The Highgate Vampire review – stranger-than-fiction events make for biting comedy

A Comedic Reimagining of London's Infamous Vampire Sighting

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a peculiar phenomenon occurred in north London, specifically around Highgate cemetery. The area was plagued by alleged vampire sightings, exorcisms, and even grave desecrations, drawing the attention of local authorities. Two men, David Farrant and Sean Manchester, decided to take matters into their own hands, each attempting to uncover the truth behind the mysterious happenings.

The film "The Highgate Vampire" cleverly reimagines this bizarre incident as a comedy, with Patrick Sheffield (Alexander Knott) playing a bishop by day and vampire hunter by night, and Daniel Farringdon (James Demain) portraying a tobacconist turned vampire slayer. The show's format, presented as a lecture, is skillfully subverted as the two men engage in a heated competition to be the first to vanquish the alleged vampire.

The film's tone is surprisingly sweet, with a meta-theatrical approach that allows for plenty of comedic moments. The actors deliver charming performances, although the show could benefit from sharper writing and scarier moments to balance out its lighthearted humor. Despite this, "The Highgate Vampire" provides an entertaining alternative to traditional Christmas ghost stories.

One can't help but wonder what would make this production even more unsettling as a site-specific promenade show, perhaps by incorporating the eerie atmosphere of the real-life Highgate cemetery. Nevertheless, for now, "The Highgate Vampire" serves as a delightful and amusing take on a bizarre piece of London's history.

omg can u believe they're making a comedy outta this vampire stuff?? its literally hilarious imagine these two dudes trying to hunt down some vampire with a bunch of bizzare methods lol but seriously, i love how the show pokes fun at itself like a meta-theatrical thing and alexander knott's character sounds so extra . idk about the writing tho maybe they could've added more tension or scares 2 balance it out but overall its def worth a watch

I gotta say, I'm intrigued by this reimagining of the whole vampire sighting thing in London 🤔. It sounds like a pretty wild story to begin with, but turning it into a comedy is genius 🎉. I love how they're poking fun at the over-the-top performances and the whole "hunt for the vampire" vibe. And I agree, sharper writing would be nice to balance out the lighthearted humor 😊. But you know what? This just makes me want to watch it even more 📺! Maybe a site-specific promenade show could really take it to the next level and make it feel super immersive and spooky 😱. Would've loved to see that!

idk why ppl are hyped about this new film its just some dudes doing vampire hunting thingy with all the seriousness 2nded lol but u know wot would make it even better? if they actually filmed in highgate cemetery rn itd be like, super creepy n stuff 🌑

🤔 I'm really fascinated by how they've taken this supposedly spooky vampire sighting from the 60s/70s and turned it into a comedy. It's like, what's more hilarious than two dudes trying to outdo each other as vampire hunters? The fact that they're presented in a lecture format is just genius - it's like they're sitting there, reading you this whole story, while also trying to catch the "vampire".

And I have to say, I love how the show pokes fun at itself. Like, it knows it's absurd and leans into it. The actors are great too, but what would've made it even better is if they'd cranked up the scares a notch - you know, to balance out the laughs. But overall, it's a fun twist on a weird bit of history. 🎃 I can see why they wanted to do it as a site-specific show at Highgate cemetery - that place already has such an eerie vibe going on. Maybe next time, we'll get a "scary" version 😏

omg, i just watched this thing about highgate cemetery vampires 🤣 it's like they took every spooky london legend and mashed them all together into one wacky comedy show! the whole "bishops by day, vampire hunters by night" thing is so ridiculous but in a good way? 😂 it's actually kind of refreshing to see something that's not trying to be too scary or intense. and i love how they subverted the whole lecture format thing 📚👀 it's like they're poking fun at all the "expert" vampire hunters out there. but yeah, maybe next time they could add some more jump scares or creepy moments to balance out the laughs... otherwise, it's just a really fun and quirky take on london's weird past 💖

omg i was like 10 when this whole highgate vampire thing went down 🤣 my friends and i would make these hilarious 'vampire slayin'' jokes and now theres a film about it? lol what if they did that promenade show at highgate cemetery tho it'd give me chills just walking through the real place where all that stuff supposedly happened 😱

🤔 I'm fascinated by how this reimagining of the infamous vampire sighting is turned into a comedy - it's almost like they're poking fun at our collective obsession with supernatural tales. The way the film's tone balances humor with some genuine eeriness feels quite clever, but I wish there was more depth to the narrative beyond just comedic moments 📺. Still, as an alternative to traditional Christmas ghost stories, "The Highgate Vampire" is a great find - I'd love to see how it would fare as a site-specific promenade show in its original setting 🌳

omg i loved this reimagining of the highgate vampire sighting 🤣 it's so funny how they turned it into a comedy! the actors are super cute and their performances are great, especially the part where they're all like 'who's gonna kill the vampire first?' lol. but yeah, maybe if they added some scarier moments it would've been even more entertaining? 🎃 still, i loved the meta-theatrical approach and the way they subverted the lecture format. and can you imagine doing a site-specific promenade show with that eerie highgate cemetery atmosphere?? shivers down my spine just thinking about it! 😱👻

