The pet I'll never forget: Cocolo, the donkey who arrived unexpectedly at our door

A Donkey at Our Door: How One Uninvited Guest Became a Beloved Family Member

When my family moved to Jerusalem for a year, we thought that our lives were about to take a dramatic turn. Little did we know that an unexpected arrival would soon become the most unforgettable pet in our household.

The story of Cocolo, our brown and adorable donkey, began on a typical Sunday afternoon when my mum chatted with the doorman at the American Colony hotel, where we often went for buffet lunches. The conversation sparked something in her – she had always wanted a donkey! Fast forward a few days, and to our utter shock, there was another knock on the door. A man with a donkey appeared, claiming that my mum had accidentally ordered him. She couldn't deny it, so we welcomed Cocolo into our lives.

At first, having a donkey as a pet seemed like an amusing idea. We called him Cocolo after a children's book by Bettina Ehrlich, and he quickly won over our hearts with his endearing ears. Our elder sister, Sophy, and I were thrilled to have a new mode of transport for the school run, despite the busy road that posed a risk of accidents.

However, things took a turn when our classmates began to tease us about being dropped off on Cocolo instead of the family Volvo. It was an embarrassing situation, but we didn't care – Cocolo had stolen our hearts. Despite his stubborn nature, he proved to be a good-natured donkey, though sometimes lonely and frightened at night.

As much as we loved having Cocolo around, life in Jerusalem with a donkey became increasingly challenging for our neighbors. They couldn't understand why we were being driven to school on an animal instead of the usual car.

Eventually, after several months, Cocolo was banished to a farm in the West Bank. We would visit him at weekends, but I could sense that he never fully forgave us for sending him away. He seemed to carry out his duties more out of obligation than love. The final straw came when he reared up in response to a sudden noise, throwing my sister and me to the ground.

Mum took Cocolo back to the livestock market outside Damascus Gate, where she sold him to a kind-hearted milkman who needed a donkey for his rural deliveries. Though we were relieved to be rid of the hassle, I still use it as an excuse to tease my mum about taking us to school on a donkey – a guilt-trip that brings a smile to her face even years later.

Looking back, Cocolo's arrival may have been unexpected, but he became an integral part of our family. We learned to appreciate the value of living life on our own terms and embracing the quirks that make us unique. And although we'll never forget Cocolo, his memory serves as a reminder of the power of love, acceptance, and a good dose of humor.

omg i'm dyin over this story 😂 cocolo is literally the cutest donkey ever! my fam had a similar experience with a pet pig who escaped from our backyard one day lol it's crazy how quickly these animals can steal ur heart but at the same time be super handful 🐖💕. i love how ur mum just went with it and didnt care what ppl thought 😂 she's def one of those ppl who lives life on her own terms, and that's so inspiring!

I think its pretty cool how some people just become part of the fam without being planned out 🤷‍♀️. Like with this donkey, I mean who expects to be driven to school on an animal 😂? But seriously, its great how the family made the most of it and even turned it into a funny story they can share for years to come 📚. Its also interesting to see how having a pet like that would challenge social norms and expectations, but ultimately bring people closer together ❤️. I wish more people could appreciate the quirky and unexpected moments in life as much as this family did 😊.

I gotta say, this is one crazy story lol 😂. Having a donkey at home sounds like a dream come true for some people, but it's clear that living with Cocolo was not all fun and games 🤣. I mean, can you imagine having to deal with the neighbors complaining about your daily school drop-offs? 🙄 But in all seriousness, it's amazing how much joy and love Cocolo brought into their lives - even if he did have a stubborn side 🐴.

I think what I love most about this story is how it's not just about the donkey itself, but about the family's journey of embracing their quirks and living life on their own terms 💖. It's a reminder that sometimes, the things that seem weird or unusual can actually end up being really special 🤝.

And I've gotta ask, who knew that having a donkey as a pet could be such a great way to make you laugh years later? 😂 I mean, my mum would totally do this if she had the chance - always up for an adventure and never afraid to take things in stride 💪.

omg i would've totally freaked out if my family just got a donkey like that lol imagine having to deal with all those school days on a animal 🐴😂 but at the same time i can feel how much cocolo was loved in this fam - he really became one of them & it's so heartwarming that they made him a part of their lives no matter what 😊 i think its great that they didn't care about what others thought & just went with it, thats what makes life interesting right?

