ukraine is crucial - whether through loans from the EU budget or member states themselves.

It's also essential for European leaders to signal their resolute support for a just peace in Ukraine, sending a clear message that they will not let Putin get away with bullying a small country. As long as Trump remains on this merry-go-round of diplomacy, Ukraine needs urgent backing - not from the Kremlin but from its allies.

๐Ÿค” I'm getting a bad feeling about this situation... Trump's diplomatic efforts seem like just another pawn in Putin's game of cat and mouse. ๐ŸฆŠ The US-Russian peace plan sounds like just what Putin wants โ€“ to keep Ukraine on the hook, unable to make any real progress. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy is dealing with his own crisis and needs all the support he can get from Europe right now. ๐Ÿค We need to put our money (and military aid) where our mouth is, but I'm not holding my breath that Trump will keep Ukraine's back. ๐Ÿ˜ It's time for European leaders to step up and show Putin what we're really made of โ€“ a united front against his bullying tactics! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿคฏ I'm telling you, Trump is getting played again ๐Ÿ˜‚. Putin's got him wrapped around his finger like a puppet on a string ๐ŸŽธ. The US-Russian peace plan sounds like a joke to me โ€“ it's just a way for Putin to get what he wants without really giving anything in return ๐Ÿค‘.

And Ukraine is caught in the middle, struggling with corruption and internal issues while Putin pulls the strings from behind the scenes ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ. We need European leaders to step up and show some real support for Kyiv โ€“ not just empty words, but actual action ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's like, Trump thinks he's making progress, but really he's just giving Putin an excuse to keep pushing Ukraine around ๐Ÿ˜’. And now with Yermak under investigation, it's even more crucial that Europe shows its commitment to backing Ukraine ๐Ÿค. We can't let Putin bully them into getting a bad deal โ€“ we need to stand up for what's right and support our allies ๐Ÿ’•.

I'm kinda worried about Trump's deal-making skills ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘€... he's been led down this garden path too many times before and it never ends well for Ukraine ๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿ’”. Russia's just playing Putin on repeat, using Trump to get what they want without actually negotiating ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

But at the same time, I think Europe needs to step up its game too ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ’ช... sending aid and showing support is one thing but it also means being firm on Russia's bullying ways ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. We can't let Putin push Ukraine around anymore, that's just not cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž.

I'm also kinda curious about how Trump's "peace plan" was even brokering this ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ... did he really think Putin would just agree to some deal without strings attached? Not exactly the most diplomatic guy, if you ask me ๐Ÿ™ƒ.

I donโ€™t usually comment but... I think itโ€™s super concerning what's going down in Ukraine right now ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ. It feels like no matter how hard Ukraine fights for their independence, Putin just keeps on pushing and playing Trump for a fool. Like, come on man! Can't they see he's just using them to get ahead? ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™‚๏ธ

I also donโ€™t know why we need the US and EU to keep sending aid to Ukraine when it feels like Putin is already getting what he wants from Trump ๐Ÿ˜”. I mean, I guess it's not like they can just sit back and watch as Ukraine gets taken over by Russia ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

But honestly, if Europe doesnโ€™t step up now, itโ€™s going to be a disaster for Ukraine and the whole region ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. We need to show Putin that we wonโ€™t stand for him bullying around small countries, or else he'll just keep on doing whatever he wants ๐Ÿ‘Š

Ugh, can you believe how far Trump's gotten pulled into Putin's web of deceit ๐Ÿ˜’? I mean, I get it, he wants to do business and make a deal, but come on, it's like he's got his eyes glued shut when it comes to Russia ๐Ÿ™„. And now Ukraine is paying the price, with their president having to deal with some major drama from within ๐Ÿคฏ. It's so frustrating!

I also think Europe needs to step up and show its support for Ukraine, you know? We can't just sit back and let Putin bully them around ๐Ÿ˜ก. We need to send a clear message that we're not going to stand for it ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. The fact that the US-Russian peace plan is so laughable is just icing on the cake ๐Ÿฐ.

I'm all for Ukraine getting support, but it needs to come from us, the EU and other allies ๐Ÿ’ช. We can't rely on Trump to get them out of this mess ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's time for some real leadership and a strong stance against Putin's aggression ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

.. I think we can all learn from Donald Trump's diplomatic dance with Putin here ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿ˜…. The truth is, if you're trying to make a deal with someone who doesn't want to negotiate on equal terms, it's like playing a game of musical chairs โ€“ you'll just get stuck in the same old rhythm forever ๐Ÿ’”.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is facing its own crisis and needs some real backing from its allies ๐Ÿค. This whole situation reminds me that sometimes, all we can do is support those who are standing up for what they believe in โค๏ธ. And trust me, Europe, you've got to show your commitment to Kyiv right now ๐Ÿ’ช. It's not about being perfect; it's about being present and making a difference ๐ŸŒŸ.

