Winter Olympics 2026: GB skeleton team appeal after new helmet ruled out

Britain's skeleton team are appealing to the Court of Arbitration for sport (Cas) after being told their new helmets don't meet requirements due to their shape. The British Bobsleigh and Skeleton Association (BBSA) said the helmet was designed with safety in mind, but the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) has ruled that it doesn't comply.

The team won the World Cup gold last season with Matt Weston taking overall title and Marcus Wyatt finishing second. However, the team switched to a new design for this season, which is set to start later this year. The IBSF rules state that helmets must not have any aerodynamic elements attached.

Despite being told they cannot use their helmets in competition, the British team has appealed to Cas, with the decision expected on Friday. Team GB's skeleton athletes will be racing in Italy from February 12-22 and are hoping to perform well despite the helmet issue.

Team GB is confident that its athletes can still win medals using either helmet, as they have proven themselves in training sessions last week. The helmets underwent checks before being deemed non-compliant with IBSF rules.

πŸ€” so i feel bad for the british bobsleigh team... their new helmets are meant to be safer and all but the ibsf is like super strict about it... i mean, you gotta follow the rules or what? πŸ™ they're still gonna do great in competition tho, team gb's got talented athletes and they've already shown they can win with those old helmets lol. i just hope cas makes a fair decision for them this friday πŸ‘€

I'm not sure why Team GB's new helmets are such a big deal πŸ€”. The IBSF rules say no aerodynamic elements, but it seems like they're just trying to make them more comfortable for the athletes or something πŸ’ͺ. I mean, helmets have been around forever and nobody ever had an issue with them before. It's not like they're going to let one little non-compliance ruin their whole season πŸ™„.

And what's with all the fuss about shape? Are helmets really that sensitive? I don't get it πŸ˜’. They've won medals with these same helmets last year and now they're suddenly not allowed? Come on! πŸ‘€

OMG, like seriously?! 🀯 Their new helmets don't even meet the requirements because of their shape? That's like, super weird. I mean, I guess safety is important and all that, but come on! Can't they just tweak the design a bit to make it comply? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm kinda rooting for Team GB here though... πŸ˜‚ They were on fire last season and won the World Cup gold, so I think they'll still do well. And let's be real, their athletes have already proven themselves in training sessions, so I trust them to figure out a way to win medals with or without the new helmets 🎯.

I'm loving this drama though! It's like, what even is the point of rules if you can't make exceptions? πŸ€” But hey, we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out... Fingers crossed for Team GB, tho πŸ‘

ugh, this just got so frustrating for Team GB 😩. I mean, you'd think the IBSF would be more understanding, especially since their athletes are about to hit speeds of over 90mph on ice! 🀯 But nope, they're being super strict about the helmet rules and it's like, come on! πŸ’β€β™€οΈ The new design was meant for safety, not some arbitrary rule that just doesn't make sense. And now they're appealing to Cas? It feels like a waste of time if you ask me πŸ•°οΈ. But hey, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out... fingers crossed for Team GB! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ™ think its pretty frustrating for team britain if they cant use their new helmets...i mean, didnt they test them and make sure they were safe? πŸ€” also, whats the point of having a team that can win world cups if you just gotta change everything every season? πŸ€‘ the ibsf rules arent exactly rocket science, its just helmet design πŸ˜‚...the british bobsleigh and skeleton association is trying to appeal, fingers crossed for them! 🀞 maybe cas will see sense and let them compete with their helmets πŸ’‘ or maybe not...only time will tell ⏰

Ugh, this is so frustrating!!! 🀯 They went and got new helmets for their bobsleigh team and now they're saying they don't meet requirements because of the shape?!? Like what even is wrong with that design?! πŸ˜’ The Brits are all confident that their athletes can still win medals but I'm like, what's the point?! πŸ€” They've already lost their lead in the World Cup and now this?!? It's just not fair. And why do these helmets have to be so perfect anyway?! Can't they just have a little aerodynamic flair?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ The ITA rules are just so strict, I swear. And what about all that money they've spent on these new helmets?! All for nothing now because of some stupid rule?! 😑 It's like the whole thing is just one big headache...

πŸ€” I mean, come on... what's the big deal about a slight aerodynamic element? It's just a tiny bit of extra air flow around the helmet? πŸ˜‚ I'm sure it's not gonna make a huge difference in terms of safety or performance. And can we talk about how much time and money is being wasted on all these regulations? 🀯 It seems like they're more worried about following rules than actually ensuring the athletes are safe.

And let's be real, who needs a 'standard' helmet design that doesn't even reflect their team's style or personality? πŸ’β€β™€οΈ I think it's awesome that Team GB is standing up for themselves and appealing to CAS. Maybe they can set an example for other teams to follow... πŸ‘ŠπŸΌ

Ugh, great, just what I needed to make my day complete - more bobsleigh drama πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. So the Brits got their new helmets and they're like "yeah, no problem" but then the IBSF's all "nope, those suckers don't meet our safety standards" πŸ˜’. I mean, I get it, helmets are important, but come on, can't you just chill for one second? πŸ™„

And now they're appealing to CAS, because why not, right? It's not like the Brits haven't been warned or anything. It's like trying to pass off a dodgy souvenirs from a street vendor and then acting all outraged when it gets caught 🎟️.

