‘The New Big 5’: Wildlife photography book turns the lens on animals at risk | CNN

A new generation of wildlife enthusiasts is being called upon to join a global movement to protect endangered species. British photographer Graeme Green has spearheaded this initiative with his "New Big 5" project, which aims to raise awareness and drive action on the issues threatening wildlife.

Originally coined by trophy hunters in Africa, the term "Big Five" referred to the most challenging animals to hunt and kill - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo. However, for Green, this term now represents a new era of conservation efforts that prioritize photography as a tool for change.

In 2021, over 50,000 people worldwide voted on which five species they would most like to photograph or see in the wild. The winner was chosen based on popular vote, and the resulting quintet - elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger - is considered an iconic representation of animals at risk.

The "New Big 5" project has culminated in a groundbreaking photography book featuring stunning images from renowned wildlife photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. Additionally, essays by influential conservationists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu emphasize the urgent need for collective action to protect these animals and their habitats.

Climate change, poaching, pollution, and habitat loss are among the pressing issues threatening the survival of many species. The "New Big 5" project seeks to not only highlight the beauty and majesty of these animals but also to inspire a global response to address the root causes of these crises.

Green's vision is to harness the power of photography as a catalyst for change, encouraging people to care about wildlife and take action to protect it. The "New Big 5" book serves as a powerful reminder of what we stand to lose if we fail to act, while also offering hope and solutions through stories of rewilding and indigenous communities' contributions to conservation.

Through this ambitious project, Graeme Green has proven that even the most iconic images can be a potent force for good. The "New Big 5" photography book is now available, offering readers a glimpse into the world of these incredible animals and a call to join the fight to protect them for generations to come.

Ugh, another species on the brink of extinction 🐯😩 just makes me wanna sit here and scroll through my doomscroller feed all day... I mean, what's up with climate change tho? It's like we're watching these animals go extinct in real-time and it's soooo not gonna be pretty when they're gone 🌎💔. I know the "New Big 5" project is trying to raise awareness and all that jazz, but let's be real, we need more than just a bunch of Instagram-worthy pics to save these guys... 💥

THE "NEW BIG 5" PROJECT IS TRULY INSPIRING!!! 🌟 IT'S AMAZING TO SEE HOW PHOTOGRAPHY CAN BE USED AS A TOOL FOR CONSERVATION AND Raising AWARENESS ABOUT THE ISSUES THREATENING WILDLIFE 🐠💚. I THINK THIS INITIATIVE IS A GREAT WAY TO ENGAGE PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY THE YOUNGER GENERATION, IN PROTECTING ENDANGERED SPECIES 🌱. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE GRAEME GREEN WHO ARE WILLING TO TAKE ACTION AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE 💪.

OMG 🤯 this new "Big Five" project is like super inspiring 🌟! I mean, who doesn't love wildlife photography? It's amazing that Graeme Green has taken this initiative to raise awareness about endangered species and we can all support it by checking out the book 📚. I'm thinking of getting one for my niece, she loves animals too 🐰💕. The problem with climate change is like so serious 🌪️, we need people like Graeme Green to keep pushing us towards change 💪. Can't wait to see more from the "New Big 5" project!

I'm so tired of all this 🤯, humans always gonna find ways to mess up our planet, it's like we're addicted to destroying the Earth 😩. Can't they just chill out and let wildlife live their best lives? 🌿 I mean, who needs 50k people voting on what animals to take pics of? 🤷‍♂️ It feels like a game show, but the prize is our planet's future 🎲. I love that Graeme Green is trying to do something about it tho 💪, using photography as a way to raise awareness and inspire change... we need more people like him! 📸 Let's get behind this movement and make some real changes, not just pretty pictures 😊

I think its crazy how one term like big five can turn from something so dark to something that sparks hope. I mean imagine if people who hunted wild animals started using their photography skills to help conservation instead 📸💚 Its also interesting how the "new big 5" was chosen based on popular vote, what do you think is the biggest difference between this project and the old one? Should we be using social media platforms to raise awareness about endangered species and make it more mainstream?

I'm totally on board with this movement 🌟, but I gotta say, I'm a bit skeptical about the "New Big 5" project being just a bunch of cool photos 📸. Don't get me wrong, those pictures are straight fire 🔥, but we need to talk about some real action behind the scenes. Like, what's the concrete plan to address climate change, poaching, and habitat loss? We can't just take pretty pics and expect everything to be okay 💁‍♀️.

I love that Graeme Green is using photography as a tool for change, but we need to see some tangible progress 📊. The book might inspire people to care about wildlife, but we need to see more of it in our daily lives 🌎. Let's not forget that words are cheap, and actions speak louder than any image 👍.

🌪️😔 its kinda sad that we need an entire movement to save wildlife... like we should just be doing this by default not because some animal was voted as most popular 🤷‍♂️ climate change is getting out of control and yet these species are still on the brink. 🐘🐻 i mean i love a good photo but can't we do more with our cameras than just point them at animals? 📸 we need to be taking action on habitat loss, pollution etc. not just clicking away for Instagram 🤦‍♂️

🐰📸 I think its time we talk about who's really in charge here - the wildlife enthusiasts or the governments? 🤔 I mean, Graeme Green is doing some amazing work with his "New Big 5" project, but what's stopping our leaders from taking action to protect these species already? 🚫 The fact that people have to be called upon to join a global movement to save wildlife just shows how out of touch governments can be sometimes. 🌎 But at the same time, I think its awesome that photographers are using their platform to raise awareness and inspire change. 💡 We need more voices like Graeme's shouting from the rooftops about the urgent need for conservation action. 🗣️ And let's not forget that climate change is a global issue that requires a global response - so who's going to step up and take responsibility? 😬