๐Ÿ˜’ I'm so tired of Trump getting played like a fiddle by Putin. This whole US-Russian peace plan thing is just laughable ๐Ÿคฃ. I mean, come on, Trump really thinks he's gonna get Russia to back down over Ukraine? Please. Putin wants that country in his pocket and he'll stop at nothing to get it. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy is struggling to stay afloat with his chief of staff under investigation... this is just a disaster waiting to happen ๐Ÿšจ.

And you're right, Europe needs to step up their game here. We can't let Putin bully Ukraine around anymore. We need to show them that we're serious about supporting Kyiv and standing up to Russia's aggression. Financial aid is just the tip of the iceberg - we need to be willing to take a stand and make some noise ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.

It's time for Trump to wake up and stop playing this dumb game with Putin. And it's time for Europe to show some real backbone. We can't let Ukraine down right now ๐Ÿ˜ฉ.

๐Ÿ˜ฉ Trump is literally being taken to the cleaners by Putin ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Can't believe how weak he is with these diplomatic moves ๐Ÿ˜ด. Meanwhile, Ukraine's got a major crisis on their hands with their chief of staff under investigation ๐Ÿšจ. Not what they need right now. Europe needs to step up and show some backbone ๐Ÿ‘Š, not just send empty promises ๐Ÿ’ธ. We can't keep letting Putin bully the little guy without standing up for them. It's getting old ๐Ÿ˜’.

๐Ÿค” This is getting too familiar for me... another round of diplomatic back-and-forth where Russia's got the upper hand ๐Ÿ”„. I'm worried that we're going to see more of Putin's " Carousel" of tricks, with Ukraine caught in the middle โฐ.

I think Trump needs to be more realistic about what he can achieve here - it's not gonna happen overnight ๐Ÿ’จ. Meanwhile, Europe has a crucial role to play in backing Ukraine financially and militarily ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ. We can't let Putin get away with bullying a small country without consequences ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

What really concerns me is that Ukrainian President Zelenskyy might be losing ground right now โšก๏ธ. Losing his chief of staff under investigation isn't helping matters, and I don't think Putin's gonna make any concessions without being forced to ๐Ÿค‘.

It's time for Europe to step up and show some serious backing for Ukraine ๐Ÿ”’. We can't afford to let our guard down in this situation ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

omg u think trump is actually going to help russia? ๐Ÿคฃ i mean i know he's all about making deals and stuff but russia is like a total scam artist ๐Ÿ˜‚ and putin is soooo not down for equal terms lol what's the point of even having talks if putin just wants to own ukraine anyway?

so like whats going on with ukraine right now? i feel bad for zelenskyy and his staff, especially yermak ๐Ÿค• thats some major drama. and yeah eu needs to step up their game too, sending aid is super important but we also need to stand strong against russia's bullying ๐Ÿ˜’

i wonder if trump even knows what he's getting himself into... or does he just not care ๐Ÿค‘ anyway, i guess it's all about the politics now ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿค” I'm kinda worried about what's happening in Ukraine right now. It sounds like things are only getting worse for them, with their chief of staff under investigation and Trump's peace plan basically worthless ๐Ÿšฎ. But on a silver lining kinda thing, it's clear that Europe still has a big role to play here ๐Ÿ‘ฅ! We should be sending all sorts of aid to Ukraine, from loans to military support ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ”ซ. And let's be real, if we want to help them out, we gotta make sure Putin knows we're not messing around ๐Ÿ˜. We can't just stand by and let him bully a small country - that'd be super weird ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. So yeah, it's definitely time for Europe to step up and show its support for Ukraine ๐Ÿ’ช!

OMG, can you believe this? ๐Ÿคฏ Trump is getting played again by Putin and it's like, super frustrating! ๐Ÿ™„ I mean, come on, Russia doesn't want to negotiate on equal terms, they just wanna take over Ukraine and Trump is just going along with it. ๐Ÿ˜’ And now Yermak gets investigated in Ukraine and it's like, total chaos. ๐Ÿคฏ But you know what the biggest problem is? The EU and other European countries aren't doing enough to support Ukraine! ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ We need to send more aid, not loans that might get stuck in bureaucratic red tape, and we need to stand up to Putin and show him that we won't let him bully a small country. ๐ŸŒŸ If Trump wants to do business with Russia, he needs to be careful what he wishes for because Putin's not gonna hold back. ๐Ÿšจ We gotta support Ukraine now more than ever! ๐Ÿ’ช

ugh dont think trump has any idea whats going on ๐Ÿ™„... always playing into putins hands like some sort of pawn in a giant game of russia vs usa chess ๐Ÿคฏ meanwhile zelensky is struggling over here and eu needs to step up their support game โš ๏ธ cant let putin bully ukranian gov without anyone pushing back ๐Ÿ’ช europe needs to show they care more about zelenskyy than trump's ego ๐Ÿ™
