The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent who killed Renee Good, a 23-year-old Somali immigrant, during an immigration raid in Minnesota was falsely identified by the internet community using artificial intelligence.
In November of last year, Renee Good died after being shot by ICE officer Brian Isom. The incident sparked outrage across the US as it was reported that ICE had used immigrants for forced labor. Amidst this turmoil, a viral social media campaign began to 'unmask' Officer Isom using facial recognition technology and AI algorithms.
However, this resulted in internet users mistakenly identifying two unrelated individuals with the same name - Renee Good and Brian Good, the 39-year-old son of an Arizona mayor. This misidentification triggered threats and hate speech towards both men.
