US President Donald Trump has announced a 10% tariff on eight European countries, including France, the UK, Denmark, and Norway, in an attempt to pressure them into allowing the US to purchase Greenland. The tariffs are set to come into effect on February 1 and will increase to 25% on June 1.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that the tariffs would be imposed until a deal is reached for the US to undertake the "complete and total purchase" of Greenland. However, European leaders have condemned the move as an attempt to intimidate and undermine transatlantic relations.
The EU's Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa have warned that the tariffs could trigger a dangerous downward spiral, while French President Emmanuel Macron described the threat as "unacceptable". Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has also stated that a US invasion of Greenland would be catastrophic for NATO and would make Vladimir Putin "the happiest man on earth".
The move has been widely rejected by European countries, with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stating that his country will not be intimidated. Greenlandic minister Naaja Nathanielsen has praised the reaction of the targeted countries, saying that diplomacy and allieship should prevail.
Despite Trump's insistence that Greenland is vital to US security due to its strategic location and large mineral deposits, the local population has roundly rejected the idea of joining the US. A recent poll found that 85% of Greenlanders oppose the territory joining the United States, while only six percent were in favor.
The EU will convene an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the tariffs, which are likely to further strain relations between the US and Europe.
