'Tom Cruise was not happy': Colin Farrell was so drunk on Minority Report he needed 46 takes for a single line

Colin Farrell has recounted an infamous day on the set of Minority Report, where his erratic behavior after consuming alcohol nearly derailed the entire shoot.

The actor recalls getting up from bed to find a driver telling him it was already 10:45 am - more than four hours before their scheduled start time. "I got up to all sorts of nonsense that night," Farrell told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, adding that he'd had six Pacifico beers and 20 Marlboro Reds.

When making his way to set, the usually sober Farrell struggled to get through a single line - finally completing it after 46 attempts. Tom Cruise was not amused, with some speculating that the incident was one of the reasons why Farrell checked himself into rehab in 2003 to address issues related to substance abuse.

This isn't the first instance of actors experimenting with authenticity by shooting scenes while intoxicated; examples include Fred Astaire's 'drunken dance' scene in Holiday Inn, where he'd consumed seven bourbons beforehand, and Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. Robert Shaw shot his iconic monologue for Jaws after being heavily intoxicated.

In contrast to Farrell's antics, co-star Tom Cruise has established himself as a consummate professional, maintaining a strict work ethic and avoiding on-set partying. A leaked 2020 audio clip revealed Cruise berating crew members who failed to follow social distancing guidelines during filming for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

man i was just thinking about the craziest thing that happened to me last weekend... i was trying to cook ramen noodles and i added way too much dashi powder and it tasted like seaweed 🤢 lol anyway Colin Farrell is kinda relatable tho, we've all had those days where our brain turns to mush after drinking too much 🍺 but at least he's owning up to it now and talking about getting help 🙏 on the other hand i wonder what it's like being a professional actor and having to be "on" all the time... does anyone know if they have any downtime or can just chill without being judged? 🤔

omg can u believe colin farrell's story? like he was literally hammered on set 🤯 and couldn't even get through one line of his own script lol 46 attempts?! i can see how that would be a problem, especially if you're trying to play a character who's supposed to be all sharp and focused. meanwhile tom cruise is over here being super professional and responsible 🙏 it's interesting to think about how actors balance being realistic for their roles with staying sober on set... maybe they should have a "drunk scene" fund or something 😂

I mean can you even imagine having six Pacifico beers and still managing to get up from bed lol 😂 I feel bad for Colin Farrell, he's been open about his struggles with substance abuse in the past and it sounds like this incident was just a bump in the road 🤦‍♂️. I'm more impressed by Tom Cruise's dedication to being on set and getting the job done, even when everyone around him is having a wild time 😎. It's interesting how these actors' approaches to authenticity can be so different - some go all out like Colin Farrell, while others stick to their guns like Tom Cruise 💪. I wonder what it would've been like if more actors had taken a page from Cruise's book and kept their antics on set private 🤔