I mean, come on 🙄, this story is all over the place! First of all, ordering a donkey online is definitely not something you can do, let alone accidentally order one (that's just gonna happen if you're ordering livestock or whatever).

And what's with the whole situation where your classmates were teasing you about riding to school on Cocolo? I'm pretty sure that's just bullying and you should've told them to stop. It's not cute.

But anywayz, I do think it's cool that you guys learned to appreciate the quirks of having a donkey around. It's definitely a unique experience, but it could've been way less drama-filled if everyone involved was on the same page.

I also gotta say, I'm surprised you didn't take Cocolo back in the first place when he got scared and threw your sister to the ground 🤯. But hey, at least you guys found a good home for him in the end (the milkman sounds like a nice guy).

All in all, it's an okay story, but I think there are some areas where you could've done better 💁‍♀️

I mean, can you even imagine having a donkey just chillin' at your door? 😂 Like, it's not every day that you get to be a part of some random person's life, right? So I guess it's great that the family in this story found their perfect little bundle of joy... err, donkey. Cocolo's whole thing is pretty wild - from being an "uninvited guest" to becoming the ultimate family pet.

But here's the thing: having a donkey can be super challenging. I mean, think about it - you've got to feed him, walk him, and make sure he doesn't get too stressed out or scared. And then there are all these other people who might not understand why you're driving around on an animal instead of a car. It's like, good luck trying to explain that to your neighbors when they're being all judgmental.

On the flip side, though, it's also really sweet how the family just kinda... went with it. Like, they didn't even bother to try and figure out why Cocolo was at their door in the first place - he just kind of became a part of their lives. And it's awesome that they were able to make the most of it and learn some valuable lessons along the way.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: life with a donkey can be pretty unpredictable, but sometimes it can also be super rewarding? 🤷‍♀️

I'm like "lmao" when I read this! Having a donkey as a pet is literally crazy talk, but at the same time its super adorable . Like what would you even do with a donkey? But if it made your family happy & brought some laughs to the school run then thats all that matters 🤣. My question tho, was it hard for ur mom to take care of a donkey on her own? Like did she have like a whole team of helpers or what? Also how old r u now?

omg u gotta read this story about this family in jerusalem who adopts a donkey named cocolo lol it's sooo adorable they get him from the hotel lobby by mistake 😂🐴 at first they think it's gonna be a hassle but cocolo ends up being the best thing that ever happened to them they even start taking him to school 📚🐴 and yes, it's embarrassing but they don't care cuz they love him so much 💕

this is like my dream come true lol 🤣 - having a donkey as a pet sounds like a total game changer! who wouldn't want to ride around on an adorable little animal all day? i can imagine it's like one big happy family with Cocolo at the center 💕. and oh man, the teasing from your classmates is priceless 😂 - 'dropped off on a donkey' lolol that's gonna be a conversation starter for years to come 🤣.

anyway, what i really love about this story is how it teaches us to appreciate the quirks that make us unique and not judge others for being different 🌈. and it's so cool that Cocolo became such an integral part of your family - i'm sure he'll always be remembered as a beloved (if slightly stubborn) member 😊.

i can imagine how tough it must've been to say goodbye to him, but it sounds like the right decision for everyone involved 🙏. and hey, at least you get to keep the 'donkey to school' story as a fun memory 😂 - that's what i call a silver lining! 💫

I just can't get over how my family ended up with a donkey 🐴! I mean, who orders a pet on a whim? But honestly, it's kinda awesome that Cocolo became such an important part of their lives 😊. It sounds like having him around brought them closer together and taught them to not care about what others think. I can imagine how embarrassing it must've been for the kids when classmates teased them about riding on a donkey 🤣. But it's sweet that they still tease their mum about it years later 👵. Anyways, it's clear that Cocolo brought a lot of joy and character to their lives ❤️.

