Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni declared winner of presidential election

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has emerged victorious after a contentious presidential election campaign marked by an opposition crackdown and internet blackout. The 81-year-old leader secured 71.65% of the vote, defeating his main challenger, Bobi Wine, who garnered 24.72% of the vote.

The United Nations had previously described the election as marred by "widespread repression and intimidation", including a police crackdown on opposition rallies. Additionally, a nationwide internet shutdown took place, drawing international criticism for disrupting effective observation of the polls.

Bobi Wine, the opposition leader, had claimed on social media that ballot stuffing was taking place, while his party's spokesman described the results as "a sham". However, many Ugandans still praise Museveni as the leader who ended Uganda's post-independence chaos and oversaw rapid economic growth.

Despite widespread reports of intimidation, arrests, and abductions targeting opposition figures, election observers noted that there was no evidence of ballot stuffing. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, representing African Union and regional bodies, stated that the internet shutdown "increased suspicion" but overall polling day was peaceful.

In a related incident, at least 10 people were reportedly killed by police in an attack on a local opposition lawmaker's home in Butambala, with authorities citing machete-wielding opposition supporters as the perpetrators. Museveni's victory was widely expected, given his total control over the state and security apparatus, which has allowed him to change the constitution twice to remove age and term limits.

Museveni's governing party holds a commanding lead in parliamentary seats, according to provisional results, with ballots still being counted. The outcome of this election may yet be subject to controversy as some opposition supporters remain skeptical about the legitimacy of Museveni's victory.

🤔 I'm not surprised by Museveni's win, tbh. He's been in power for ages and has a pretty tight grip on things. The internet blackout was a major red flag, but I guess it didn't seem to faze too many people. It's still weird how some Ugandans are so supportive of him despite all the controversy. I mean, 71.65% is crazy! 🤯 What really got me though is that Bobi Wine and his party were super vocal about ballot stuffing, but it seems like there was no evidence to back it up...or maybe they just didn't want to rock the boat? 😏 The whole thing feels a bit fishy to me.

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni is so old, he must have voted for himself before voting day 🤣! But seriously, 71.65% is a huge margin, it's like I'm eating all the chips in the bag – no sharing 😂. The internet shutdown was a total bummer, I mean who needs social media to complain about the election results? 📵 But in all seriousness, it's good that most Ugandans still support Museveni, maybe they're just nostalgic for the 'good old days' when he first took office – you know, like that one aunt at the family reunion 😂. The opposition is still trying to figure out what went wrong, but I think we can all agree that a peaceful polling day is still a win-win in my book 🎉!

🤔 I'm kinda surprised Museveni came out on top, I mean, the internet shutdown was pretty shady and those reports of police brutality against opposition figures are still a major concern 😟. Bobi Wine put up a good fight, though - 24.72% is no joke 🙌. On one hand, you gotta give credit to Museveni for the economic growth & stability he's brought Uganda, but on the other hand, it feels like he's got some serious strings attached given his control over security and the state 🤝. Can't help but wonder what other tricks are up his sleeve 💥. Anyway, it's a complex situation, and I'm sure there will be a lot of debate about this election for a while 😊.

I'm low-key impressed by Museveni's longevity lol 🤣 81 and still in power? that's some impressive leadership skills, right? but for real though, those election results are sketchy as hell... like, what even is the point of having opposition if they can't get their guy to win without any cheating or manipulation? 🤑 and what about all those internet shutdowns and police crackdowns? that's some serious voter suppression going on. my take is that Museveni might be able to pull off this victory, but it's gonna come at a cost to his reputation and possibly even the stability of the country in the long run 🤔.

Ugh, what a shock 🤦‍♂️... no, seriously, it's like Uganda was always gonna go with the old guard. I mean, 71%+ for Museveni is not exactly a landslide 😴. It's just another example of how politics can be so... predictable. And sorry, Bobi Wine, but your "ballot stuffing" claims didn't quite fly 🚫.

I guess it's good that the AU guy came to Uganda's rescue and said the polls were peaceful 🙏. But let's not forget about all those opposition figures who got intimidated or worse. It's like, yeah, we get it, Museveni has been in power for a long time... but does he really need to hold onto it so tightly? Griping aside though, it'll be interesting to see how the rest of the results shake out and if anyone gets any real change 🤔

I'm not surprised that Museveni won... 🤔 I mean, he's been in power for like, forever! He's got a tight grip on the country and it's hard for anyone to challenge him. The internet blackout was pretty harsh though... 👎 can't they just let people express their opinions online? And those 10 people killed by police were totally innocent, I don't see how opposition supporters could've used machetes... 😡 still, this is a really concerning election and the international community should be paying closer attention. The fact that they had to intervene at all was pretty wild... 🤯

Just heard about the election results in Uganda 🤯! I'm really worried about what happened, especially the police crackdown on opposition rallies and internet shutdown 😕. It sounds like things got pretty intense, with people getting arrested or even killed over their support for Bobi Wine.

I've been following the news and it's hard to ignore the reports of intimidation and repression. But at the same time, I also know that Museveni has been a leader who's brought stability and economic growth to Uganda after independence 🌟. It's just really frustrating when you see democracy being compromised in these ways.

I'm curious to see how things play out now that Museveni has won re-election 🤔. Will the opposition be able to contest the results or will it be business as usual under his leadership? Only time will tell 🕰️.

