Video: Securing Somalia’s capital against al-Shabab threat

I'm not sure if I'd say that all this progress is a 'done deal' just yet... I mean, having security checkpoints everywhere can feel kinda suffocating? My kid was walking with friends on Saturday and they said it felt like there were so many soldiers around, it made them feel uncomfortable 🤔. But at the same time, you gotta admit that less gunfire and bombings is a good thing 😊. It's just hard to know what's 'normal' anymore in a city that used to be so war-torn. Do you think we'll ever get back to feeling safe on the streets without all this added security? 🤷‍♀️

I'm so relieved to hear that Mogadishu's streets are getting safer! As a parent, I can only imagine how scary it must have been for families to navigate the city with kids. Now, with these new security measures in place, it's like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders 🙏. The fact that checkpoints and patrols are being implemented shows that the authorities are taking the threat from al-Shabab seriously, which is really admirable.

But I do worry about the root causes of extremism, you know? Poverty and lack of education can be such powerful drivers of radicalization... as a parent, it's hard not to wonder if we're doing enough to address those underlying issues. Job creation programs and poverty reduction efforts are definitely steps in the right direction 🤞. And education campaigns that promote social cohesion are so important for building trust between security forces and local communities.

It's great to see international partners supporting Mogadishu's efforts, but at the end of the day, it's the Somali government and local leaders who need to work together to build a safer, more stable future for their people. Fingers crossed that these initiatives will pay off and al-Shabab's threat will be eradicated! 🤞

omg what a huge improvement in mogadishu 😲! i've been following this story for ages and to see all these checkpoints popping up everywhere is amazing 🚨. i'm not gonna lie tho, it's still scary to walk down the street sometimes 🤯. but overall, it's defo looking up for the city right now 💪.

i think its great that they're focusing on job creation programs and poverty reduction efforts 📈. it makes sense that if people have a steady income and are taken care of financially, they're less likely to get sucked into extremism 😔. education is also super important - kids who grow up without knowledge or exposure can be easily manipulated by extremist groups 🤦‍♂️.

anyway, its heartening to see somalia making progress after all these years 💕. lets hope it keeps going and the city stays safe 🙏

I mean Mogadishu's streets used to be like a real-life video game where you had one life and that was it! Now they're so safe, even a tourist can walk around without worrying about being shot (just kidding 😂). Seriously though, it's great to see them implementing security measures. I bet the checkpoint guy is just sitting there thinking "I'm not just enforcing traffic laws anymore, I'm like a real-life superhero" 🦸‍♂️🚔. And on a more serious note, it's awesome that they're working with local authorities and international partners to create jobs and reduce poverty. Maybe one day Mogadishu will be the next Dubai and everyone can come for the shopping malls and the nice beaches... just don't expect me to join you there anytime soon I'll stick to my beach body on the couch 😴🏖️.
