Thousands march in Greenland to support Arctic island in the face of Trump's threats to take it over

Thousands of people in Greenland took to the streets on Saturday, braving rain and freezing temperatures to protest US President Donald Trump's policy towards the island nation. The protesters, mostly young people, waved their national flag and chanted "Greenland is not for sale," demonstrating their opposition to what they see as an attempt by the US to exert control over the autonomous territory.

The protests came just hours after Trump announced that he would impose a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries, including Greenland, if those countries opposed US control of the island. The move is seen as an attack on Greenland's sovereignty and self-governance.

"We want to keep our own country and our own culture, and our family safe," said Marie Pedersen, a 47-year-old Greenlander who attended the protest with her 9-year-old daughter Alaska. "They tell us how to stand up if you're being bullied by another country or something."

The protests drew nearly a quarter of Nuuk's population and were described as the largest ever seen in Greenland. Tom Olsen, a police officer in Nuuk, said that he hoped the protest would show Trump that the people of Greenland would not give up their autonomy without a fight.

Meanwhile, some people expressed concern about the potential economic impact of the tariffs. Tillie Martinussen, a former member of Greenland's parliament, said she hoped the Trump administration would "abandon this crazy idea" and instead focus on preserving NATO and Greenland's sovereignty.

As the protesters marched through the streets, they chanted slogans such as "Greenland is not for sale" and carried signs that read "Hands off our country." The message was clear: the people of Greenland will not give up their autonomy without a fight.

The protests have drawn international attention, with many people around the world expressing solidarity with the people of Greenland. As one protester in Copenhagen said, "There are many small countries. None of them are for sale."

omg can u believe trump thinks he can just dictate to greenland what they wanna do?! it's like, hello we're not some tiny state you can just control like a pawn in your game of global politics 🀯. the fact that ppl r protesting in the rain and freezing temps shows how serious they r about defending their sovereignty. and honestly who needs 10% tariffs anyway? it's not like greenland is gonna be all like ok fine we surrender to us πŸ™„. tillie martinussen makes a great point tho, nato and preserving independence are way more important than some petty trade policy.

I gotta say, what's Trump thinking? Like, literally, who gives an ultimatum to an entire country like that? Greenland is basically asking to be left alone, and he's all like 'nope, you're going to pay me a tariff.' Newsflash, dude: we don't need your protection or your money. We've been running our own show for centuries! 🀣 And what's with the 10% tariff? Is he trying to make us dependent on him? It's like, no thanks, buddy. πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ The fact that people are braving rain and freezing temps to protest this is wild – they're not messing around. Greenland needs to stand up for itself, and fast! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” This whole thing got me thinking... if it's not for sale, then what's the point of even having a tariff? Like, how much are they gonna make from Greenland if nobody buys their stuff? And what about the EU countries that are already friends with Greenland? Won't they just find another way to trade with them or something?

I also feel bad for Marie Pedersen and her daughter Alaska. It's one thing to protest for your country's sovereignty, but it's a whole other level when you're risking your kid's safety because of some politician's ego.

I'm not sure if Trump even understands how the world works anymore πŸ˜‚. I mean, tariffs? Really? That's just gonna hurt more people than help them. And what about Greenland's own economy? They've been trying to develop their fishing industry and tourism sector for years. This is just gonna stifle that growth.

I think we should be focusing on building bridges instead of walls (or tariffs πŸ˜‚). Maybe if everyone could just get along and work together, we wouldn't need all these protests in the first place. πŸ€—

omg, what's going on in Greenland right now is crazy! 🀯 thousands of ppl takin to the streets in rain & freezing temps 2 protest against trump's policy, it's like they're sayin dont mess with us! πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ their flags wavin, chants goin strong... its so empowering 2 see ppl stand up 4 what they believe in πŸ’ͺ they got a right 2 keep their sovereignty & culture safe, no one should be tryna take that away from them πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

man I think its crazy how some ppl r saying trumps gonna take over greenland like what even is that supposed 2 b about πŸ€” and theres all these concerns abt the tariffs but idk can we just talk bout how brave those ppl r in Nuuk for standin up 4 their country? and yeah tillie makes a good point about nato lol anyway i think its awesome thats the people of greenland r showing Trump who's boss 🀘

πŸ€” This protest in Greenland is kinda worrying for me, you know? It's like, I get why they're upset - Trump's tariff policy does seem pretty aggressive. But at the same time, it's hard not to think that Greenland might be playing into Trump's hands by protesting this way... I mean, if a US President is talking trash about selling out, doesn't that kinda fuel their own narrative? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And what about all those economic concerns? Could this whole thing just backfire and hurt Greenland even more than it hurts the US?

I also wonder how much pressure there actually is on Trump to keep his word... like, is he really gonna go through with that tariff if everyone around the world starts saying "hands off our country"? πŸ€” It's a complex situation, and I'm not sure what's gonna happen next. But one thing for sure - it's gonna be interesting to watch how this plays out! πŸ’₯

just can't believe what's happening rn... US trying to exert control over a tiny island nation like that? it's just plain crazy 🀯 and what's even more alarming is the fact that Greenlanders are willing to stand up against it, no matter what the cost. i'm all for self-governance and sovereignty, and i think it's awesome that these young people are fighting for their rights. 10% tariff? come on! like, who gets to decide how other countries can trade with them? πŸ€‘ gotta be some kinda crazy misunderstanding... anyway, hope Trump backs off and respects Greenland's autonomy 🀞

