'The silence allows me to hear every flurry of falling snow': walking in Switzerland's hidden valley

As I step onto the frozen path, the silence envelops me like a blanket. Every crunch of snow underfoot is magnified in this stillness, as if the forest itself is listening to my footsteps. The larch and pine trees tower above me, their branches etched in frosty glitter. In the distance, the crags and peaks rise like giants, an icily beautiful panorama that stretches for miles.

I've come to the Lower Engadine, a hidden valley in remote south-east Switzerland, seeking solitude and peace. My friend Kaspar recommended this winter wonderland after I mentioned my desire to escape the crowds. Over two weeks, I'll be exploring this fairytale landscape alone, following well-marked trails that wind through forests, past frozen lakes, and into secluded hamlets.

The valley is a haven for wildlife, with 36 species of mammals and over 100 species of birds calling it home. Despite being protected as Switzerland's only national park, visitors can still spot some of its rare creatures on the well-marked winter trails. The Engadine's inhabitants live in harmony with nature, speaking Romansh and following a traditional way of life that has barely changed.

As I make my way through the valley, I'm struck by the beauty of the tiny villages. Each one is a treasure trove of colour and charm, with houses adorned in sgraffito – a technique used to decorate walls with intricate designs. In Susch, I stumbled upon an old monastery converted into an art gallery dedicated to female artists, while its chic bistro served me a delicious mountain-herb tea.

My day hikes take me through forests where deer tracks run ahead of me, winding past waterfalls and snow-capped pinnacles. The silence is almost palpable, allowing me to hear every flurry of falling snow and the calls of birds in the crisp air. After each hike, I return feeling mentally refreshed and emotionally purged.

When I need a break from walking, I visit the Tarasp Castle with its contemporary art collection or watch a film in the tiny cinema at the Lavin railway station. The abandoned bath houses and springs of Nairs now serve as a cultural centre, while the ice sculpture park at Sur En is a breathtaking winter wonderland.

As I explore this winter wonderland, I discover that Scuol – the largest village in the valley – is without any hotel chains. Instead, it boasts an immaculate youth hostel and family-run guest houses. I indulge in delicious meals on its sunlit terrace or enjoy creamy hot chocolates in the bar of the Scuol Palace hotel, once frequented by royalty and luminaries.

This quiet, sleepy town offers a tranquil retreat for weary limbs after a day in the Engadine's wintry wonderland. It's a place where I can walk without being disturbed, where the only sound is the crunch of snow underfoot and the silence allows me to hear every flurry of falling snow.

the lower engadine sounds like an amazing winter escape 😌 i mean, who wouldn't want to hike through forests with deer tracks and waterfalls ❄️? and all those tiny villages with sgraffito designs? that's like a fairytale come true 🎨 it's great that kaspar recommended this spot - sometimes we just need a break from the crowds and some peace and quiet in nature 🌲👍

🏞️ I've been following this travel blog about the Lower Engadine in Switzerland and I'm totally drooling over those scenic trails and picturesque villages. 🤩 It's clear that author has a deep appreciation for nature and solitude, and it's amazing how they've wove these elements into their daily exploration of the valley.

I love how they highlight the beauty of tiny villages with sgraffito designs and the local art scene – who knew Switzerland had such a thriving female artist community? 🎨 The contrast between the tranquility of the forests and the bustling town life in Scuol is also really interesting to read about.

What I think resonates most, though, is how this author has found solace in the peace and quiet of the Engadine. Their reflections on mental rejuvenation and emotional purging make me want to book a ticket to Switzerland ASAP! 🛫

Omg this valley looks soooo gorgeous 🌲❄️ like somethin outta a fairytale! the way they decorate their houses with sgraffito is sooo cool 😍 i mean, who wouldn't wanna live in a place where nature and art blend together? 💖

I just got my hands on some bad news about climate change 🌡️... scientists are saying that global sea levels could rise by up to 1 meter by 2100, flooding coastal cities like Miami, Amsterdam, and even parts of the Swiss Alps 😱. And it's not just the polar regions that are affected - warmer oceans are also causing more frequent heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires around the world 🔥. The good news is that renewable energy sources are becoming cheaper and more efficient by the day, but I guess it won't be enough to offset the damage we've already done 🤕.

🏔️ This valley sounds like my idea of heaven 😌, all that nature and wildlife and tiny villages with colour and charm... I'd love to explore it myself one day 🤞. The fact that there are no hotel chains in Scuol is a plus for me, I hate those big chain hotels when I travel 🙅‍♂️. And the art galleries and cultural centres sound like a great way to unwind after a long hike 🎨. I'm definitely adding this place to my bucket list now 💭.

