Trump to pardon ex-Puerto Rico governor Vázquez in campaign finance case, official says

US President Donald Trump is set to grant pardon to former Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vázquez in connection with a campaign finance case, according to an official at the White House.

Vázquez pleaded guilty last August to accepting a promise of a campaign contribution that was never received. The case also involved a former FBI agent and a Venezuelan banker, who were accused of making promises to support her campaign if she dismissed the governor of Puerto Rico's financial institutions commissioner and appointed a new one of their choosing.

The official said Trump viewed this as a political prosecution, with the investigation into Vázquez starting 10 days after she endorsed him in 2020. The case has drawn criticism from many, who see it as an attempt to silence her for speaking out against corruption on the island.

Vázquez's attorneys had opposed one year behind bars, arguing that prosecutors were violating a guilty plea deal that saw previous charges including bribery and fraud dropped. The pardon plan was confirmed by CBS News first, although the official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Pablo José Hernández, Puerto Rico's representative in Congress and a member of the island's main opposition party, has condemned the planned pardon for Vázquez, saying it will "undermine public integrity" and "shatter faith in justice".

I'm low-key surprised that Trump is granting a pardon to Wanda Vázquez. I mean, I get why some people think she got a raw deal - she was already guilty of accepting a promise of campaign cash that never came through... but still, a year behind bars seems harsh. But now she's getting a free pass? It's like Trump is trying to send a message to anyone who dares to speak out against corruption on the island: just shut up and take the cash. I'm all for people making mistakes and learning from them, but this feels like a slap in the face. 🤔

I mean, who needs accountability when you're a former prez's BFF? 🤷‍♂️ Wanda Vázquez gets a free pass just because Trump thinks the whole thing is a witch hunt? That's rich coming from a guy who's made a career out of being a master of the dark art of self-pardon. 🤣 And now he's trying to silence her for speaking out against corruption? Give me a break. The only thing that's been silenced around here is common sense.

Meh, I gotta say, this whole pardon thing is weird. Like, Wanda Vázquez was already guilty, you know? She accepted that campaign contribution without getting the cash, but still... Trump's gotta go out of his way to give her a free pass just 'cause she didn't like some other dude in charge of Puerto Rico's finances.

It's kinda messed up, because now it looks like he's more interested in protecting his buddies than actually doing what's right. And Pablo José Hernández is totally right, man - this pardon is gonna make people doubt the whole justice system. I mean, what's next? Pardons for everyone who's ever done something questionable just 'cause they said the right thing at the wrong time?

It's like... I'm nostalgic for a time when politicians were more honest with themselves and each other, you know? When they could admit when they messed up without needing some big ol' pardon to wash their hands clean. Anyway, I guess this is just another example of how messed up politics can get 🤷‍♂️

🤔 just saw that Trump is planning to grant a pardon to Wanda Vázquez... like what even is going on? 🙄 I know she pleaded guilty and all, but come on! One year behind bars for speaking out against corruption? That's not exactly the kind of justice we need. 🚫 And now this pardon thingy comes out of nowhere... I mean, was it always a done deal or did Trump just suddenly decide to show mercy? 🤷‍♂️ Either way, it looks bad, fam. We deserve better than politics as usual 💔

omg u wont believe wat just happend!!! 🤯 so like trump is all set to grant pardon 2 Wanda Vázquez... i mean whats up wit dat??!! she pleaded guilty 4 campaign finance case last aug & was supposed 2 get 1 year in jail but trump is all like "nahhh" lol @ prosecutors thinkin they can silence her 4 speaking out against corruption on the island 🙄 its like, cant u just let ppl do ther jobs without havin to worry bout bein persecuted??!! vázquez's lawyers were all "hey guys u can't sentence her 2 more than the deal we made" but trump is like "forget dat" & now hes goin 2 wipe out all this hard work... 🤷‍♀️ what a travesty!!!

omg can't believe trump is doing this 🤯! i mean wanda vazquez was involved in some shady stuff but pardon her now? feels like there's more to this story than meets the eye 🤑. what really went down between her and those guys from the fbi & venezuela bank? shouldn't she have gotten a fair trial instead of getting a free pass? also, pablo hernandez is totally right about public integrity... if trump's just gonna throw pardons around like confetti, it undermines everything 😒. ugh can we get some real justice here 🤕

omg wanda vazquez is gonna get off scott free 🤯 i mean dont get me wrong shes had some serious issues but come on 1 year in jail over campaign finance? thats like, super light punishment imo. ive been following this whole thing and im all about transparency in gov but at the same time its kinda messed up that trump is basically saying its a political prosecution & not even close to being impartial 🤷‍♀️ pablo hernandez has every right to be upset tho - corruption is real deal stuff 🚫

I'm skeptical about this pardon thingy. I mean, 10 days after she endorsed Trump? That's like a ticking time bomb for corruption right there! 🚨 If the investigation started that close to her endorsing him, it sounds like a setup to me. And now Trump is just going to swoop in and grant a pardon? It smells like a favor for his buddy Wanda Vázquez.

I don't buy all this talk about "political prosecution" from the White House. I need some solid sources on that one before I start believing it. What's really going on here? Is Trump just trying to silence someone who was speaking out against corruption? That's not how pardons work, and if he's doing it for political reasons, it's a bad look.

I'm also weirded out by the fact that this pardon plan was only confirmed by CBS News first. I don't see any transparency here, which is exactly what we need to know more about. Transparency would be nice, especially when it comes to pardons and potential corruption.

this is so shady 🤔. like wanda vazquez was already guilty and she gets a pardon just because trump thinks its a political prosecution? that's not justice, that's just a slap on the wrist 😒. i mean, whats next? giving pardons to everyone who speaks out against corruption? it sounds like trump is just trying to silence critics and cover up his own mistakes 🙄. pablo jose hernandez is right, this pardon will undermine public integrity and shatter faith in justice 🤕. we need real accountability, not just a quick fix to make trump happy 👎

The US President thinks he's above the law, literally. Like, who needs accountability when you're the one with the pen? 🖊️ It's all about politics as usual, folks. A former governor gets a slap on the wrist for allegedly trying to buy influence, and suddenly it's a political prosecution? Yeah, right. And now she's getting a pardon because Trump thinks she spoke out against corruption? That's rich, coming from a guy who's made a career out of being corrupt himself. Anyway, I guess this is what happens when you think the system is rigged against you... but really, it's just rigging yourself. 😒