I'm low-key worried about this whole situation... Like, I get why they're protesting, but 10% tariffs on goods? That's a pretty big deal πŸ€”. It's like, the US is trying to exert control over Greenland, and it's just not cool πŸ˜’. But at the same time, can't we all just chill for a sec and talk this out? I mean, it's not like they're trying to hurt anyone... or are they? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And what's up with Trump's whole 'Greenland is for sale' thing? Like, dude, Greenland has its own government and everything! It's not a plaything for you to do whatever you want 😑. I'm all about preserving sovereignty and stuff, but come on... can't we find a way to work together instead of trying to strong-arm each other? 🀝

Anyway, kudos to the people of Greenland for standing up for what they believe in! That takes a lot of courage πŸ’ͺ. And it's awesome that there are people around the world showing solidarity with them – we should all be supporting each other more often ❀️.

man it's like Trump is trying to rewrite the rules of diplomacy or something... I mean, Greenland is an independent nation and they want to keep it that way? πŸ€” it's not about control or domination, it's about respecting their sovereignty and self-governance. We need to think about this from a global perspective too - what if we apply the same logic to other countries like France or China? where does it end? 🌎 I feel for Marie Pedersen and her daughter, it must be scary to live in a world where your country is being negotiated as a commodity... the stakes are high here

Wow 🀯! Greenland taking on US president Trump like that, wow 😲! They're all about keepin it independent and sovereign, no strings attached πŸ’ͺ. Tariffs or not, Greenland's got its own voice and will make its own moves πŸ—£οΈ. Some people worried 'bout economy, but they gotta think about pride and self-determination too πŸ‘Š

I gotta say, this whole thing got me thinking... I mean, what's next? Are they gonna start taxing our Netflix subscriptions too? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, it's wild to see Greenlanders stand up against US control like that. They're literally fighting for their right to self-governance and autonomy. You can't blame 'em – who wouldn't want to make their own decisions about their country? The fact that they're doing it in the face of some pretty harsh conditions (rain, freezing temps... talk about braving the elements) just shows how committed they are to what they believe in.

I think it's awesome that the international community is showing some love for Greenland and standing up against this US policy. It's like, we get it, Trump's got his own agenda, but does he really need to impose tariffs on an entire country? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I guess only time'll tell what happens next, but one thing's for sure – the people of Greenland are speaking out and won't back down without a fight πŸ’ͺ

🌍πŸ‘₯ I'm really proud of those Greenlancers who stood up against Trump's attempt to control their country! πŸ’ͺ It's not right that the US is trying to exert its influence over Greenland like that πŸ€”. Those young people waving their flag and shouting "Greenland is not for sale" are absolute bosses πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. We need more people around the world standing up against oppression and fighting for what's rightfully theirs πŸ’₯. And I have to give a shoutout to Tillie Martinussen, that former parliament member who spoke out against the tariffs πŸ™. Maybe Trump will listen and abandon this crazy idea πŸ˜…. But if he doesn't, we need to keep showing our support for Greenland and its people πŸ’•.

I'm low-key worried about Greenland's situation πŸ€”πŸ’”. The whole US imposing tariffs thing sounds super aggressive πŸ’ͺ🏽 and I don't think the world needs that kind of drama πŸ˜’. Like, can't we all just get along? 🌎 #GreenlandDeservesRespect #NoTariffsPlease

The fact that nearly a quarter of Nuuk's population showed up to protest is honestly super inspiring πŸ’ͺ🏽 and it's amazing to see the next gen of Greenlanders taking a stand for their country's sovereignty 🌟. Trump better listen up, 'cause they're not going down without a fight πŸ”₯ #ResistanceIsFutileNotForGreenland

Tillie Martinussen makes a valid point about NATO - can't we focus on preserving global peace instead of trying to control other countries' stuff? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸŒŽ I'm all for supporting Greenland's autonomy, but let's not forget that there are bigger issues at play πŸ’‘ #PeaceOverControl

🌎 just saw this news about greland protesters and gotta say its kinda wild that trump is trying to exert control over a country thats already super autonomous... like, whats the goal here? dont they have their own government and everything? πŸ€” anyway, i think its awesome that the ppl of greland are standing up for themselves and defending their sovereignty. tariffs can hurt economies big time tho... hopefully trumps team comes to their senses soon πŸ’ΈπŸ‡¬πŸ‡Ή

I'm thinking... if Trump is trying to exert control over Greenland like that, it's kinda weird πŸ€” especially since Greenland has its own government and stuff already. I feel bad for Marie Pedersen and her daughter Alaska who had to deal with the protest on a Saturday πŸ˜•. But at the same time, I get why they're upset - their country is pretty unique and doesn't need some foreign power telling them what to do 🌎. I'm kinda worried about the economic impact though... my friend's sister works in Nuuk and she was like "what if we can't import stuff anymore?" πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Guess it's good that the protest showed Trump they're not going down without a fight πŸ’ͺ.

I'm soooo with Trump on this one πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ! Like, come on, who doesn't love a good deal? 10% tariff is a total steal, and if Greenland can't handle it, that's their problem. I mean, the US is basically holding out a hand to them like "Hey, we care about you" πŸ€”, but all they need to do is play nice and get ready for some serious economic growth πŸ’Έ! The fact that people are protesting and whining about sovereignty? Please, it's just politics as usual 😴. Greenland should be grateful the US even cares enough to try and "help" them out πŸ‘...

Man... think about this - what happens when someone tries to take away your autonomy? You know, like when you're at home and your parents try to control everything, but then you grow up and move out, right? You realize that they were just trying to protect you because they cared. Same thing with Greenland - the people there are fighting for their independence because they want what's best for them and their families.

It's not about being stubborn or ungrateful; it's about standing up for what's rightfully yours. And trust me, I know a thing or two about feeling like your freedom is being taken away (been there, done that). But the key is to stay calm, speak up, and show them that you won't be intimidated.

It's all about self-empowerment, man... learning to stand on your own two feet and make your own decisions. And that's something we can all learn from Greenland - they're not afraid to fight for what they believe in.
