Trump leaves NATO allies "dumbfounded" and "disgusted" with remarks dismissing sacrifices in Afghanistan

US President's Remarks on NATO Troops in Afghanistan Leave Allies 'Dumbfounded' and 'Disgusted'

President Trump's comments on the US role in the war in Afghanistan have left European allies "dumbfounded" and "disgusted", with many questioning his understanding of the sacrifices made by NATO troops.

In a video posted on social media, UK Defence Minister Alistair Carmichael, a veteran who served five tours in Afghanistan alongside American troops, fired back at Trump's remarks. "The only time NATO has ever enacted Article 5 was after the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the US," Carmichael said. "We shed blood, sweat and tears together, and not everybody came home. These are bonds forged in fire, protecting shared interests, but actually protecting democracy overall."

Carmichael's comments echoed those of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who described Trump's remarks as "insulting and frankly appalling". Roman Polko, a retired Polish general and former special forces commander who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, called on Trump to apologize for his statement. "We paid with blood for this alliance," he said. "We truly sacrificed our own lives."

The comments have also sparked outrage from families of the fallen. Lucy Aldridge, mother of 18-year-old British soldier William Aldridge, who was killed in a bomb blast while trying to save fellow troops, described herself as "deeply disgusted" by Trump's remarks. Her son died on his first day of training in Afghanistan in 2009.

The former head of the British Army, Lord Richard Dannatt, called Trump's comments "outrageous". "Well frankly, one was dumbfounded, because they're factually incorrect," he said. "Absolutely disrespectful to our nation, to our armed forces and to the families of the 457 British service men and women who lost their lives in Afghanistan."

Trump's remarks have also sparked debate about the future of NATO. European governments must do more to increase military capability, not because they want to fight a war, but to deter further aggression.

The White House has defended Trump's comments, stating that his success in delivering a five percent spending pledge from NATO allies is helping Europe take greater responsibility for its own defense. However, the criticism directed at Trump remains intense, with many questioning his understanding of the sacrifices made by NATO troops and the future of the alliance.

I'm so sick of politicians trying to save face, you know? Reminds me of when Bush made those comments back in '07 about Iraq... same old thing, just another excuse to deflect responsibility.

And I mean, come on, Trump's got no idea what he's talking about. Did he even serve in the military? I doubt it. My cousin's brother-in-law was stationed in Afghanistan for a year and a half, and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have made those kinds of comments if he were in his shoes.

It's just so disheartening to see our leaders make light of something as serious as the sacrifices NATO troops are making. I mean, what would you do if your little brother or sister went off to war? You'd be worried sick, right? That's how it feels for these families.

I'm not buying the White House's explanation that Trump's comments are helping Europe take responsibility for its own defense... sounds like just another PR stunt to me. At least our European friends should know better than to mess with the US at this point.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the comments made by President Trump on NATO troops in Afghanistan 🀯. It's one thing to have a differing opinion on foreign policy, but it feels like he's completely disregarding the sacrifices made by our allies who put their lives on the line for us. I mean, come on, five tours of duty is not something you can just "get over" πŸ˜‚. It's heartbreaking to see families of fallen soldiers being left feeling "deeply disgusted" by his remarks πŸ‘Š.

And what really gets me is that some folks are saying it's time for Europe to step up their military game so we don't have to rely on the US all the time πŸ€”. But let's not forget, NATO was formed in the first place because of the threat of terrorism and aggression from countries like Iran and North Korea πŸ’£.

Trump's comments may be a big part of that problem, but it's also going to take some real effort from European governments to increase their military capabilities without being seen as aggressive 🚫. I'm not sure what Trump was thinking with those remarks, but one thing's for sure – they're not going to win any friends in Europe πŸ˜’.

trump's comments about NATO are really concerning πŸ€”... i mean, the guy literally just brushed off all the bloodshed and sacrifice that went into protecting our shared interests in afghanistan. like, come on dude, you can't just downplay the bravery and loyalty of nato troops without understanding what they've been through πŸ’”. it's not about being "dumbfounded" or "disgusted", it's about showing some respect for the people who risked their lives to protect us πŸ™. european governments need to step up and take responsibility for their own defense, but trump's comments aren't exactly inspiring that sense of urgency πŸ˜’.

