Tin Roof Cafe, Maldon, Essex: 'Come for topsoil, stay for the shortbread' – review

A gem hidden in plain sight: the Tin Roof Cafe in Maldon, Essex is a must-visit destination for those seeking a unique dining experience that's equal parts charming and delicious. Tucked away on Bryants Lane, this family-run bakery and cafe serves up mouth-watering treats from its in-house bakery, as well as hearty brunch and lunch options.

Upon entering the Tin Roof Cafe, you'll be greeted by the warm aroma of freshly baked goods and the friendly faces of the owners, who are passionate about providing a welcoming atmosphere for all. The interior is adorned with rustic touches, including red brick walls, lush greenery, and alfresco spaces perfect for soaking up the sun.

Despite its casual vibe, the menu boasts a surprising range of dishes that cater to even the pickiest eaters. For those looking for something sweet, the shortbread is a game-changer – made with an extra layer of caramel decadence, it's clear that real billionaires wouldn't dare indulge in this indulgent treat.

For savory options, try the bubble and squeak with hand-cut ham or one of the several seafood dishes on offer. The Malaysian chicken salad is another standout, featuring a generous helping of seared chicken, mango, cashew nuts, cucumber, seeds, leaves, and a zesty orange-based dressing – although it would be nice if there were a more convenient way to assemble this deliciousness.

While the cafe can get busy during peak hours, with long queues forming in reception, the owners' welcoming nature makes you feel like part of the family. Expect a mix of gardeners, motorbike gangs, pensioner ladies, teenagers on dates, and families with babies – all united by their love of food, drink, and gardening.

As a finishing touch, be sure to try one of the bakery's famous cakes at home. The Basque cheesecake is airy, rich, and perfectly sweet, while the bakewell tart is indulgent without being over-the-top.

With its bustling atmosphere, mouth-watering menu, and commitment to sustainability (thanks to its allotments and topsoil for sale), the Tin Roof Cafe is a true gem that's well worth seeking out. So come for the topsoil, stay for the shortbread – and be prepared to join the throngs of people fighting for a spot at this Maldon institution.

idk why ppl are raving about this cafe its just a bunch of overpriced baked goods and mediocre breakfast options 🤷‍♂️ like who gets excited for bubble and squeak lol? i mean im all 4 gardeners and pensioner ladies too but come on, shortbread isnt that special 😂 and dont even get me started on the crowds during peak hours its more like a zoo than a cozy cafe lol, and £15 plus drinks is just crazy rich 🤑

So if you haven't been to the Tin Roof Cafe yet, what are you even doing with your life? Get thee down there and try some of that amazing shortbread 🤣!

OMG you guys! 🤯 I just found the most underrated cafe in Essex - Tin Roof Cafe is a total hidden gem! 💎 The shortbread is LIFE.CHANGING 🍰, trust me on this one. But honestly, everything on the menu sounds SO deliciously good. From bubble and squeak to Malaysian chicken salad... I'm drooling just thinking about it 😋. And have you seen their famous cakes? Basque cheesecake anyone? 😍👀 Their commitment to sustainability is also super cool - who knew selling topsoil could be a thing? 🌱💚. Plus, the atmosphere is so cozy and welcoming... I'd totally want to go back for brunch or just grab a coffee on my own. Anyone else been there? 🤔

I gotta disagree with the whole "must-visit destination" vibe. I mean, have you seen the pictures? It's just a bunch of old buildings slapped together with some garden stuff on top 🤷‍♀️. The food might be alright, but it's not like it's going to change your life or anything. And what's up with all these people fighting for a spot? It sounds like a total mess 🚫. I'd rather have my cake (literally) and eat it in peace at home, thank you very much 😒. Plus, £15 is way too much just for some shortbread... no thanks 💸.