🤕 honestly i dont think the election was super fair 🙅‍♂️ considering the internet shutdown and all the arrests on opposition figures 🚫 it sounds like museveni had a lot of control over the outcome 🤝 but at the same time, he did bring stability to uganda after independence and the economy has grown 📈 so im not sure how people are feeling about this whole thing 🤔 some ppl might be worried about the opposition's claims of ballot stuffing though 🗳️ we should def keep an eye on how the parliament seats play out too ⚖️

I'm not sure what's more concerning here - the opposition crackdown or the fact that Bobi Wine is already questioning the validity of the election 🤔. I mean, 71.65% is a pretty wide margin, but if there were widespread repression and intimidation, it'd be hard to trust the outcome. And what about all those arrests and abductions targeting opposition figures? It feels like Museveni's got a stranglehold on the country 🤕. At least 10 people lost their lives in that attack tho... really brutal 💔.

🤔 I'm not surprised by Museveni's win, but I am kinda underwhelmed 🙃. He's been in power for ages, and it's clear he's got a solid grip on the country. But at what cost? The opposition crackdown and internet blackout are pretty concerning, especially when you consider how many international eyes were on this election 🌎. I mean, can we really trust the numbers with the shutdown in place? 🤔 And those 10 people killed in Butambala... that's just a whole other level of disturbing 😱.

It's also weird to me that so many Ugandans are praising Museveni despite his authoritarian ways 🙄. I guess when you're not exactly living on the edge, you don't have to worry about the same things we do in our country 🌟. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how long this election results hold up and whether there's any real scrutiny of Museveni's win 👀.

Ugh, I'm literally shaking my head over here... 😩 like how did it even come to this? 71% is just too much for me, you know? 🤯 it feels like Uganda is being held hostage by Museveni and his crew. And don't even get me started on the internet shutdown - can you imagine not being able to vote because of a power play? 🙄 that's some messed up stuff right there.

I mean, I get it, Museveni has done some good things for Uganda, but does he have to win like this? 💔 it feels so... unsportsmanlike. And what about Bobi Wine and his team - they were just trying to participate in the democratic process, only to be met with all this resistance. It's just not right.

And then there's that whole thing with the police beating up opposition supporters at their home... 🤕 how do you even deal with that kind of violence? I just can't wrap my head around it. It feels like Museveni is trying to silence anyone who dares to challenge him, and that's just not okay.

OMG, what a wild ride 😱! I'm low-key surprised that Bobi Wine didn't make it to 50%+1 tho... 🤔 I mean, Museveni's got some major connections, but still... 🙃 The internet blackout is just whack, btw. Can't even get a stable Wi-Fi connection in Africa 😒. On the other hand, I guess his economic growth and stability are kinda winning points? 💸👍

Oh my goodness, I'm so concerned about what happened in Uganda 😕. As a parent, it makes me want to scream how unfair and intimidating it is for those young people who wanted to exercise their right to vote 💔. The internet shutdown was like taking away all the tools they had to express themselves and hold their leaders accountable 📵. It's not just about the election results, but about the freedom of speech and the way we treat each other in a democracy ❤️.

I keep thinking about how my kids would react if they saw their government treating its own citizens like this 😳. I hope that one day, Uganda will learn to balance stability with freedom and accountability 🤞. And what's even more worrying is that there are people still being killed for speaking out against the government 💀. It's just heartbreaking 🤕.

🤔 I'm not surprised that Yoweri Museveni won, tbh. He's been in power for ages and has a pretty tight grip on things. It's hard to challenge someone who has so much control over the system. 🤷‍♂️ But at the same time, it's worrying that there were reports of intimidation and arrests targeting opposition figures. That kind of thing can really chill people from speaking out or participating in politics. 😬 And what's up with this internet shutdown? It feels like a major way to stifle dissent and keep people in the dark about what's going on. 📊 I'm not sure how much credibility the election results have, especially given all the controversy surrounding it. Maybe we'll see some challenges to Museveni's victory down the line? 🤞

🤔 This whole thing is just super suspicious. I mean, 71.65% of the vote? That's crazy! And with all those reports of intimidation and arrests going on, it feels like there was definitely some voter suppression going on. 🚫 But at the same time, no evidence of ballot stuffing, huh? That does make you wonder if everything was just a big setup.

And what's up with that internet shutdown, anyway? I get why they'd try to limit access to info, but still... it feels like they were trying to cover something. 📊 And then that incident in Butambala... 10 people dead? That's just outrageous! Police saying it was opposition supporters wielding machetes? Um, no thanks. 🔫

I'm all for Museveni having done some good stuff, but this whole thing feels super fishy. I wish there were more international observers present to keep things in check. Maybe next time, Uganda can have a real election without all the drama and bloodshed 😬

🤔 So I'm not surprised Museveni won but like, how can we trust the vote if the internet is down? 📊 A diagram would show you - imagine a circle with 100% representing Ugandan voters and a big chunk missing because of the shutdown. That's kinda what happened here... 💻

I also feel for Bobi Wine, he had some legit concerns but I guess the opposition wasn't well-prepared to counter Museveni's propaganda machine 📺 The fact that many Ugandans still love Museveni is sad - like, don't get me wrong, he did bring stability after independence, but at what cost? 🤕

The African Union guy said the polling day was peaceful, but a peaceful election doesn't necessarily mean it's fair... 🤔 I'm not buying all the claims of ballot stuffing just yet. I need to see more evidence before I can say it wasn't just a lot of noise in the opposition camp 🗣️

Ugh, can't even trust the numbers on this site anymore... 🤯 It's like they're just regurgitating whatever the gov't fed them. 71.65% is suspiciously high for a "free election". I mean, come on, 24.72% for Bobi Wine? That's not even close to realistic considering how much opposition he was silenced beforehand. 🤔 And don't even get me started on the internet blackout - it's like they wanted to rig the whole thing. 🚫 This reminds me of all the other times the gov't has "accidentally" shut down online platforms when things got too hot for them... 👀