I mean can you believe this crazy thing happened to some family in Jerusalem? They just get this donkey at their doorstep and they're like "oh cool let's take him for school runs" lol what a wild idea! I was talking to my grandma the other day and she was telling me about her own pet chicken back in the 80s... we had like 5 chickens running around our backyard 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓, it was chaos. But anyway back to this donkey family - I think its kinda cool that Cocolo won them over despite being a bit stubborn. I'm glad they got rid of him eventually tho 'cause I mean I can only imagine the teasing they were getting from their classmates 😂. Its funny how some things bring us joy but also stress, like when my brother had to get his dog vaccinated and it was such a big deal...

I gotta say I'm totally obsessed with this story about the donkey at their door lol 🐴😂 it's like the funniest thing ever imagine having a pet donkey instead of just driving to school on the regular bus ugh my school would never let me pull up in a donkey 🤣 but seriously though i think its so cool that they got to have this amazing experience with cocolo and even though he was a handful at times they still loved him and cared for him deep down ❤️ its like a reminder that life is all about the little moments and unexpected surprises 🌟

OMG, this story is literally too cute 🐰💕! I mean, who wouldn't want a donkey as a pet?! It's like they say, "you never know what you're gonna get" 😂. But seriously, it's so great that Cocolo brought so much joy to the family, even if it did cause some drama with their classmates 👫. I love how they just rolled with it and made the most of the situation 🤣. And can we talk about how adorable Cocolo is in those pictures? 😍 Those big brown eyes are giving me all the feels 💗. Anyways, it's clear that Cocolo was more than just a pet to this family – he was a part of the fam 👪!

The whole thing with the donkey 🐴 is actually really inspiring. I mean, at first it sounds like a crazy situation where you just get taken in by this unexpected guest, but really it's about how it brought your family closer together. It's not just about having a pet that's different, but also about being open to new experiences and living life on your own terms.

And let's be real, the drama with the neighbors 🤣 is just an added bonus. I mean, can you imagine if everyone was as accepting of things they don't understand? It would make the world a much more interesting place! But seriously, it shows that even when things get tough, love and acceptance can conquer all.

What I think is really cool about this story is how it highlights the importance of humor and taking the good with the bad. It's easy to look back on the struggles and just focus on the negatives, but in this case, your mom uses Cocolo as an excuse to tease you years later 😂. That shows that even though things got out of hand at times, it didn't ruin your relationship.

In the end, Cocolo became a beloved member of your family not because he was perfect or easy to care for, but because he added something special to your lives. And I think that's what we can all learn from this story – to appreciate the quirks and imperfections that make life interesting.

omg i cant even believe this story 🤯, like who expects to get a donkey at their doorstep?! 🐴😂 my fave part is when they're trying to convince people that its normal for kids to go to school on a donkey 🙄 but seriously though what a wild ride having cocolo as a pet must've been 🎉 i mean its awesome that the family got to experience something new and unique, but also super challenging at times 🤷‍♀️

🐴💕 Cocolo was meant to be an impulsive thing but ended up being super awesome 🤪! Who needs a Volvo when you got a cool donkey like him 😂? My fave part is when he stole the hearts of everyone in our family, even my sis 👯‍♀️. I get why we had issues with neighbors but now I think it's all good, Cocolo brought us closer together 💕. It's not about what others think, its about being you and loving life 🌞💖

I just read about this donkey family member who showed up at their doorstep uninvited 🐴😂. I mean, talk about a surprise party! Sounds like they got "hee-haw"-ed into accepting him as one of the family 😊. Who knew having a donkey for school transport would be so embarrassing? 😳 But you can't stay mad at those big brown eyes and floppy ears 🤣. And I'm sure it was tough on the neighbors who had to deal with a furry friend instead of a family Volvo 🚗👀. Glad they could find a new home for him, but still getting teasing jokes out of that experience is pretty hilarious 😜!

I mean I feel for this family's situation 🤗. Moving to a new place can be crazy enough without having a donkey show up at your doorstep! But honestly, it sounds like Cocolo brought so much joy and uniqueness into their lives, even if it meant some initial embarrassment 😂. It's great that they learned to appreciate the quirks that make them special, and I love how they still tease their mum about taking them to school on a donkey 🤣! As a parent myself, I can imagine how hard it must be to balance making your kids laugh with keeping them grounded in reality 🙃. All in all, Cocolo may have been an unexpected addition to the family, but he's definitely left his mark 💕.