You gotta try the Tin Roof Cafe 🤩 in Maldon, Essex! I went there with my wife for a lazy Sunday brunch and was blown away by the cozy atmosphere and mouth-watering grub 😍. We had the bubble and squeak with hand-cut ham which was seriously delicious, but what really stole the show was that shortbread - I mean who needs billionaire treats when you can have the real deal? 💸 It's like they say, it's not just about the food, it's about the experience too 🤗. And let me tell you, this place has got it all - gardeners, bikers, families with little ones... everyone's welcome! 👫 Just be prepared for a queue during peak hours, but trust me, it's worth the wait 😅. Plus, they've got their own allotments and sell topsoil on site - talk about sustainable living 🌱. We ended up buying some to take home and making our own cakes ( Basque cheesecake was a game-changer for us!)! If you're in Maldon, do yourself a favour and pop in for a visit. You won't regret it 😊.

I mean, think about it... this place is like a little slice of community, you know? People from all walks of life comin' together over a shared love of good grub and atmosphere. It's not just about the food (although, oh man, that shortbread is something else 🤩), it's about the vibes and the people you meet along the way.

And it got me thinkin', what if we all just took a page from the Tin Roof Cafe's book? Embracin' the everyday moments as special opportunities to connect with others and find joy in the simple things. Like, instead of rushin' around, takin' time to appreciate the little gems that are hidden in plain sight 🌿.

I guess what I'm sayin' is, this place isn't just a cafe, it's an experience. It's about slowin' down and savoring life's pleasures. And, honestly, that's somethin' we could all learn from.

the tin roof cafe in maldon, essex sounds like a total hidden gem 🤫🍰 i mean, who wouldn't want to visit a place that's equal parts charming and delicious? the fact that they have a bakery on site is just genius - you can literally smell the freshly baked goods as soon as you walk in. and the menu is so varied, it's like they're trying to cater to everyone. i'm particularly intrigued by the malaysian chicken salad, that sounds like an amazing combination of flavors 🤤

but what really gets me is how welcoming the atmosphere is, despite getting busy during peak hours. it's clear that the owners are passionate about making people feel at home. and the fact that they're committed to sustainability is just a bonus - who wouldn't want to support a business that's good for the planet? 🌿

anyway, if you're ever in maldon, essex, i think you owe it to yourself to check out the tin roof cafe. just be prepared for a crowd, and maybe even try some of their famous cakes at home afterwards 😋

🍴 I'm obsessed with the Tin Roof Cafe in Maldon, Essex! 🤩 It's like they're hiding a treasure or something - but honestly, who needs hidden gems when you can just go straight to this place? 😂 The shortbread is TO DIE FOR and the bubble and squeak with hand-cut ham... I need it all. 🤤 And have you seen their garden? They grow their own topsoil (yes, you read that right) and sell it too! It's like a little slice of heaven in Maldon. The atmosphere is so cozy and welcoming - I love how they make you feel like part of the family (even when there are long queues). And let's not forget about those famous cakes... Basque cheesecake, anyone? 🍰

I'm totally obsessed with the Tin Roof Cafe in Maldon, Essex – it's like a breath of fresh air amidst all the chaos we're living in 🌿👍 The moment you step foot in there, you can smell the freshly baked goods wafting through the air and feel the warmth from the owners' genuine hospitality ❤️. I mean, who wouldn't want to hang out with folks who are passionate about serving up delicious grub and making everyone feel like part of the family? 🤗 The menu is so underrated – it's like a treasure trove of tasty surprises for every palate. From the shortbread that's literally off the charts (those billionaires would be eating themselves into oblivion just thinking about it) 😂, to the bubble and squeak with hand-cut ham or seafood options... honestly, what more could you ask for? 🤩 And don't even get me started on the bakery – those cakes are like a party in your mouth! The Basque cheesecake is sublime, and the bakewell tart? Heavenly 😋. It's no wonder this place gets slammed during peak hours – it's basically an institution at this point 💖. I'm seriously considering planning a trip just to get my hands on some of that topsoil (or whatever it is they're selling) and then, of course, indulging in some serious shortbread therapy 😂👍

