Trump’s DOJ eyes Dearborn’s Muslims, not the racist insurrectionist who terrorized them - Detroit Metro Times

A top Trump administration official has suggested that the US Department of Justice may investigate individuals who responded to a violent far-right provocateur in Dearborn, Michigan. The individual in question is Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, who encouraged Jake Lang, a convicted rioter and avowed racist, to reach out with information needed to start an investigation.

Lang had recently posted a nine-minute video of himself yelling racial slurs and taunting Muslims in Dearborn. The video was selectively edited to portray counter-protesters as violent and aggressive, but it did not include footage of Lang's own harassment and intimidation tactics. Despite this, Dhillon replied to one of Lang's tweets by suggesting that the DOJ might investigate those who responded physically to his provocations.

This move has sparked outrage among many who see it as a clear example of the Trump administration's double standard on issues related to race and extremism. The DOJ has historically been more aggressive in pursuing investigations into alleged crimes committed by Black and brown people, while showing less enthusiasm for pursuing similar cases involving white supremacists.

Lang is no stranger to controversy. He was one of nearly 1,600 people granted clemency by the Trump administration on January 20th, including many rioters convicted of assaulting or obstructing police during the January 6th attack on the US Capitol. Despite his own history of violence and racism, Dhillon has shown a willingness to entertain Lang's claims and pursue investigations that target specific communities.

This move is part of a broader pattern of targeting marginalized communities for surveillance and harassment by the Trump administration. By pursuing investigations into the responses of Muslims and allies in Dearborn, the DOJ is sending a chilling message that anyone who speaks out against white supremacist provocateurs will be subject to scrutiny and potential persecution.

The decision also has significant implications for the future of civil rights enforcement in the United States. If the DOJ begins to target communities targeted by white extremists, it sets a dangerous precedent that could have far-reaching consequences for the nation's most vulnerable populations.

In Dearborn, residents from all backgrounds come together to form a vibrant and inclusive community. About half of the city's population is not Muslim, and Christians, non-religious people, and members of other faiths are also an integral part of the community. The idea that Muslims alone would be subject to investigation based on Lang's provocations would only serve to further exacerbate existing tensions.

In conclusion, Harmeet Dhillon's suggestion that the DOJ may investigate individuals who responded physically to Jake Lang's provocations is a concerning development that highlights the administration's ongoing pattern of double standards and hypocrisies.

I'm really disappointed in this move by the DOJ 🤕. It feels like they're trying to silence people who are just trying to stand up against hate speech and racism 😡. I mean, shouldn't we be protecting people from being harassed and intimidated, not investigating them for doing what's right? 💔 The fact that Lang is a convicted rioter and racist makes it even more ridiculous that the DOJ is considering an investigation into the counter-protesters 🙄. It's like they're saying that if you want to speak out against white supremacy, you might get investigated for being a "threat" 👮‍♂️. This is exactly what we need less of in this country - more fear and intimidation, not less 💔.

🤔 This is getting crazy... I think it's outrageous that a Trump official is trying to justify investigating people for standing up to some far-right provocateur in Dearborn just because they're Muslim 🤷‍♂️. Like, what's next? Investigating everyone who spoke out against those white supremacists? 😱 It seems like the DOJ is only targeting certain communities and it's not fair 🙅‍♂️.

I'm also worried about this setting a precedent for civil rights enforcement in the US. If they start singling out specific groups, it could lead to a lot of fear and mistrust among already vulnerable populations 💔. We need some serious accountability from our law enforcement agencies and less of these kinds of targeted investigations 🚫.

What do you guys think? Should we be worried about this kind of thing happening in the US? 🤝

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one 🤯... it just seems like another example of how the US government is playing both sides when it comes to extremist groups. I mean, if a white supremacist like Lang is allowed to promote hate speech and then gets protected by someone in the DOJ, that's just not right 😒. And now they're saying people who stood up for themselves against him might be next? That's a chilling thought, man... we need to make sure our law enforcement agencies are serving everyone equally, regardless of their background or faith 🤝.

omg this is so messed up 🤯 dhillon is literally enabling lang's behavior and now he's gonna target muslims and others who stood up for themselves. it's like they're trying to create a climate of fear and intimidation. i'm all for holding people accountable, but not when it comes at the expense of marginalized communities.

and what's with the DOJ being so selective about who they investigate? isn't it true that they've been sniffing around antifa members and left-wing activists too? seems like there's a double standard going on here.

the implications for civil rights enforcement are huge 🚨. if they start targeting specific communities, it sets a bad precedent and will only serve to further divide us. i hope people speak out against this and demand more accountability from our leaders.

anyway, just my two cents...

I'm really worried about this one 🤕... I mean, think about it - what would happen if people like you and me decided to respond physically to someone yelling at us on the street? We'd be in a whole world of trouble! But when it's a white supremacist provocateur, suddenly we're the bad guys? That's not how it works, folks. We gotta call out hate wherever we see it, even if it means standing up against powerful people.

This is about more than just politics - it's about protecting our communities and our values 🌎. If we start to treat each other like suspects based on the color of their skin or what they believe, that's when we lose ourselves as a society. We need to stand together against hate, not tear each other apart because of fear or bias.

It's time for us all to take a step back and think about why we're doing what we're doing 🤔. Are we really fighting for justice, or are we just trying to silence others? Let's choose love over anger, empathy over exclusion, and understanding over suspicion. We can do better than this 💕

This is so weird lol 🤯 why is the Trump admin trying to protect far-right guys who are super racist and violent? shouldn't they be held accountable for their actions? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, if we're talking about investigating people who responded physically to someone's provocations, it should be about making sure everyone's safe and not just whitewashing the issue. 😒

🤔 This whole thing just got really weird. I mean, Harmeet Dhillon is supposed to be protecting people's rights, but instead he's encouraging investigations into people who are just standing up for themselves against some racist provocateur. It feels like the Trump administration is trying to send a message that only certain groups can speak out without getting attacked. 🚨 Newsflash: we're all equal under the law here, folks! If you've got evidence of someone breaking the law, then go after them, no matter who they are. But this selective targeting of Muslims and their allies in Dearborn is just not right. 😒