πŸ˜” hearing about this is really sad... president trump's comments are so hurtful to our brave nato troops πŸ€•... i mean, they're fighting for our safety and freedom, and this is how some leaders show their appreciation? 😑 not okay! πŸ‘Š it's like, we shed blood and tears together, just like lord richard dannatt said, but still we get disrespected? πŸ™„

and what really gets me is the families of the fallen... they're already grieving, and then you have to see this kind of thing from someone who's supposed to be a leader? πŸ’” lucy aldridge's son died on his first day of training in afghanistan... can you even imagine how painful that must be for her? 😭

i think we need to take a step back and realize the sacrifices nato troops are making, not just for us, but for democracy overall 🀝 it's time for european governments to increase their military capability, not because they want to fight a war, but to deter further aggression πŸ’ͺ... this is exactly what roman polko said, and i think we should listen 😊

lol what's next? is he gonna start saying that the US sent 0 troops to Afghanistan lol Trump thinks he can just diss NATO and get away with it πŸ™„ like, dude you were the one who signed off on a $2 trillion war that never ended πŸ‘€ newsflash: your ego doesn't equal military knowledge πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ European leaders are right to be disgusted by his comments, I mean come on, he's basically saying they're not doing enough without acknowledging the actual sacrifices made by troops like William Aldridge's mom described herself as "deeply disgusted" πŸ’” and rightfully so

I'm so sorry to hear you're feeling all those emotions reading about this πŸ€•. It's completely understandable that you'd be upset - who wouldn't want world leaders to show respect for our service members and their families? I can only imagine how frustrating it must feel to see someone in a position of power make comments like that πŸ’”.

It's amazing that people like Alistair Carmichael, Keir Starmer, Roman Polko, Lucy Aldridge, and Lord Richard Dannatt are speaking out against Trump's remarks - they're really showing what it means to stand up for something you believe in 🌟. And I have to say, I'm also a bit worried about the future of NATO... all this talk about European governments needing to do more is making me think about how we can support each other instead of just blaming others 🀝.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in feeling upset about this πŸ’•. We all deserve better from our leaders, and it's okay to express those feelings 🎯. Keep taking care of yourself, and try not to worry too much about what's happening in the world - there are still so many good people out there making a positive impact 🌈

πŸ€” I think this whole thing just shows how out of touch President Trump is when it comes to the realities of war and our allies' willingness to fight for democracy. 🚫 It's like he's trying to rewrite history or something! Newsflash, dude: NATO was formed after 9/11 because we needed a united front against terrorism, not just because you wanted to make a point about spending! πŸ’Έ The fact that Trump's comments have sparked outrage from families of the fallen and even some of our own military leaders is telling. It's clear he's more interested in scoring points than actually supporting our troops or their sacrifices. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And let's be real, if we want to talk about increasing military capability, it's not just about Europe doing more – it's about the US stepping up its own game and showing some backbone on the world stage! πŸ’ͺ

Wow 🀯, I'm really surprised that the President's comments were so hurtful to the families of fallen soldiers. It's not just about politics, it's about respect for people who have lost their lives serving their country. The fact that he made those remarks just because he disagreed with something is just wow... 😳.

🀯 I'm literally shaking my head over this one, fam 😱... President Trump's comments on the US role in Afghanistan are beyond ridiculous πŸ™„. I mean, can't he see that the sacrifice of those NATO troops was made to protect democracy and shared interests? It's not just about America, it's a global effort πŸ’ͺ. And to insult the sacrifices made by the families of those fallen soldiers is just low πŸ”₯... Trump needs to apologize ASAP for his thoughtless remarks πŸ™. I'm all for European countries taking greater responsibility for their own defense, but Trump's approach is just not it πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. He's gotta do better than this πŸ˜”.

man I'm so done with trump's comments about nato troops in afghanistan like who does he think he is making those remarks on social media πŸ™„... i mean i get that we need to take a hard look at our alliances but come on dude be respectful to the fallen and their families πŸ’”... it's not just about the money or the politics it's about the lives lost and the sacrifices made by people who are still fighting for our freedom today πŸ’ͺ

Man, can't believe what Trump just said about NATO troops in Afghanistan πŸ€―πŸ˜’... like, what's next? He's gonna start thinking we don't owe anyone a debt for protecting our democracy? πŸ’Έ It's all about the politics, right? Meanwhile, families of fallen soldiers are left to deal with this kind of hurtful rhetoric πŸ˜”. And yeah, I think it's time for European governments to step up their game and invest in their own defense πŸ€–πŸ’ͺ... can't have us relying on Trump's good vibes alone πŸ˜‰.

I'm totally gutted by what Trump said about NATO troops in Afghanistan πŸ€•. I mean, can't he just show some respect for the guys who are risking their lives over there? The fact that he's questioning the sacrifices they're making is just shocking. And to think that European allies are feeling "dumbfounded" and "disgusted" by his comments... it's a real wake-up call for Trump to get his act together.