I'm not sure if it's just the perfect spot for a relaxed Sunday brunch or if it's actually going to be mobbed by foodies soon 😂🍴 anyway, the Tin Roof Cafe seems like an absolute gem hidden in plain sight. I mean, who wouldn't want to indulge in that shortbread and Basque cheesecake at home? 🍰 but seriously, £15 plus drinks and service is a bit steep for me – I'd rather save it up and enjoy the atmosphere with my wallet intact 💸

on the other hand, the fact that they have allotments and sell topsoil on site is actually really cool – I've been meaning to get into gardening and this seems like the perfect place to start 🌱👍

🤩 I just discovered this place and it's literally the cutest thing ever! I mean who needs fancy restaurants when you can have a family-run cafe serving up amazing treats and grub? The shortbread is insane, I'm not even kidding 🤯 and the prices are super reasonable. Plus, it's clear they care about their community and environment - love the allotments and sustainable vibes 💚. My only gripe would be the queueing situation on peak days, but honestly, it's just a sign of how much people love this place! 👏

I'm totally obsessed with this place 🤩... wait, no I'm not, I mean yes I am 🙅‍♂️... but only if you're a fan of really long queues 😒. Like, I get it, the cafe's popular, but can't they just scale up or something? Or maybe that's part of the charm, idk 🤔. Also, I love how they use locally sourced topsoil for sale, it's so... eco-friendly 💚... but what if you're not into gardening? Like, do you still need it? 🤷‍♂️.

On a more positive note, the shortbread is TO DIE FOR 😍, and the Malaysian chicken salad sounds amazing... until I think about how hard it must be to make all those ingredients work together 🤯. And can we talk about the prices? Like, £15 plus drinks and service seems kinda steep 💸... but maybe that's just me being cheap 🤑.

Anyway, if you're into all that, go for it! The Tin Roof Cafe seems like a super chill spot to hang out with friends or family 👪. Just don't expect me to join the crowds anytime soon 😅.

I'm loving this hidden gem in Maldon, the Tin Roof Cafe is literally serving up a taste explosion! I mean, who wouldn't want to try their famous shortbread and Basque cheesecake? 🍰👍 The atmosphere is so cozy and inviting, it's like you're part of the family. And can we talk about sustainability? Using allotments and topsoil for sale is genius 💚. But what really gets me is how they make everyone feel welcome, regardless of who they are or where they come from 🌈. It's not just a cafe, it's a community hub. I need to get myself there ASAP! 👉🏻

I just found out about this awesome cafe in Maldon and I gotta say its a hidden gem 🤫🍴. I mean, who wouldn't want to try the famous shortbread that's so good it's like buying from a millionaire? 😂 But seriously, the menu sounds super varied and delicious, with options for everyone. The fact that they use their own allotments and sell topsoil too is really cool - its like they're all about reducing waste and living sustainably. 💚 I love how casual it feels but also how fancy some of the dishes are. Its like a big happy family in there! 👪 And the prices don't seem too bad either, around £15 plus drinks and service. Im defo adding this to my list for when im in Maldon next! 📅

I'm obsessed with this hidden gem in Maldon 🤩🍴 the Tin Roof Cafe is seriously underrated! I mean, who wouldn't want to visit a place that's basically like stepping into a countryside paradise? The shortbread is TO DIE FOR btw it's like they're speaking our language or something. And can we talk about how awesome it is that they have an allotment and sell topsoil? It's like they're giving us all the sustainability vibes 🌱💚

I went there with my friends last weekend and we were totally blown away by the food, atmosphere, and just everything in general. We were laughing and chatting and enjoying our meals so much that I think we might've been the only ones who didn't notice how busy it was outside lol. The owners are like total warm hugs for your soul - they're so down-to-earth and welcoming.

One thing I would say is that some of the dishes are a bit confusingly presented - like, I'm all about trying new things, but sometimes I just want my food to come in a neat little box with an easy-to-follow instructions on how to eat it. But honestly? That's just nitpicking. The Tin Roof Cafe is seriously worth a visit just for the cakes alone 🍰👌