🏔️ this swiss winter wonderland sounds like absolute paradise ❤️ i mean who needs crowds and chaos when you can have a frozen forest that's just listening to your footsteps? 😂 the idea of exploring 2 weeks in solitude, following well-marked trails and spotting rare wildlife is giving me major wanderlust vibes 🚶‍♀️🦊

I just got back from vacation 🏖️ and it feels so good! I was thinking about traveling more next year... do you think it's better to visit during winter or summer? The forest in that place looks super pretty with all the snow, but isn't it cold? Should I bring warm clothes?

Dude, have you tried those new plant-based milks from oatly 🥛? I mean, I know they're super popular among the wellness crowd, but honestly, I'm loving them in my morning coffee. The almond milk from last year was just too rich and overpowering for my taste. This new one's got a nice subtle creaminess to it. And don't even get me started on the environmental benefits – all that energy going into making these milks could be spent on saving the planet, you know? Anyway, back to this winter wonderland... I swear, if I ever visit Switzerland, I'll totally do some day hikes in those mountains 🏔️

🌨️ this switzerland valley thing sounds super peaceful & i can see why u'd wanna escape crowds for some solace 🌲 the fact that it's a national park with 36 mammal species is pretty cool 🐿️ but what really gets me is how people still live in harmony w nature 👥 speaking romansh & keeping traditional ways of life sounds really beautiful 💫

I'm literally dying over here reading about this frozen paradise 😂 The Lower Engadine in Switzerland sounds like it straight out of a fairytale 🧚‍♀️, with its towering trees, icy beauty, and secluded hamlets. I mean, who wouldn't want to escape the crowds and spend two weeks in solitude, surrounded by nature's splendor? 🌳

But what really gets me is how the locals live in harmony with nature – it's like they're speaking a different language or something 💬. The fact that visitors can still spot rare creatures on the trails just adds to the magic. And those tiny villages? I'm totally imagining myself wandering through them, taking in the colour and charm 🏙️.

And can we talk about the art scene for a sec? I mean, an old monastery converted into an art gallery dedicated to female artists? That's like something out of a dream 🎨. And that mountain-herb tea at the bistro in Susch? 😍

But what I think really gets me is how this place seems to have it all – solitude, natural beauty, culture... and no hotel chains! 🙌 It's like they're trying to preserve the old charm of Switzerland or something. And the fact that I can indulge in delicious meals on a sunlit terrace or enjoy creamy hot chocolates at the Scuol Palace hotel? That's just the icing on the cake 🍰.

I swear, this place is calling my name and I need to go there ASAP ⏰!

I'm thinking about my favorite pizza topping - anchovies 🐟... I mean, I know some people hate 'em, but there's just something about that salty, fishy flavor that balances out all the cheese and sauce for me. Have you guys ever tried an authentic Italian-style pizza with fresh anchovies? It's a game changer! 👌

Just saw that article about the Lower Engadine in Switzerland 🏞️😍 it looks like the perfect winter escape for those who want some real peace and quiet, no crowds or distractions just nature at its finest ❤️ I'm with you on wanting to get out of the hustle and bustle sometimes, a few days in a beautiful place like that can work wonders for your mental health 😌

🌨️ just got back from switzerland and i'm still reeling from the beauty of the lower engadine valley... 🌲 i mean, have you ever seen anything like it? 36 species of mammals and over 100 birds in one place? it's like nature is saying "peace out" to all the chaos we create. 😌

🌲💚 this Lower Engadine national park thingy sounds like it's straight outta 80s travel brochures 📚🗺️, remember those? anyway, i'm all about that solo adventure vibe right now, just me and my hiking boots against the snowy wilderness 🏞️❄️. i mean, 36 species of mammals and over 100 birds species? sounds like a real-life wildlife documentary to me 📺🌿

and oh man, those tiny villages with their sgraffito houses are straight fire 🔥💫, reminds me of our village's old town hall back in the day, all decorated with flowers and stuff 🎨🌸. but seriously, it's cool that they have art galleries and bistro serving mountain-herb tea, like a real-life fairy tale setting 👑🍵

and then there's this ice sculpture park at Sur En... i mean, who needs fancy resorts when you've got snow-capped pinnacles and frozen lakes 🏔️❄️? and the abandoned bath houses turned cultural centre? genius 💡, we used to do something similar with our old school's courtyard back in the day...

anyway, it sounds like Scuol is that one place where you can just walk around without being disturbed, enjoy some hot chocolate, and be all zen 🌲💆‍♀️. gotta love that vibe 😌

omg i'm dyin over this winter wonderland 🌨️❤️ cant wait 2 go explore switzerland in the snow myself lol but seriously, its like the whole country is one big ski resort 🏂🎿 how do they manage 2 keep it so peaceful and serene though? 🤔 idk if i could ever quiet my own mind enough to enjoy that level of silence 😴 anyway gotta get me some mountain-herb tea ASAP 🍵😋