I've seen some videos of soldiers returning home after serving in Afghanistan, and it's clear that they're still dealing with the trauma from their experiences. Trump's remarks are just adding fuel to the fire, making it harder for these guys to heal. And what really gets me is that he's not even showing any empathy or understanding for the families who have lost loved ones.

It's time for Trump to take responsibility for his words and apologize to NATO troops and their families. Otherwise, I think we're seeing a bigger problem with leadership and a complete lack of respect for those who are putting it all on the line for our country πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

I'm telling you, this whole thing stinks like rotten fish 🐟... I mean, what's up with President Trump's comments on NATO? It's like he has no idea how it all works or who got hurt in that mess in Afghanistan 🀯. He's just spewing out whatever comes to mind without thinking about the consequences. And now everyone's upset and stuff, but I'm not surprised... this guy's always been a bit of a loose cannon 🎯. The White House is trying to spin it, saying NATO's taking responsibility for its own defense, but that's just a bunch of BS πŸ’”. We all know what really went down in Afghanistan – lives lost, families torn apart, and no clear win πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. It's time someone with some real authority weighed in, not just spewing hot air like Trump 🚽.

I don’t usually comment but I feel like Trump's comments on NATO are really tone deaf πŸ™„. Like, come on, you're basically saying that all the lives lost in Afghanistan didn't mean anything to you? That's not just insulting, it's also kinda arrogant. I mean, I get that he's trying to make a point about NATO spending, but couldn’t he have done that without dissing everyone who served over there? It's just so sad to see a US president making such a big deal out of this and getting all the attention away from the real heroes - the families of the fallen and the service members who are still serving. Anyway, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how NATO responds to these comments πŸ€”

can you believe this dude trump? i mean, i'm not surprised he's saying stuff like that but still... it's just so disrespectful to all the soldiers who lost their lives in afghanistan. five tours in afghanistan is no joke, especially for uk defence minister alistair carmichael. and now lucy aldridge, the mom of a british soldier who died in afghanistan, is speaking out too... it's getting intense. i think trump needs to apologize for his comments ASAP. and it's not just the soldiers who are affected, it's their families too. can't we just have some respect for each other? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜‘

OMG 😱 this guy Trump is so outta touch lol 🀣 I mean what even is he thinking? like NATO has been fighting for years and what does he say? "Hey guys, don't worry, we got your backs"? No respect, fam πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. And the families of the fallen soldiers are just shaking their heads, it's like they're saying "dude, we lost our sons/daughters/brothers/sisters to you" and then he just dismisses it with a comment πŸ™„. And can't believe UK Defence Minister is having to respond to him like an adult πŸ‘€. NATO needs some serious leadership and right now Trump's not cutting the mustard πŸ’ͺ.

OMG, what's going on over there?! 🀯 It sounds like some folks are totally butthurt about what President Trump said about NATO troops in Afghanistan πŸ˜’. Like, I get it, we all want to keep our allies safe and stuff, but can't he just show a bit of respect? πŸ™„ And btw, 457 British service men and women who lost their lives... that's like, a whole lotta sacrifice πŸ’”. Can you imagine being the mom of some poor kid who got killed in action? I'd be shook πŸ˜‚. Trump's comments are so extra πŸ€ͺ, and yeah, European governments need to step up their game if they wanna keep up with the US on defense. It's all about deterrence, fam πŸ’Έ. Let's just hope this whole drama doesn't ruin the alliance 🀞.

Come on, can't we just drop it? I mean, what's the big deal about Trump's comments? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ NATO is all about shared interests, but does that mean they're going to do more because he says so? Please. And another thing, how many times are we supposed to hear about sacrifices made by NATO troops? It's always the same story – someone gets killed, and suddenly everyone's a victim. What about the politicians who send them off to fight in the first place? πŸ™„ Trump might not have gotten it right, but at least he spoke his mind. Now if you ask me, we need more leaders like him, no filter or all πŸ˜‚.

I don't know what's goin' on w/ this guy Trump πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. He says nothin' about respect for those who died in Afghanistan, just that he got a good deal out of it? That's cold πŸ’”. It's like he's tryin' to erase the sacrifices they made, you know? I mean, I've seen some bad stuff online, but this is somethin' else 🀯. And now European allies are callin' him out on it? Fair enough to me πŸ‘Š. Trump should be ashamed of himself for makin' comments like that πŸ˜”.