I guess only time will tell if Team GB can still pull off some medals despite their fancy-schmancy helmet drama. Fingers crossed, not that I'm invested in bobsleigh or anything πŸ˜‚. But hey, at least the Brits are having fun with it - who needs actual safety standards when you've got attitude and determination? πŸ’ͺ

OMG, what's going on here? 🀯 So the British bobsleigh team switches to a new helmet design and suddenly it's not good enough for the IBSF? Like, come on! πŸ˜’ They even say their own helmets were designed with safety in mind... that's weird. It feels like there's some sort of conspiracy going on here.

I get that safety is super important, but can't we just have a few more options instead of no aerodynamic elements attached? πŸ€” It's kinda cool to see the athletes pushing boundaries and trying new things. They're basically saying "screw it" with their current helmet and might as well just go for broke.

I mean, they've already won the World Cup gold last season without any issues... I think Team GB is gonna be fine. πŸ’ͺ They'll just have to tweak a few things before the next competition. Let's hope the CAS makes sense of this one soon! 🀞

πŸ€” You know how we always talk about innovation and pushing boundaries? Well, this is a perfect example of that! πŸš€ But it's also making me think about the importance of meeting standards and regulations in our pursuit of excellence. Like, if safety wasn't a top priority when designing those helmets, did the BBSA really consider the bigger picture?

I'm curious to see how Cas will rule on this appeal. Will their new helmets be deemed safe enough for competition? 🀝 It's like we're all learning together - as athletes and as individuals - that sometimes you gotta follow the rules to reach your goals. πŸ’ͺ

idk about this one πŸ€”... think it's fishy how the British team just magically switched to a new design without getting a heads up from the IBSF first? seems like they were trying to get an edge or something πŸ€‘ and now they're playing dumb when Cas tells them their helmets don't meet requirements. have you seen that video of Matt Weston taking the World Cup gold last season? that helmet was definitely not aerodynamic... i'm gonna keep an eye on this one, see how it all plays out πŸ‘€

I'm telling you, it's just not fair! 😩 They've been using those helmets for ages and now all of a sudden they're saying they don't meet the requirements? It's like trying to fix a car while it's still running, you know? πŸš— The team has proven in training sessions that those helmets are safe and they can compete with the best. I'm not sure why Cas needs to get involved at all. πŸ’Έ It's just another way for them to delay the start of the season. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ But hey, Team GB is still gonna give it their all and hopefully they can bring back some gold for Britain! πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

I think it's pretty weird that the team is appealing to CAS when they already know their new helmets don't meet requirements πŸ€”. I mean, you'd think they'd want to change them before competing, right? But, I guess it shows how invested they are in winning those medals πŸ’ͺ. Still, can't help but wonder if this whole thing is just a PR stunt πŸ˜’. What's the real reason for the appeal? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh, another ridiculous rule in bobsleigh... πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, who designs a helmet that's not aerodynamic?! It's like they're trying to sabotage the team on purpose. And now they're appealing to Cas, of all places? Like, can't they just get it sorted out with the IBSF already? It's not exactly rocket science... πŸš€ This is just going to give me a headache trying to follow the whole situation. Can we just have some common sense in these sports organizations for once?! 😩

Ugh, what's up with these new helmet regulations? πŸ€” I mean, I get it, safety first and all that, but can't they just make the helmets look a bit more stylish? πŸ˜‚ The British bobsleigh team is literally appealing to CAS because their helmets are too aerodynamic. Like, what's next? Are we gonna have to wear bubblegum pink jumpsuits in competition now? πŸš«πŸ’¨ It's all a bit of a drag, you know?

And can we talk about how ridiculous it is that they went from winning the World Cup gold last season to having their new helmets deemed non-compliant just this year? Like, what changed? Was it something in the design process or did someone just decide they wanted to make the team look cooler? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Still, I gotta give them points for being confident. The British skeleton athletes have been doing great in training sessions and are still hoping to win medals despite the helmet issue. That's what matters, right? βš”οΈ But, man, these new regulations just feel like a bit of an overkill... 😐

omg, cant believe the british bobsleigh team is gettin' in trouble like this!!! 🀯 i mean, they just won the world cup gold last season and now they're gettin' docked because of a helmet? it's not fair at all! 😑 those helmets were designed with safety in mind, so why can't they be allowed to use 'em?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ i've been followin' team GB on social media and they always seem so positive and determined... like, what's gonna happen now? will they even get to compete? πŸ’” it's such a bummer for the athletes who have worked so hard. fingers crossed cas sees sense and lets 'em back in 🀞