I gotta say, I'm kinda meh about this whole vampire thing. I mean, it was just some weirdos causing trouble in the '60s, but Hollywood has to make it into a comedy? 🤷‍♂️ It's like they're trying to suck the scare outta the story (get it?). I'd love to see them take a darker approach and actually tap into the eerie atmosphere of that cemetery. Maybe then we can get some real chills outta this thing. Still, if you're in the mood for something light-hearted and fun, "The Highgate Vampire" might be worth checking out... but don't expect me to be binge-watching it anytime soon 😒

🙃 I just watched this comedy thingy about vampires in London and it was actually kinda funny 🤣! The way they're trying to figure out if the vampire exists or not is pretty relatable, you know? Like, we've all been there with our online theories 😂. But what's really cool is how they take this weird historical event and turn it into a fun story. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a bishop and a tobacconist team up to save the day? 🧛‍♂️👮‍♂️ It might not be scary, but it's definitely entertaining! And I love how they did this meta-theatrical thing where they talk about the show itself – genius! 👏

Wow 😂👻 this is so wild! I mean who knew vampire hunting in london could be funny? Interesting how they turned it into a comedy show, really adds to the campy vibe of the whole thing 🤣

omg u guys I'm totes Team Farrant 🤣 the way he's trying to expose the truth behind those vampire sightings is soooo relatable lol and Daniel's transformation from tobacconist to vampire slayer is EVERYTHING 💉🔥 I mean, I know it's a bit of a farce but it's still really entertaining to watch especially if u r into spooky comedies 🎃 the only thing that'd make it even better is if they did a sequel and the vampire came back for revenge 😂 anyway, I'm totally here for this film 👻

omg u guys i just watched this movie "the highgate vampire" and it's literally so funny!!! 🤣 i mean the whole thing is just a big joke but at the same time its kinda eerie & dark lol what if they took it to a real life setting tho like the actual highgate cemetery?? that would be insane 😱 i dont think im scared of vampires anymore but i do wish the writing was better bc its like theyre missing some major scariness moments 🤔 still tho its so entertaining u shd def check it out 👍

Ugh, I just watched this thing and I'm so torn 🤯! On one hand, I love how they're like "let's take the weirdness of that Highgate vampire story and turn it into a comedy" 😂. It's like they're poking fun at the whole idea of vampires being all serious and dark, and instead just embracing the absurdity. And Alexander Knott as the bishop-vampire-hunter is literally perfect 🤣.

But on the other hand, I feel like it's missing something... a bit more edge, you know? It's so lighthearted and sugary sweet that it feels like they're not really committing to being scary or unsettling. Like, what even happened to the vampire? 🤔 And don't even get me started on how short the episodes are - it felt like we were just getting warmed up before everything wrapped up too fast 💨.

Still, I gotta give credit where credit is due... this thing is so charming and entertaining that I'm willing to forgive its lack of bite 😊. Maybe if they made a site-specific version with all the creepy Highgate vibes, it'd be more my speed 🎃.

This whole thing is like the government trying to spin a narrative - they create this weird incident and then let people try to figure out what really happened 🤔. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we've got some mysterious occurrences here, but you try to solve them." And then two guys come along, David and Sean, and they're like the special task force trying to uncover the truth 🔍. But let's be real, who are these people? Why should we care about a bunch of vampire sightings in Highgate cemetery? It's just another example of how politicians love to create controversy where there isn't any 📰. I mean, what if they actually did find some evidence of vampires or something crazy like that? Would we see it on the news or would it be swept under the rug? 🤷‍♂️

I'm intrigued by how "The Highgate Vampire" is turning a dark chapter in London's history into a laugh-out-loud comedy 🤣. I think it's awesome that they're playing with the idea of the supernatural and poking fun at our expectations, but what really got me was the commentary on the ridiculousness of the whole vampire hunting scene. It feels like they're saying, "Hey, we know this is just a bunch of nonsense, let's have some fun with it." 🎉 But, as you said, adding some scarier moments would've taken it to the next level 😅. Still, I'm here for the lighthearted take on history – it's like they're saying, "Hey, even spooky stuff can be silly if we look at it in a different way" 🕷️.

I think this reimagining is actually kinda cheesy 🤪, but at the same time, it's kinda brilliant? Like, who wouldn't want to see a bishop turned vampire hunter in a silly comedy? The actors are so charming, though, it's hard not to get sucked into their performances. But, oh man, I could totally see how sharper writing and scarier moments would make this show even better 🤒, you know? And yeah, having the actual Highgate cemetery setting would be super spooky and atmospheric... but also kinda weird? Can we say it's both funny and creepy at the same time, then?

🤣 I gotta say, reimagining those old vampire sightings as a comedy is just genius! The fact that they turned it into a competition between the two main characters is so funny 🤦‍♂️. And I love how they play with the format of the show, like turning a lecture into a comedy 😂. It's like they're poking fun at ourselves for getting too caught up in all that spooky stuff. But at the same time, it still manages to tap into that eerie atmosphere of Highgate cemetery, which is just so cool 🌲. The only thing that would've made it even better was if they'd added a bit more edge to the writing and some scarier moments to balance out the laughs 😅. Still, as it stands, "The Highgate Vampire" is a hoot, and I'm all for it! 👍
